That's what I have as well. Love the phone! It's been very reliable and durable. I may get my hands on a Windows 7 phone for a bit just to try it out for a bit before I switch back to another Android.

In part do to the fact of it's great contrast ratio. I've held the Super AMOLED screen from my phone next to the Moto Droid, HTC Desire, HTC EVO and they aren't anywhere close. TFT Display (on most Android phones) = ~60,000 colors. Super AMOLED display (Galaxy S phones) = ~16,000,000 colors. :)

What is wrong with it? Generally when I hear this (about any smartphone) it is user error as opposed to the phone itself.

ie. Never pulls the battery, doesn't manage apps, downloads malicious apps, fills their phone up with an outstanding amount of texts, etc, etc, etc.

that article was about a 1 piece, touch-screen phone. i prefer something like the droid or the epic 4g; with a keyboard.

Ummm, it has a keyboard, and a qwerty keyboard at that. Just because you don't like virtual keyboards doesn't mean there isn't a keyboard.

no, a "virtual" keyboard is not a keyboard. think about this for a minute. why do laptops still ship with PHYSICAL KEYBOARDS, rather than a "touchscreen" for a virtual keyboard?

yes. it's because virtual keyboards suck.

To each their own. I really don't mind either, but prefer a virtual keyboard. Pro tip going forward, you should say that you prefer one thing over the other, and not simply say the other does not exist. :)

Well, I can't really tell if you are upset at my comment or not. Either way, I was going to go through some trouble-shooting techniques if you wanted. If you have a background in IT you probably know all the malicious apps in a market of over 100,000 though. :p

no, it doesn't exist. hence the term "virtual". it's NOT a keyboard. it's a program which allows the user to mimic the ability to use an actual keyboard while providing none of the benefits of the device it is supposedly "supplanting".

it's bad enough that smartphone resolutions are going up while laptop resolutions are GOING DOWN. as if that wasn't enough of a WTF moment in itself. i'll be damned if i'm paying for a smartphone that doesn't have a proper keyboard.

fixed.

i'm right. the tech industy is batshit crazy, but i'm still right. i can buy an IBM from 2006 with a higher resolution than any current offerings on the market. the push for "virtual keyboards only" is one more way that the industry is trying to push the consumer into the pigeon-holes it decides it wants to market to; rather than actually reacting to consumer demand.

tell you what though, the day professional FPS gamers use "virtual" keyboards for competition...i'll switch. until then, it's just a load of glorified horse-shit. enjoy your virtual phone. i choose not to pay for glorified cow dung (which is incidentally, why i've never bought one apple product IN MY ENTIRE LIFE).

How dare manufacturers and the "tech industry" for naming products they've made.

Relating virtual keyboards to a completely arbitrary scenario. We're talking phone features here, not gaming computers. Try and keep up. However, if you would like to bring up competition about the matter at hand (virtual keyboards ;)) they have won in speed competitions for some time now over physical keyboards. :) And again, whatever people have, is great. Everyone should get what they like, not what others prefer. As said before, I don't mind either. I can just text quicker on a virtual than a physical. That, and the phones tend to be slimmer and easier to put in my pocket. What you prefer is not what I am after here. :)

enjoy your virtual phone. i choose not to pay for glorified cow dung

Perfect way to wrap it up. An insult. Always a strong way to close.

i knew i wasn't the only one on here who hated virtual keyboards. the legions of smartphone reviews i've ran across have quite a few "haters" too.

p.s.

telling me that a virtual keyboard is faster than a qwerty keyboard is pointless. an abacus was demonstrated to be faster than a calculator back during wwii. you don't see me carrying an abacus or a slide-rule around, do you?

p.p.s.

there is NOTHING about this phone which makes it a "must have" or any previous smartphone; especially due to the lack of a qwerty keyboard option. going "gaga" over it is about as silly as being an i-tard, mollafolla.

You're sheer hypocrisy makes me feel a sense of vertigo. This just sounds like a Mikes2nd post. This makes me sound like an "i-tard" (bringing up one phone on one occasion) but incessant rants about ATX's is being an "enthusiast". Doesn't matter, though. I've posted my thoughts and general news, you've posted your posts, I'll let the crowd read everything and go from there. :)

I'm still rocking a Droid. Gonna wait until the end of the year or more to get a new phone. Yeah, even OC'd my phone can lag sometimes, but it's still a great phone, with a decent keyboard. I'd love this phone with a better keyboard, and more power like the Droid 2... buttt... It can't have a stupid UI plastered on it like the Droid 2 or any HTC phone. Also, make it open and flashable while you're at it. I'm not a big ROM nerd, but I want the option available to me.

Why are some of you not rooted running custom Roms and kernals. Dont wait around for an update. I have the Captivate and absolutly love it, running Froyo Darkys 9.2 extreme Rom with speedmod kernal. Phone is fast as hell now. Also launcher pro so I can customize the look.

I believe there are also 2 versions of the captivate canadian and the us version which are different phones

Looks like a badass phone, but it needs a higher resolution screen, with all those extra features above my evo I would think a higher res screen would be one.

It's still awesome though, but I have a year and a half until I can upgrade so I'll be passing on this.

Also, i will never get a phone with a physical keyboard again. I much prefer touchscreen to a little keyboard that slides out and feels flimsy and breakable.

Yea I have rooted mine before but after having some issues I came back to my stock software and never really had the need to root again. I do like the % battery left though. I bet while I play poker on my phone I would be able to see the numbers just drop.

That's another thing for me. Whenever I use my roommate's Droid it always moves. If you tap the screen with any decent force whatsoever it makes a cheap flimsy sound.

Alan, go to the market and download golauncher ex. After that's installed search for golauncher ex again and below it you can get different interfaces/themes without rooting your phone. Set your default to go launcher and you're good to go. It will change your background at first and you will need to add your Widgets back on to your main screens but then your set. It will basically change everything on your phone. I'd recommend the wood theme with a different background. Best part is, you can always revert back to the stock mode with no repercussions. If you want to see a screenshot of golauncher go to my screenshots thread and look at mine. I also almost forgot. Go launcher is really customable. Since your galaxy s is just a touch screen you can't flip it sideways and have your phone flip the screen sideways when you're at your main home screens or apps menu. With this, you can change that in preferences.

I had issues with my root not working properly so had to root again to install a custom ROM, but after doing so it runs so much faster it's definitely worth doing.

The battery indicator is called just that, search for battery indicator in the market and download it. though it doesn't override the app if the app doesn't show the status bar to begin with.
