Getting close, maybe another month or two until they're for sale. This has been a lonnnnngggggggg project, I'm excited to see it come to fruition.

(remember, this is still a work in progress, I know the fitment isn't 100% yet)

EDIT: 12/20/10 - Installed pictures on page 8

Are you the guy that sprayed foam in a bucket and posted pics? If so you have come a long way because that looks pretty good. If not it looks good anyway. Not sure how they will look close up but it’s definitely not bad at all.

Any plans for a Stealth version?

It fits the ES and base, but I won't make a specific version for the R/T. A member is going to try and make them work on an R/T; we'll see how it goes.

And no, I'm not foam bucket guy. I remember his thread though, funny stuff.

All in due time... It's going to be a nice one too, not fiberglass. But it can only happen if the headlights sell, so spread the word!

Love them!!! Couple questions...

How much are you going to price them?
Are you going to be able to mass produce this?
Are you going to have a glass/lexan piece to cover the headlights?

1. I'm thinking I'll run a pre-sale for $750 a set, then $800 a set thereafter.
2. I'm doing a production run of 50 sets. If those 50 sell, I'll make another 50.
3. There's a professionally thermoformed XL10 Lexan cover.

DISCLAIMER!

This is NOT the final product. This is still prototype work; once everything it fit and finished we will commence production.

Sets will be ready for sale in 1-2 months.

I've gotten a lot of work done, so it's time for an update.

http://inlinethumb54.webshots.com/33525/2380995450066827514S600x600Q85.jpg (http://entertainment.webshots.com/photo/2380995450066827514dsNOkU)

The brackets finally got made. I was being pushed around by the metal fabricator, so I canceled my order and found someone new. If the price is right, I'd still like to do powdercoating or anodized aluminum. I just painted these for the effect.

http://inlinethumb25.webshots.com/22360/2106015670066827514S600x600Q85.jpg (http://entertainment.webshots.com/photo/2106015670066827514SkROgi)

The lens fits right. It actually still touches slightly at the back where the hood meets, but I like it. Now the other side can finally be made.

http://inlinethumb62.webshots.com/6909/2140423590066827514S600x600Q85.jpg (http://entertainment.webshots.com/photo/2140423590066827514Fiqixi)

As you can see, the lens is currently attached to the bracket via a nut and bolt. It works, but it's a bit... obvious and in the way. If anyone has any suggestions for fasteners that aren't as bulky, please post em' up.

Perhaps I'll offer it for less without the lens.

(High Beams on)

Here's another spot where I could use your help and suggestions.
The factory 1g setup uses a dual filament headlight with 3 leads. In order to switch to a 2 headlight setup, I wired in a simple relay. It works just fine, but if there's an easier way I'd love to hear it.

http://inlinethumb46.webshots.com/22061/2639569210066827514S600x600Q85.jpg (http://entertainment.webshots.com/photo/2639569210066827514vZqjkO)

If this is the best way, I will pre-wire and shrink wrap all the connections and harnesses. all you'll have to do is cut two existing wires and crimp them to the relay assembly.

Which brings me to my next question - is it acceptable to have a relay this exposed? It'll be covered by the headlight, but I'm sure moisture and rain will get into the bottom of the bucket.

I'm open to hearing criticism or solutions.

More pictures to come....

netflix FTW

as for the bolts on the top of the lens, I know they have 'button' style boltsthat have a tapered head that sits flush. OR, which might be harder cause of how far alog you are in the project, you could have the 2 metal brackets replaced with the lense cover itself, by this I mean have the lense continue out all the way to the headlight bucket and then bolt the lens directly to the car.

UTRacerX9

Looking good! As far as the relay is concerned, I would just make sure it gets mounted off the "floor" of the bucket, and tie it up somewhere high. If some water does get into the bucket, then it will not affect the relay. Alternatively, you could build a small box out of sheet metal and put it inside that, using silicon or whatnot on the seams.

I don't care for my car, it's never driven in the rain so it's a non issue, but after I get a set I'll see if I can come up with some good ideas as well.

I actually figured out how to do it without a relay - and it was a lot simpler, lol. But while I'm here, let me post up a new pic of the lights and my front bumper.

Haha, yeah I normally wouldn't put the object directly on the table, but this one is going to be resanded and cast later, so it's no biggie.

It came out really nice, I hope they sell and I don't go bankrupt = )

I don't know if anyone has brought this up or not yet, might be completely impossible. But I sort of like the "robo" look of the headlight without the casing installed yet. I'm not a huge fan of the curvy piece that you painted red. For some reason it looks too organic to me (from what I can tell in the few images here, I know everything's still in development and a lot remains to be done). However, would it be possible to make headlights without that painted piece so we can see the interior workings of the light like the robo modded cars? Just curious, I might be the only one here.

After looking at the images again, I didn't notice the one with the black colored lens on top, I think it looks much nicer with that particular piece, but I'm still interested in the robo-mod.

I got the passenger side lens Friday afternoon and found some time to work on the housing over the weekend. The passenger side is almost done. It needs some minor tweaking, but that won't take me long. I'm just waiting on my vendors right now. The lens manufacturer and I are figuring out the final trim heights for the lens, and the new bracket manufacturer is getting a powdercoating quote for me this week. I'd really like to have the brackets powdercoated in a matte black.

So here's some pictures I took today:

If I make it I'll definitely offer a package deal. I'd really like to get it made out of something other than fiberglass though. I like the stock plastic piece, it would be awesome if I could get it made out of ABS plastic. But to my knowledge plastic bumpers are injection molded, which only becomes cost effective in large quantities-something we don't have here. If anyone has more info on how to make ABS plastic and urethane body parts please share.

Thanks STM, love your work and maybe I'll get to visit the shop some day.

I met with the thermoformer today - lenses won't be ready until after thanksgiving = (

I was really hoping to have them for sale before Christmas, but it's looking like I won't have the first set of XL10 lenses until early December at best.

The good news is that the lens is looking awesome. Right now a pattern is being made to trim and drill holes in the lens. They'll have a nice clean professional looking edge. I've decided I'm also going to sell the lenses and accompanying brackets individually. That way, if anyone wants to use their own lights or make their own insides they can.
*All I ask is that nobody uses the lenses to make their own product and sell it in return.*

Also - Since I now have to shoot the installation video entirely indoors, I've decided to use this idle time to upgrade my shop a bit. It's a 2 bay 30x30 space with 16 foot ceilings (future lift?). One wall is cement brick, but the other three are uninsulated. I bought a 125,000 BTU propane heater and I've been insulating and drywalling the exposed walls. Then tape and paint. It's going to look baller and be incredibly warm this winter.

I really hope that this goes well for you and I appreciate the logic that there are a lot more non RT - RT/TT cars produced originally. But, I'm not real sure that there are that many owners of non turbo vehicles that will spend $750+ for new head lights. My thinking would be that a much larger percentage of turbos still on the road and that the owners of them would be more likely to spend money on the mod.

Of course this is coming from a '92 RT/TT owner who would like to do the mod. :Hi:

Any update on the testing with a RT/TT to determine how much the mod would need to be mod'd?

lat42MS
11-21-2010, 08:32 PM
We can't test them on an R/T until they're done... but it's awful close. I'd say about two weeks. The second set is going to an R/T owner on here, UTRacerX9. I believe he has a spare set of turns to fool around with. AFAIK, here's what R/T guys will have to do:
1. cut the metal bumper bracket where the front bumper meets the headlight bucket. easy with a sawzall, dremmel, etc. I think it sits up too high on the R/T.
2. cut the turn signal in the front were it's a snake eye lens.
3. Maybe paint the surrounding turn signal to match area to match? depends on the look you're goin' for.

The height of the assembly is adjustable, so it would be easy to extend the hood over the lens. I'm not too crazy about angry eyes, but I might experiment when I get a FG hood.

He's going to take some daytime pictures and make a thread, but until then here are a few from last night.

Those pictures don't really do them justice. The guys shooting the video said they looked like factory lights.
I'm going to work on editing the video over the holidays and make a set for UTRacer so we can see a set on an R/T. I'm making the fiberglass inserts by hand and it takes a long time, but I'll do my best to get some sets out after Christmas.

Wow! Very nice sir.First glance deceives you into thinking it's 2nd Gen.I just discussed these lights with UTRacerX9 yesterday. You know i can't wait to see pics of them on his car.

lat42MS
12-21-2010, 03:30 PM
I do have a mold. it came out alright, but I'm probably going to make another some time soon.
To make a set of inserts - I need to wax the mold, spray it with 10+ coats of PVA, 2 coats of gelcoat, light chopped strand, heavy csm, cloth, demold and repeat. It took me like 12 hours to make paul's set, and then I primed, sprayed color and clear coated them too.
I'm going to shop around for someone to make the inserts for me. If the price is low enough I'd like to outsource them so I can focus on designing new parts.

Man that is a lot of work!I'd like to help you out if i can.Just some modern techniques may help.I'm a professional FG moldmaker,so i see all the work your having to put into it.First off i hope whoever told you about the PVA also suggested chemical release as well.Chemical release is expensive to buy, especially for the few molds you may be doing. But if you plan to do more it will pay for itself. The release system i bought still works after 8 yrs.In fact the cost of one light set should pay for it then it's all gravy.Offset that against the amount of PVA your using per part.I'll explain...
Standard is: wetsand part to make mold or mold to make parts.wetsand 220,400,then 600 or up to 800.Metal polish that is also used for FG for small parts i use a dremel. Now the Chemlease release system or latest equivelent.3 part system, 2 passes with the cleaner. Then 3coats of the sealer.1 coat every 15 min.Now the Semi-Permanent(oxy-moron i know) pass.Same as the sealer.
Now your mold will release dozens of parts with the same shine as the original. After five to 10 parts i start waxing anyway.
wax/gelcoat/layup/pull/trim/done.

This is just a test set. They're intentionally oversized so I can cut them back to where I want.

Here's my question: would you rather have them come oversized so you can trim them to your liking, or precut and ready to paint?

I'm going to sell these separately for $40 a set. They can be added at any time.

I REALLY like those eyebrows. A lot. It's almost like a sleepy mod for projector lights. I honestly think the lights look 100x cooler with those, but it might just be that they photograph easier with the eyebrows. Could you try to make an angry set? We should have one for each emotion and have them interchangeable based on how you feel that day.

Are your snake eyes stock? I keep going back and forth between liking and disliking mine. I tried removing them but it doesn't look so good on a bone stock car as it does on some modded cars.

And the flip-up projectors look great so far, I'm seriously considering those. Do you have a rough ballpark for the price?

Ballpark $400 a set. They're kind of complicated to install, so I'm thinking about having you send me your headlights and I do the conversion and send em back. Kind of a costly item to ship though. Maybe I'll offer cores if I get some good working lights. I'd also like to make a piece that replaces the snake eye and covers up the exposed bolts when you remove it.

Oops forgot to reply about this.

I'm definitely interested to see where this goes, so I subscribed, but I have HIDs and would like to keep my high-beams HID as well. So I was thinking of something more like a single projector with a moving shutter to allow me to "flash to pass" without using a quick halogen bulb. Someone near me did a retrofit with HID projectors from a Nissan FX-35 I believe.

try to whip one of those up with a little curvature toward the front end of the bumper. I think that'd look pretty agressive.
I thought I'd try out a quick little paint edit to see what it would look like more curved. What do you all think?

I don't see why everyone is so hell bent on making the line go to the hood. I've tried it in real life; it's too far down and it looks weird if the black upper part is exposed.

They're supposed to be an homage to my first headlight design, seen here in these 2+ year old pictures.

this. the mustache just "sets off" the front of a 1g 3k, and having the snake eyes / turns match is MONEY. add a black kaze lip & it's pure sex.

that's a mistake (imho) i've seen a lot of people make. painting it body color (on anything other than a black car) makes it look like there's a bunch of pointless lines running across the bumper. filling it in (like what has been posted in this thread) is a little bit better, but it loses some character.

imho, you either go eurospec, or you do what you've done, and nightshade the turns so that the mustache FITS. the pervert in me wonders what a mustached, nightshaded eurospec would look like--but i don't think anyone will ever do that.

regardless of what anyone says, i'm convinced that the fugliest external OEM feature on all of these cars was amber turns. the 99's got it right. the rest just stick out like an eyesore--especially 1g 3kgt's. even going to JDM tails doesn't quite fix it; sure it looks better because it matches--but it still doesn't fit right. a lightly applied coat of nightshades does wonders for the amber.

IPD
02-05-2011, 05:18 PM
i think you actually need the eurospec bumper or do some modification to the USDM one. no idea on who carries the eurospec turns though. even JDM was the same as UDSM.

To buy eurospec ones you would need someone in europe to check the local dealer for part numbers. Alternatively there is a russian website kind of like rockauto that you can search caps onlione and get part numbers etc. Perhaps they have euro spec part numbers listed?

Bumping this, as I've finally had some time to play with these headlights with an R/T. Long story short, it looks like it will work very well if you cut the snake eyes in a certain way. Because of the way you have to do it though, the snake eyes piece must be the same color as the fiberglass housing, or it would look really stupid IMO. If you plan on painting the housing to match your car, plan on painting the R/T corners to match.

I'll post up more details and some pics this weekend, I simply haven't had much time to devote to much of anything lately. Right now I have it just sitting in the car with no wiring done or anything because I wasn't sure I could make it fit properly, and passenger side only. (The fiberglass housing piece for the drivers side needs a bit of work to fit properly.)

So, R/T and TT owners, if you were on the fence about this, stay tuned for some pics in the next few days, but it looks like it will turn out just fine for us. :)

Yeah, they are coming. Had a problem with my digital camera so no pics yet. However, I'm not really pleased with the way it turned out after modding the R/T corner. I don't really care that much, because my original intent was to switch to a 97-98 front bumper with these lights anyway. I'll post pics in the next day or so. What I think would be beneficial to R/T owners is if the Lexan cover was extended in the front. I don't think it would be that hard for Kurt to do that, and it would make this look a whole lot better for us.

They're all cut and finished. It would be impossible.

Well, I'm just switching the bumper. I never planned to go with a 2nd gen hood or lights to match, so I was going to have to do a bit of fiberglassing to get it to line up correctly. I started working on my own projector headlight setup about two years ago, but Kurt had already started his, so I scrapped mine. Mine was going to replace the entire headlight and snake eyes piece, but then, once I switched to the new bumper, I'd have to start all over, so I stopped working on it.

Kurt, I'm sure this production run is all cut and finished, but for future orders, if the lexan extended down about another half inch around the front, that would mate up better with the R/T bumper, and after the lens was sealed to the housing, a little black spray paint on the inside of it would work great with the black snake eyes (which would still have to be cut, but not like I had to do it.) Just a thought, for future production runs. I'll post pics today or tomorrow so you can see what I mean, battery for my camera is dead and won't hold a charge, have to borrow another.

As promised, here are some pics.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v474/utracerx9/P2210362.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v474/utracerx9/P2210361.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v474/utracerx9/P2210359.jpg

Here you can see how the front of the snake eye kind of angles up, since there is no screw to hold it down now to the front bumper, so I cut it to where it would slide under the lexan housing, so when that is bolted down, it will keep the front of the snake eye in place.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v474/utracerx9/P2210358.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v474/utracerx9/P2210363.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v474/utracerx9/P2210364.jpg

On this one, if the lexan housing just could be left about an inch longer around the curve and in front of the fiberglass housing, it would extend down to the bumper. Then, after attaching the lens to the housing, you would just need to spray paint the bottom of the lexan black from the inside.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v474/utracerx9/P2210365.jpg

Pic of the actual headlights. They look great, and should convert to HID easily.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v474/utracerx9/P2210366.jpg

One bad thing is that I already have an aftermarket hood, so I had a little bit more gap than a stock hood. Now with an aftermarket headlight, the gaps are a bit bigger. It would blend in a lot more after the housing is painted black though.

Is leaving enough of the stock snake eye to go all the way around not an option? Also, little bit of fiber glass and bondo can fix anything :P

Also except for that front issue it looks great with the stealth turns

UTRacerX9
02-21-2011, 09:14 PM
It might be possible. I completely gutted the backside of the snake eyes, what you see wrapping around the front is only the first layer of curved plastic, it's about 2-3mm thick. The way the lexan sits and the r/t corner piece though, as they approach the front bumper, they overlap. So it might be possible to just sit the snake eyes in front of the lens, but I don't think that would look very good, and it might crack since it's so thin and being bent out of shape. I'm going to play with it some more when I have time, paint the fiberglass, etc, but I doubt I'd be truly happy with it until I get my 97-98 bumper.
