Ok what do I need to do/buy for a replacement antenna? One of the ebay specials ok? I need to test the unit I suppose and see if the motor works and just replace the mast if it does or go ahead and swap the whole thing out?

I bought one of those cheap e-bay ones and they never got the size right. They sent out 2 and both were wrong. I'm gonna get one from 3sx. It's a little more expensive but, hopefully it's the right one. Just my .02

Its a small antenna like the ones on S2000. Looks much nicer than the stock one.

Cheaper to buy from Cherry Hill. Agree it has to be OEM to fit properly

I bought a $12 rubber mast antenna from Autozone, and it worked great!

I'll check cherry hill. I don't want something that doesn't retract. Thanks for the input guys.

Got one from 3sx and although i spent just a tad bit more, I was extremely happy with it knowing it was not only going to fit, but easy to install with the help of this link!

Isn't there an antenna that mounts on the back window glass? Kind of like a stealth antenna?

I'm going to get a replacement mast from Cherry Hill if the motorized unit is still working. I forgot to test it the other day while I was there working on the car. I would like to keep the stock setup if I can. We'll see how it works out.

Interesting so it goes in the same spot and no fitment issues? My motor broke on my antenna so it would probably be cheaper to buy that one than the same thing from a dealer.

Yes. I had one on my old 97, worked great.

It fits perfectly in the OEM location. My mast was stripped and this much cheaper than buying a new one, not to mention looking better. Ill post up a pic shortly.

You can see the wiring going to the center of the glass.

If the antenna motor works, and you don't have an overwhelming compulsion to go to a 'Shark', etc., the OEM refill is the way to fly, I think.

I like the idea of full retractability, especially considering the odd penchant some people have for fucking with other people's cars.

Jeff Lucius' page on changing out old-for-new is a piece of cake; took me about fifteen minutes.

My mast broke and I installed a replacement. Then I upgraded my head unit to a Kenwood DNX-7160. The Kenwood has AM, FM, iPod, DVD, etc. The issue with the retractable is that whenever the Kenwood is not in standby it raises the antenna. So I turn on the iPod and up comes the antenna. The Shark could be a good choice if sensitivity is better than the retractable. And with my Kenwood deck I wouldn't have to worry about which mode I'm in.

Oy.

A bit more expensive than some, but about half the price of the OEM replacements 3SX sells - the one I bought.:(

VR4 Ownz j00,
does the Shark just connect right in or do u need to buy the extension cable?

I heard the Sharks don't work with the hoop spoilers. Anyone tried an amplified "Shark Fin" antenna? How well do the glass mounted ones work? For some reason Denver stations have the worst reception on the face of the planet.

I have a Kenwood head unit and the antenna only rises when I select radio.... are you sure you have it wired correctly?

It hooks right up, no modifying anything. It took maybe a total of 20min to install, and most of that was removing the covers and getting the nut to start.

VR4 Ownz j00,

Connects right in. You can get 12v from the plug from the stock antenna, too. I've had mine a few years, no problems, but I rarely use the radio since I have SD/iPod/Aux.

You can hook up an inline toggle switch for the wire to the antenna. I had it set up that way on my old stock antenna, before I changed to the SharkII one. You have to flip the switch for the antenna to go up, but you can keep it forced down for ipod, aux, etc.

Hmm, may have to double check but pretty sure I wired the blue wire from the Kenwood to the blue wire on the Metra harness. Which head unit do you have?

Yeah, I thought about doing that. I have to check the wiring now. One more thought on converting to the Shark antenna is whether you have to remove the mast when using a car cover.

Uuummmm... can't remember LOL It's a single din with CD/MP3 with a front USB port and a rear aux port. 2 pre-outs. Nothing fancy. Model number will be different to the USDM ones anyway. It had a Kenwood in it and it failed so I was feeling lazy and just bought another kenwood so I could just unplug the old one and plug in the new one [all modesl of the same era have the same plug and pin layout].

I posted the question to the Kenwood forums and one guy said it's a feature since my unit is a GPS navigation with Navteq Traffic. It turns out the Navteq uses the FM radio to get the traffic updates. I then tried disabling the traffic feature but still no joy; the antenna raises on all modes except standby. A toggle switch may be the only solution if I want the antena to stay down while listening to the iPod.

I use a tune trapper, mounted on the rear of the retractable trunk cover inside the car. Puts it out of sight, and it works as well as any hidden antenna I've seen.

Of course, you'll have to do something with the hole.

I can second this. I have a shark attack and it does not work at all. I have a hoop as well.

This kinda surprises me. I looked up the wiring config for your head unit and there is a power antenna wire (most decks just have a 'remote' wire that provides power to a power antenna or an amp, usually blue/white wire where the power antenna wire is just blue). I would think having those separate would keep it down when on iPod or whatever. That's the main benefit of having a separate wire for the antenna.

I thought this kind of thing would be an issue the last time I bought a new deck. I started trying to figure out which decks had that extra power ant. wire, but I decided it was actually better to just hook the antenna to the 'remote' wire to raise the antenna once when I turned the thing on, rather than having it go up/down every time I changed to a non-AM/FM source. Saves wear and tear IMO.

Again I'll state you will not find a better antenna. I have picked up radio stations that start to die 50 km's back with a factory antenna.
