It has been a battle.. We have been struggling in recent years to keep this platform cool and exotic but now it is obvious .. 3S offically have moved from the cool to the not cool list ..

This guy standing next to his soon to be all riced out SL is the proud new owner ...

The wall has fallen my friends...

it was fun while it lasted

he is 16 soon to be 17.. looks like 12

must be the consequences of too much video games

It's the fun of having something unique. Same reason the 3/S is cool, there's just not that many around anymore.

Oh but the whole Appreciating asset thing for good muscle cars kinda kicks ass too. I've yet to lose money on an antique/classic car. Can't say that for anything else I've owned.

i'll give you the appreciating value thing. it's totally inexplicable to me, but i guess baby-boomers have a LOT of rather inane sentiments. :p

unique? not hardly. i can't spit in any town i'm in without hitting a half dozen 1g camaros, tempests, darts, chevelles, etc. and that's not even going back further to the WAY, WAY, WAY too prevalent amount of deuce coupes or pickup-truck resto-rods.

Kids will say the same thing about your "desirables" in 20+ years. It's all relative...

Jeremy

i guarantee i wouldn't be nearly as attached to this platform if it wasn't capable of hanging with "the big dogs". performance matters to me. it doesn't appear to matter to those stuck in the 60's.

and what difference does it make if a deuce coupe is original or not? THEY LOOK FREAKING IDENTICAL. honest to god, no one outside of the 3/s community gives a shit if you strip-frame-restore a 99 vr4 or if you clone one from a different year and paint it--without stripping it down. the same applies here. genuine or not, it's the amount that matters--and when it comes to deuce coupes, there are WAY too many of them.

67 buick gs400? looks like a gto. sure, there's differences between all of the 60's era cars; but they all share the same freaking design elements. any casual observer can tell the supra and 3000gt are different cars. most "non-indoctrinated" people would have a hard time differentiating between muscle cars.

p.s.

in 20 years, the 3/s will still balls to the wall fast with bolt-ons. meanwhile, newer cars will be neutered by liberal pussies and older, 60's era cars will still be running n/a on carbs & being proud of running 13's.

p.p.s.

it's just hard for a "young pup" (relatively speaking) like myself to understand the sentimentality. the cars didn't have unique design features (look at the design of a 3/s compared to everything else; now look at the design of a 69 gto vs. everything else). we "forgive" fox-body stangs because they're cheap and stupidly fast; but 60's era cars are the worst of all worlds, imho. they look too similar to each other & the performance is tepid.

bluzvr4

i kinda agree but then again totally disagree a 67 chevelle a 67 camaro and a 67 vette look nothing alike

IPD
02-02-2011, 03:32 PM
a vette has, for the most part, always stood apart from the "run of the mill"; and that is why i better understand the collector fascination. they also perform better than most other cars for their respective time period.

if you put the average person in a room with the following debadged cars:

67 dart
67 falcon
67 chevelle

they WOULD NOT be able to tell them apart.

again, i get the fascination with unique sheet metal (39 zephyr--to an extent, for instance). split-window stingray, definitely. dmc-12 delorean, MB 300 gullwing, lotus esprit, bmw 507, etc. there are cars which just are DIFFERENT from everything else, and i get that. i don't get what makes owning a dart over a falcon so desirable. blind brand loyalty? the first car you ever owned?

if i were an aging 60 year old baby-boomer, i'd be plunking cash down on that supercar i lusted after but never got; i wouldn't be blowing my wad on prettying-up a 60's mass-produced hunk of sheet metal which stole design elements from every other 60's mass-produced hunk of sheet metal. i'd be buying a miura. i'd be buying a bora. i would not be buying clones.

then you're proving my point. the 3/s is a great car to own because people don't know what it is. if your car can be ID'd by the average 8th grader, then it's not unique. the only reason people say camaro/firebird with our cars is because that's about as close as they can conceive of. honestly, it doesn't FIT any molds; which is why i've never heard anyone make a declarative statement about a stock-bodied 3/s as being a "GM product" with any confidence. it's always an interrogative.

i'll never understand the "blend in" segment. buy a "classic" (and i use that term loosely) car, fix it up, paint it like everyone else's, go just as slow as everyone elses, etc.

then again, i'm a guy who would take a 928 over a 911 any day of the week; regardless of which 911 it was.

Actually it proves MY point as well. $500 says the MC wasn't a young guy. But, I bet he could point out the difference between a base Coronet and an R/T. It is ALL relative to the era you grew up in, and/or immediate influences.

The draw of muscle cars is the raw simplicity. No gadgets, driver band-aid bullshit, computers and other such nonsense. Just pure badassery topped with heaps of torque. They will always be cool...because nothing else looks like them, sounds like them, smells like them and so on.

Pontiac: the body-cladding division
GMC: the "haha sucker you just paid for a body kit on a chevy" version

not to pick on just GM. chrysler did the same damn thing with plymouth. ford did the same thing with mercury.

but it's still a question of why it has following. the 3/s (like all 90's japanese flagship imports--save the miata) was unique.

so why isn't steve68 driving one?

glass? as in fibreglass? wait...isn't the vette all fibreglass since it was introduced? :scratchchin:

Stop arguing like a girl, stay within context. I guess you're not familiar with the phrase "Henry J. steel"? We were specifically dicussing deuce coupes, which goes on to include any re-pop kit car bullshit. So yes in actual context, glass is gay. /final answer

and the 3/s shares sheetmetal with....what?

Itself? ;) Was there really a need for both cars? Nope, not at all. Was there a need for the Eclipse/Talon/Laser? Again, absolutely not. I mean, what a super marketing idea...hey guys let's bring back EAGLE! Because I'm positive the general public just couldn't get enough of this:

seriously, comparing it to GM is hilarious. how many w-body cars have been produced?

GM has always been the king of cloning itself:

Chevy: the garden variety
Buick: the old people's version
Cadillac: the pimp version
Oldsmobile: the "we don't really know why we're making yet another varianty" version

Again, point proven. Nothing has changed, every brand shares chassis and steals cues from others. What people like is a product of their environment, and there's nothing wrong with that. Acting like an elitist and slamming every car that isn't the same as what is in their driveway is beyond silly and makes them look like an uneducated dipstick.

I never compared the 3/S to GM, or any specific manufacturer. The only comparison I made was uniqueness of the 3/S vs. a muscle car. Specifically, turbo 3/S and comparable trim muscle cars. You brought Darts and Falcons into it. Apples to oranges, do you compare a sohc 91 Stealth to a 91 VR4? Right. I'm talking about 396 or better Chevelles, GS Stage 1's, ACR Cuda's and so forth. Not a slant 6 Fury.

You know what it is?

Cue up the video of Matt's 8-second quarter, and listen for the big-block in the bleach-box as Matt launches.

As 3S will never, ever make a noise like that - time-slips be damned.

anyone can make a car loud. any v8 can be made to rumble.

imho, the crown jewel of performance is a single-digit timeslip in a car that's as silent as a prius. :)

p.s.

i don't think "kit-car rebuilds" are ghey. if, say, 10 years from now, someone started offering them for the 3/s; i'd be in line. :) looks the same, so what difference does it make? losing $5,000 in car value because the alternator bracket doesn't have the same MFG numbers as the rest of the car is fucking hilarious to me; but that's exactly what i see with GTO's, shelby's, etc.

give me a factory 5 over an original shelby cobra any day of the week. ;)

perhaps, but it's the god's honest truth. at least with a DSM it's cheap to make fast...but it looks good doing it. fox-body stangs...well....

congratulations. your 6-second car looks identical to the one on cinderblocks that i passed on the way to the dragstrip. :)

Fox bodies look good. They look better than the piece of trash 74-78 Mustang II's and the SN95 94-98's. They definitely look better than the 05+.

that's not actually saying much. kind of like saying a fuso is sportier than a sprinter. :p

i actually liked the 94-98's a bit better than the fox-bodies; even though they still suck. honestly, other than 1g's, i've had no respect for the brand until the 2011's came out.

p.s.

bluz, buick GNX > monte carlo > fox body.

Fox bodies are fugly. The only Mustang besides the first series (up to and including the Boss models) would be an 03-04 Cobra, or an '11.
