I want to say a big "Thank You" to JasonY who made this happen for me .. If it weren't for him this build wouldn't exist .. He not only put together the perfect sleeper build for this car .. He also executed it flawlessly .. As far as the build, we started violating the car on the night of November 12 .. Worked on and off through December 3rd minus the holiday weekend .. Then resumed December 29th and finally started the car January 14th .. The goals for this build was a complete sleeper and keeping the check engine light OFF !!!

Currently have 230 miles on the setup .. Running the car right now on wastegate pressure, and the plan is to break the clutch in and then add fuel .. Due to timing and business obligations it will most likely be a month before this happens !!!! The car is running and sounding great .. The turbos are very audible at 2000rpms and the Tial - 750 - Open exhaust combo gives the car a real menacing sound !!!! I couldnt be happier with the results

Awesome build! Especially liking the FMIC while retaining the fog lights. AND...And repainting the engine bay while the motor was out.
Curious how you did the power steering reservoir on the passenger side. Looks like you used the oem oil cooler. Got any details you can provide?

One question, Did you leave the black pieces that are blocking part of the AEM gauges in? and if so why?

Jason had the perfect idea of taking the old oil cooler and just placing it in the stock IC location (passenger side ).. We cut the existing metal tubing coming out of the pump (drivers side)to the point where it was flush with and would run behind the frontmount, and then we soft lined it over to the cooler .. I cut a few mooring brackets out of thin steel and we just bolted it up .. Also placed the horn in that spot as well ..

Yeah we did leave them in .. And the reason was
A. If we cut into the stock housing we werent sure how the plastic was gonna react to being cut or dremeled out .. There was the possibility it might not have turned out looking very clean ..
and
B. The only blocked view is the first number on the temp gauge, and since the other two numbers are easily readable its not an issue whatsoever .. You can see either 80's-90's or 00's-20's .. On another note, I just realized I didnt post a picture of it but we also have the Wideband mounted right behind the steering wheel on the column .. Its dead center and very in your face so you can see everything happening in the car all the time !!!

I probably would have cut it out and made it work somehow. I think it would bug me.
Edit: I was asking because I was wanting to do the same thing with AEM gauges.

I would like a picture of your wideband setup. I have an innovative xd-16 setup but havent installed it yet due to not being able to find a place for it that doesnt suck or looks hella ricey (i.e. a pillar or mounted on the dash).

Im sure Todd will get a pic up, but this is the "pod" i used and its awesome since you can take it apart and just make a small notch in the column cover to stick the mount though and then reattach the loop and have the stand portion hidden under the cover.

Nice. My Defi Gauges came with something similar, maybe I can modify them some to make this work for me.
subscribed. i also seek a FMIC that is hidden behind the 97-98 bumper. preferably with black piping to boot. i want the sides open for my oil/tranny coolers.

This mod is great, and it was so easy .. Took like twenty minutes tops and the stand Jason picked up for it also adjusts to any angle you want .. http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee213/tazz_375/IMG_20110117_2140391.jpghttp://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee213/tazz_375/IMG_20110117_2140331.jpg

This one was the IPS frontmount .. 750hp spearco core anodized black with the hardpiping kit powdercoated gloss black .. Im pretty sure it was 1400.00 (same as the ETS) but dont quote me .. Whatever I paid it every penny for the look IMO

Thanks a lot, Lugnut.
After looking at my dash, I think im going to cut a slot in the dash shroud, the black plastic, in the lower right hand corner, where the radiator fluid/SRS light is, and use some velcro tape and just stick it to the clear plastic dash cover. It should work really well since the gauge is only about 5/8" thick, K.I.S.S!

This was the most painful part of the entire build for me and I honestly hope I never have to do it again .. With that being said I figured out several timesavers as I walked down this road and I would be happy to write it up for you if you want .. I went off of stealth316's guide and I used a gear wrench to get the screws loose .. Also disconnect the large metal bracket thats in the foreground opening of the airbox access or suffer its sharp edges .. Do the radio and vent moorings and just push it back out of the way first thing .. As far as the gauges go Im content with them .. I understand what your saying and depending how that plastic reacted it could be a real clean look ..

I asked about putting it in the drivers bezel and Jason came up with the suggestion of using the fuel gauge for it and then placing the fuel gauge down by the rear wiper button .. But he had this other idea from the start and I have to say his idea of the steering column is perfect as its right in your field of view, and you can see whats happening in your motor and watch the road at the exact same time ..

Well I spared no expense and bought mostly the best items I could get .. And honestly I didnt keep track of the money either .. With the list of things on the start of the thread as well as all the unlisted and hidden items like new oil cooler and new used tranny and every little nut and bolt and tensioner etc etc I think I am around 17-18k into it .. And Roy, I started buying parts for this at last years black friday sale .. As far as the car itself I didnt touch and didnt wanna touch one thing on her until we had every single part sitting here .. .. I will throw this out there for all of you, and I know many of you already know it .. But do plan on it taking at least three to six months to get your order of parts once the money is spent ..
if you got only the best, why settle for a "whinebro" fuel pump? :suspect:
Lugnut
01-21-2011, 03:08 AM
I put mostly .. I also got a few other parts on sale on the black friday last year I just couldnt pass up ..
just giving you a hard time, man. my setup is essentially stock vr4 right now, and i can't STAND my whinebro. hotwire or no, it annoys the crap outta me. i need something quieter.

Whats even better is you could focus costs on parts; whereas JasonY and yourself did the installation. Very cool. Do ya'll own the motor stand/engine hoist? I guess you can rent those things.

Price wise this really was a steal IMO .. And it could have been done cheaper, which is what I was meaning to hint at above .. Personally, I am firm believer in new parts and we probably didnt need too change some of what we did .. But I feel better that it has been done .. As far as the hoist and all we are lucky enough to have a couple stands and hoists right here in the neighborhood and plenty of jacks so all in all it worked out really well .. Soon as we were done with the hoist and stand they were removed from the garage and freed up alot of space .. I think the black car only sat outside maybe four nights total .. There are several hooked up cars in the "hood" here .. One of my neighbors has pair of Olds 442's .. One is a 66 tripower and they made somewhere around 200 originally .. As it stands there are only 16 give or take known left to exist .. Its somewhere in the 500+ wheel range .. The other is a 70 convertible ..Its in the 400+ .. Both are real sweet and most noisy !!! Their is also a late 60's 10-11 sec mustang and a v8 Lotus here as well .. We did have a nice 400+ wheel 300zx here as well but that disappeared a year or so ago .. Sadly it was an automotic :(

We got the injectors new plugs and walbro in the car last week .. Set it at 15 pds of boost and tuned it in like five minutes with the ARC2 .. All has been running well this week and the car is just starting to fishtail and spin first and second .. The car is really fun right now ..Tune has been solid and steady .. Set it and havent touched it since .. I had to reorder a few SS clamps for the IC piping as in a couple places on the system ones I had purchased just werent quite big enough due to angles etc... They should be arriving today tomorrow or wedenesday and from that point I will have to tear down the bumper and install those along with just the new fuel relay and we will be boosting up to 20+ this weekend .. ..

Update .. As you know I have been taking my time getting this car up to speed and have just been adding a system and then shaking the car down trying to get all the T's crossed and I's dotted along the way .. Today we made alot of progress as the summary of all the work over the last few weeks came together .. All hardpiping clamps have been changed out to T-bolt SS 40psi clamps, and the meth injection and hotwire kit are in .. Boost is set at 20 pds right now/1000cc's meth and the tuning with the ARC2 from 15pds to 20pds w/ meth took about one minute .. We really only changed one knob two clicks and it set perfect .. The car is sooooo rediculously fast right now Im just in awe .. Traction is still really good and the car pulls soooo hard I just cannot see many street cars that could have a prayer to beat it on gear pulls .. Power goes all the way to redline with no drop off whatsoever .. Really has me thinking about what a 7800 rev limit or even a 8300 rev limit would look and feel like on this setup ..
Only problems I have had to date are several random leaks on fluids and it seems that alot of bolts I know I tightened on one day I find loosened up again 3 or 4 days later ..Feel its best for several reasons if I just go and put locktite or something of that nature on everything thats important to stop the issue .. Otherwise its really been a solid, problem free build and I couldnt be happier with it .. I have to go away at the end of the week .. When I return which will be around april fools day we will install the last two systems .. The DLI and the KB boost a pump .. Once the car is up and running on say 26-28 pds I will go that same week and get a dyno ..:mitsu:
