Hey guys, I thought I'd post this thread up here to share pictures and keep my progress on this car updated as often as possible for you. There is a lot of custom work done to this car which I am willing to discuss. I am also very open to criticism, suggestions, questions, and anything else that can contribute not only to my build, but the community as a whole.

Alan, is it ok that I post the link to my old thread on 3si as a reference? I know there were a lot of important questions and topics discussed, and it would be a waste to just throw it away.

I am going to also reserve the next couple posts to keep the pictures in a nice, orderly and presentable fashion to track the progress from the beginning to the very end.

What does the build consist of?

Twin TD06H-20G Compressors mated to TD05H 6cm Turbines with internal wastegates welded shut
Tial 38mm Wastegates and BOV
Custom built Equal Length Longtube Headers and O2 Housings
GT-PRO FMIC
2.5" Custom Charge Pipes from Turbos to FMIC
3" Custom Charge Pipes From FMIC to TB
Custom Driver's Side Intake Manifold with 90mm Q45 Throttle Body
DR Stage III Heads and IPS 272 Cams
UR Cam Gears
ARP Head Studs
AEM EMS with all accessories
PTE 780cc Injectors
Twin Walbro Fuel Pumps
SSB Fuel and Oil Lines
Aeromotive AFPR
Mishimoto Radiator and Slim Fans
Corbeau Fx1 Pro Seats, Harnesses and Brackets
Broomfield Racing Billet Transfer Case Housings and 300m Output Shaft

What's left to do?

Oil Feed Lines
Vacuum Lines
Transfer internals and Install transfer case
Install Timing Cover, Heater Hoses and Spark Plugs
Put the rest of the interior together
Tune the Car

Hot damn. That is badass. Great fab work!

20G_VR4
09-12-2010, 09:54 PM
Markoverclock from Turbochargers.com is doing 99% of the fab work. I just installed the seats and thats about it. I give him a helping hand whenever he needs is, but I dont have the technical expertise to do any of the fab work shown in the pictures. In fact, you can see him in some of the pictures. It has taken 2 1/2 years so far working a couple hours on a few Sundays each month. This actually went from a simple header/turbo fab into an all out build. The might as well syndrome kicked in very early on.

dam thats a lot of custom work!!!! i really like how those seats match the stock charcoal / tan interior. how do the seats feel?

the seats feel comfortable, but sit a bit high on the rails. Im 5'10, and my head is about an inch and a half away from the headliner.

From what I researched, the motor is stock, but the rods looked polished when we pulled off the oil pan, and also had some kind of stamp on them, but Mark couldnt tell because of bad lighting. Also, the 109,000 mile block has no signs of scarring, scratches, detonations, or anything. It was actually very clean when we pulled off the heads. I talked to all the previous owners, but they all said that nothing had been done to the car besides regular maintenance. The motor is going to stay stock for a while, as I dont really have the funds for a built block.

We are going to tune it using 93 pump gas as well as E85. We're hoping for 600awhp on E85, which shouldnt be too hard to do. I just dont want to push it past that to keep the block alive. In a year or two, ill upgrade to a built 3.1L

yea, mark can pretty much turn these cars inside out and put them back together, no sweat. Im going to rev it to about 8-8300, but no more. Once again, the stock crank probably wont be able to handle much more than that, so i dont plan on stressing the motor too much until i can build it.

Im sorry for not updating you guys in a while. The car is almost done. I don't have any current pictures, but we should have the car started and on the dyno by the end of May. My senior year of pre-med has been kicking my ass, so I haven't been able to finish it as quickly as I wanted. Here's a teaser pic from a few weeks ago. Its more complete now than what is shown...

I still have the stock oil cooler; no aftermarket ricer parts here. Im building this 20G beast right.

but seriously, I'll replace the oil cooler if oil temps get too high, but I feel that the stock one will be adequate with nothing in the way of its airflow. The FMIC pipe is routed underneath and behind it, so its got a clear shot through the bumper. Its pretty much the only stock part left bolted to the motor, apart from the stock bottom end itself.

subscribed. i'll be the resident pessimist on the performance of 20g's on a 3.0L engine--i'll believe it when i see it. i would expect much greater results from an extra .5L. i just don't think a 3.0 can gobble that much air.

if that's on a 3.0L...DAYUM! i think i'll probably end up sticking with chinabay turbos for my stroker...i like not having boost at idle. :)

boost at idle is the greatest,

acts like a supercharger, power of a turbo lol

its a win/ win.

i think its all the piping is done right, along with a stright intake into each turbo. ( blow though) it will spool around 3-4 which will be a monster. be creeping on some supra's

also i forgot to say something, I am not 100% sure, but i think the harness is wrong, and with it being bolted down like that wouldn't it break your shoulders since the harness bars alot alittle movement to theres a sudden stop to the body. or something along those lines, i thought i heard something about that then on the news some kid died from that. but im not 100% sure how it was set up but i think it was something like this

The harness point should be above your shoulder. Just like normal seat belts.

I fixed that issue today. Those pics are pretty old. I installed a roll bar and got most of the motor put back together.

I really want Ti/Al 20gs, that would be awesome, but for now im going to see what this setup can do. Im shooting for 600awhp on E85. Next year, Ill throw in a built motor, Ti/Al 20Gs, and push it.

i just want to update you guys with what's left to do:

Get fans working (need the jumper harness to them or find a way to wire them in)
Install Crank and accessory pulleys and belts
Install 300m output shaft and billet tcase
Clean and install charge pipes
Install Fuel Bulkhead
Wire up water temp, oil temp, oil pressure, IAT, and MAP sensors
Weld in a throttle stopper
Reinstall seats
Install rear rotors and SSB brake lines all the way around
Reinstall Hood and Front Bumper

All the wiring is done except for the fans. I still need to find a way to bypass the jumper harness or get a new one. We were going to prime the motor and start it last night; I had a video camera ready, but the ECU fuse blew right before we were ready and we didnt have any more 15amp fuses.

Whats left?

Weld in throttle stopper
Reinstall seats and glovebox
Install 300m output shaft and billet tcase
Install rear rotors and SSB brake lines all the way around
Reinstall Hood and Front Bumper
Start the car and tune it on E85

Unfortunately, I have finals this week and a wedding to go to next week. Looks like the car wont be started till 3 Sundays from now

Just got the motor together last night. Spent 3 hours from 12am-3am trying to start it with little luck. We can get it past start up but it wont idle :(

Markoverclock loaded a map from his stealth onto my EMS, but adjusting it is a bitch. I was wondering if anyone can provide me with a solid base map to at least help me get my car idling?

I have PTE 780cc/min injectors, 272 cams, 90mm throttle body, twin walbros, and TD05-20Gs. If anyone has anything remotely close, please help me out! I would greatly appreciate it!

Whats left to do?

Install Billet Transfer Case
Install rear rotors and SSB brake lines all the way around
Start, Idle, and Tune
Reinstall front bumper and hood
Reinstall Glovebox and seats

Quick Update. Got her running Sunday, but ran into a few snags.

My BOV isnt opening, forcing air back towards the turbos, so I'll need to get a new spring for it. Also, one of my injectors isnt spraying any fuel. Im going to call IPS today and see what I can do about replacing it or maybe the set.

Otherwise, its nearly finished. I just need to put the interior, front bumper, and hood back together.

Pics and vids of it running and together should come up sometime next week.

Ive run into some problems while tuning with mark. Every time I get the turbos to start spooling, it runs out of fuel and goes way lean. I have 4psi by 3300rpm, but run out of fuel, even when mark has rescaled the map and added over 33% more fuel. Mark and I were thinking it might be one of the fuel pumps. They are horridly loud; unlike anything I've ever heard. I can hear them over the exhaust at cruising. Also, after the fuel pumps prime the system at key on, the fuel pressure rises to 40psi and then bleeds off. After turning the car off, the fuel pressure also bleeds off pretty quickly.

I dont know what else it could be. Can anyone with any knowledge about this help? thanks!

Cleaned out the gas tank and was running awesome on 10psi with a 10.5 afr and 14 degrees of timing. I even accidentally overboosted once to 17.8psi @ 4800rpm and it ran like a raped ape with afrs and timing still the same. Eventually, I was tuning at 10psi in 3rd gear and about two seconds after I let off and started coasting I heard a metal clanking noise and the motor died. Spun bearing mod.

Towed it back to marks house and I guess Im building the motor earlier than I expected...

We pulled the heads and everything looked fine. 150+ psi compression on all cylinders. Timing was perfect. Turbos were seized. Mark took them apart and found bearing material in them.

Mark, what would you charge for a set of headers like that?

Those werent cheap collectors, they are SPD collectors at $230 each. I have since made a jig to make full collectors, so i would say to make some like that again, your looking at about $500 each for some one offs. also the v-bands are male and female. My new single kit will have a equal length header design in software then made on the car, these ones are very very close that you see in his car.

I was working on turbos tonight they should be done rebuilt by tomorrow.

The car is almost buttoned up. Just need to get the glove box back in and she's all ready. Did a decent tune to wastegate pressure (~8.5psi), with no knock and almost no timing, and she's already quite the car.

I can't give markoverclock enough credit for everything he has done. He really knows these cars inside and out.

I'll try to get some pics up soon.

I hope to attend, but I'm constantly haunted by small problems with this car. We replaced a boot on a spark plug wire because the spark burned a hole through the side, then all of a sudden the dash and tail lights start going out. We have taken apart the dash, removed the radio, disconnected the active aero, etc, etc, done everything we could, and it still keeps blowing the tail light fuse. Am I missing something?

Also, for some reason, both my coolant hard pipes are leaking at the water necks through the couplers (stock coolant hoses cut to make couplers), so I may have to get some new couplers.

n2nsanity
10-10-2012, 06:08 AM
A while back I had a problem with the tail light fuse repeatedly blowing. It ended up being my rear defroster wire shorting out somehow. I think it's a green wire that runs from the hatch, up the passenger side floor. I don't remember how I figured this out, but I either disconnected the rear defroster at the glass or yanked the whole wire out.

yah we disconnected it in the rear, but didnt disconnect it under the floorboards. Were exactly is that wire ran and where does it end up at so we could just disconnect it at a plug or something up front.
