View Full Version : MMCd Comes to Android

I've been working on rewriting MMCd (from the ground up) for the Android platform to allow for datalogging via a bluetooth adapter developed by a fellow 3/S'er. Promotional videos can be found here:

The board and software should go on sale within the next couple of months.

Any chance of a USB connect to the phone? USB connectors are cheaper than bluetooth. Would give another option :)

That's awesome. Now we can mount a ipad style unit [ie Samsung Galaxy Tab] as a logger. Phone screens are too small. Or a Toshiba AC100 laptop [it's a netbook running Android].

I second a usb connection, and enable charging so we can leave it plugged in without worrying about phone dieing, good idea on this, I looked when I first got my droid, in the app market for any kind of logging software, didn't find anything other than gps MPH stuff.

Hybrids will be next, don't worry. We're planning for the full line of Mitsubishi ECU's.
Also, I'm going to include a feature that calculates your instantaneous MPG from your injector duty cycles vs. GPS vehicle speed ;) (Whomever mentioned GPS MPH reminded me of that)

The androids can tie into a usb power supply already; the blue tooth is for logging which is sweet; less wires in the cab:bigthumb:
Also the palm MMCd has a big numbers option for 4 items of your choosing. It would be nice to keep or improve on this feature.
The android already does navigation, will it be able to log concurrently? I guess thats not too necessary.

I still would rather see a USB option. If my phone is USB'd into the radio for hands free (soon to be Indiana's only way to use the phone) I would still like to use the phone for logging. Oh and having my navigation running behind the logging app would be cool too. Phone telling me to turn while the screen still shows logging info :)
Oh also will this be a market download? Then order the needed adapter from you? If so I could end up getting the download and making my own cable if the code will recognize the info coming via usb instead of bluetooth :)
Thanks

You can make navigation run in the back of any app on Android. Why are you not going to be allowed to use bluetooth? I swear, our government gets stupider every year. They cater to the retards of the country instead of those who have common sense.

Bluetooth is allowed.. They are going to ban cell phone use in a vehicle unless you are hands free. My bluetooth will be busy tied up to the radio so I can talk on the phone when needed.

man, you guys still don't have the hands free law? I thought that was goin pretty much nation wide the middle of last year. They did that around then, in Oregon, it's bullshit though, I see people talkin and textin on their phones all the time, stupid assholes that almost run people off the road...I drive half the day for work, doin deliveries and have some idiot run me off the road at least once a day, it seems... I don't get all these stupids talkin n textin on their phones while driving.
The cops seem to just give out warnings, yet people are gettin tickets for no license plate lights or tail light out...go figure...which one is more likely to kill someone or seriously injure someone?
This could be interesting for the hybrids. I'm in for my info, even though I don't currently have a droid phone.

There is no option for USB. It's a slave device, it can't initiate connections. However, I don't see what the problem is...? As a police officer, I can tell you that if you're not using it as a phone (i.e. calling), it won't count for the hands-free laws.
The app will be paid for through the market, the hardware will be bought from the hardware dev directly. I'm not sure whether he's going to set up an automated website, or make a wait list, or what.. that part's all up to him.

My phone which is quite old, can pair with multiple devices. How would using the bluetooth adapter for the ODB hinder use for talk? I believe you can connect multiple devices at the same time. I've paired more than one to my phone but haven't tried connecting more than one. Although my laptop lets me have multiple devices paired and connected via bluetooth.

Amen to that! I've been pulled over for all that stupid stuff before, but I see dozens of people every day that come into near collisions and/or run people off road all the time, but never see them get pulled over.

My question evidently wasn't phrased well seeing the responses. If I am in a phone call with my bluetooth will it be able to continue logging at the same time. If it was able to use the USB port to connect to the ECU like the serial to the PDA then I could do hands free phone (keeping me legal) and watch the logging from the USB port on my docked phone. Right now I can use my phone via the bluetooth in the radio and log with my m125 Palm via serial connection. Does this make better sense? Heck I have the phone paired with several different things now but I have never tried to use 2 paired things at the same time. Maybe I should experiment and make a call with my bluetooth headset and bluetooth print some pics off during the call. Is this clear as mud? Maybe this is a limitation of the phone not being able to read from the USB port?

I'll have to test it out, I have a bluetooth headset and use my phone to stream music into my car. Since they are two different types of connections I'll see if it can work at the same time. Or use a bluetooth HID device and see if it works concurrently with a phone call, playing music, etc.

I honestly can't forsee a problem using both bluetooth devices at once. The ECU uses a very low amount of bandwidth consumption. Depends on how the phone handles it, I suppose - I'll have to look into it. Going to post a new video later today.. and perhaps put the newest version on the market for sale (free updates in the future, of course).

It has been released as a sort of "preorder" so that the progress can still be followed. Updates are - and will always be - free. It is, however, very functional right now. Thanks to those who have been following and support this You can find it in the app market by searching for "MMCdroid"

I'm trying to get him to create a google checkout account so that he can start taking pre-orders for when he gets the supplies in (which should be fairly soon). I'll tell him that there's definite interest and we'll see if we can set something up for tomorrow. The software can be downloaded already, however. I just need a way to get the 388 people who downloaded the initial "proof of concept" release notified of that fact.... :\

Not necessarily, aside from the fact that you'll be the first to know when hardware is available (I'll add a link that takes you directly to the order screen in an update) and any updates that I have, plus it allows me to find and fix bugs, and allows you to give me input on what to add/change.

I wanted to ask just to make sure there isn't any problems later for the devs on this. Since MMcd was released under GNU licensing up to version 1.8d charging for the app doesn't violate this does it? I would just hate to see someone from the dev chain come back and file suit?

He had to rewrite it entirely I believe, so I don't know how that would work charging for a software they gave out for free. But if he gives out the software for free and charges for the BT adapter then he'll be fine.

He should have contacted those that signed up on the preorder. I'm not sure what's going on (whether he did or didn't.. hell, you may already have the hardware now). I'm working on a hard cable adapter for those with a smaller budget that don't care about being wireless and don't mind having a cable, but it'll be a bit before that's ready for production.
I'm finding it hard to find time lately to get to the software now that I work so often on top of trying to get this 2G DSM running so I have a car...

I was actually going to ask if this will be released open source but clicking the market I found my answer :)
Reason I ask is I've done some android development before and was curious as to how this will fit/look on a mini tablet. I'd like to be able to replace my scanmaster with something a little larger and this would be perfect on a tablet. If you had no intention of accommodating them I was hoping to modify it myself for personal use.
Edit, Since you're the only dev, if you'd like some help I'd be more than willing to help.

I've run into a huge lack of time lately, though I leave for the military in about two months so I will be resigning from my jobs in order to focus on my family and have a little free time before I have to leave, and this project is one of those things. Stay tuned. Also, not sure what's up with the bluetooth hardware producer, but I've been developing one that will use the USB cable and is compatible with *all* android devices.
For those who felt this was a scam... wouldn't make much sense to put hundreds of hours into developing this in order to make one single working copy, don't you think?? o_O

That apache is my brother-in-law's - he's a pilot. Says he can get me flying with him easily due to my ASVAB score. The job i'm going into will get me top secret clearance (15R doesn't, for some reason) and it will be easy to transfer from there.

yup on the vision req...also on the backdoor-to-pilot, i know (knew) a crap-ton of guys who made E5 in their respective classification and jumped into the WO ranks ;)
all of which would have been my plan but for the vision requirement, and when i was in LASIK was not authorized...

STATE OF THE PROJECT ADDRESS
*****UPDATED 01/11/2012*****
So I'm sure a lot of the fervor and anticipation has long since died, and perhaps some people were still holding on with a thread of hope. I've been silent for a long time, there have been no updates, etc. So, I've decided to relay to you what's been going on.
I began working on a hardwired transmitter, which is still in the mix, but on the backburner. The guy who was working on the bluetooth adapters - rather, my contact - somewhat fell off the face of the earth. I wasn't sure what happened, so I emailed him a about a week ago. I'm not sure how much detail I should disclose, so I'll just say that one of the guys that was working with him is unable to do it now and he lost all interest in it.
SO WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE US?
As of last night (and after much deliberation for the last week) I purchased the rights/unassembled hardware/programming for the bluetooth adapter. I've also modified it and made it about 1/3 as big by using surface mount components. So, it's back on. I've got four days off a week (for now anyways) in which I can work on the project. Expect to get an email soon if you're one of the first ones on the waiting list for the adapter, and even sooner if you've already downloaded the program.

Today I finished re-designing the PCB. I've shrunk it down to about 1/3 the size of the model that I have. I sent the files off to be prototyped, and should have my copies in hand within a few weeks. After everything is confirmed working properly, I will do an initial run of 100 boards. I also have 13 of the first style coming very soon that will be shipped out to the first few people (after they pay for the board, of course).
So in short... prototypes coming.. 13 people get it before everyone else.. then ONE HUNDRED boards to be made. And here's a mockup of the board.

I am currently in the process of revising and testing the new version as it has a few bugs - but the only difference in the two is the size of the unit.
Gonzo: Android-only for now.. but it would be pretty simple to port over to Windows/Mac/Linux due to the beauty of Java, I'm sure.

Still very interested in this because it would make my life ten times easier when logging. Hell, right now I almost CANT log due to the cable being loose going into the palm. Will there be any programs to sync it up to an excel graph without much hitch? I would buy, but I need to see some videos of it before doing so. Glad to hear there's an update!

Interested to see how this pans out. I would like to figure out a way to view this via the pioneer app radio 2 which is going to support android, obviously the touch screen on the deck is not going to take over control but it would be cool to be able to view the logs on it.

Doing testing today, hopefully shipping the first batch out tomorrow. Here are some pics:

The third image shows a request-reply on the oscilliscope - the left waveform is a request for voltage, and the right waveform is the reply of 11.98v from the ECU. Also shows a comparison of the old boards (green) to my new design (purple). Haven't even began to test the new ones yet though...
And MADMarc: the logs are saved on the SD card in CSV format, which can then be uploaded to Google docs, dropbox, or emailed. I'll likely have a standalone program in the future as well for viewing the graphs on computer.

Essentially how it works.. you will connect the adapter to the OBD port of your car with a 12V line powering it, either from accessory or constantly on. It will remain connected in your car, as there is really no reason to remove it and you can tuck it out of the way.
Then, you pair the device to your phone through bluetooth and use the software to connect with the device. Pick what sensors you want to log, pick a color if you want to graph them, uncheck "pause". Bang, that's it.

Is there going to be a cheaper USB cable alternative?
Edit: Plus charging feature as previously mentioned.
Thanks

A USB alternative would not be cheaper, as it would have to have a stronger microprocessor to emulate ADB. It's the only way I've figured out that will enable me to transfer bytes via USB cable (and it uses a pretty nifty workaround to do so).
However, the next version will have standalone logging to an SD card, hybrid ECU support, dedicated 0-5v inputs (for wideband, oil pressure, etc), onboard MAP sensor, and a few more bells and whistles. Buuuut... I obviously can't offer it for cheaper. What's the main thing that's holding you back right now?

Do you plan on adding support for hybrid ECUs in the future?
