View Full Version : THE NG11 Announcement - No hype, just the facts
Here it is… The biggest announcement this NG Committee has ever made… And you'll only see it here because the "other forum" won't allow me to post NG-related info...
This is the one event that I swore would have to take place before I could step down from the Committee. It’s the one we’ve worked toward for more than a year now… And now it’s here. We have it. It’s official.
After hours of work, and bazillions of emails and phone calls, Peggy has secured a pace lap at Indianapolis Motor Speedway – the home of the Indy 500 - during NG11, the 20th Anniversary of the year the Stealth should have been the Pace Car.
All registrants will be permitted onto the track, whether a 3/S or not, but non-3/S’s will be asked to remain at the back of the line for photo-op reasons. The event will take place on Friday morning, so that most weekenders and full-week registrants are already in Indy. Only paid registrants will be allowed to drive on the track.
When asked how fast we’ll be allowed to go, we were simply told, “Oh, don’t worry – it’ll be fast enough.” Lovin’ it already.
Roger, IndyStealth, will lead our cars directly behind the IMS Pace Car… Oh… Did I mention that our contact is going to try really hard to get IMS to bring the official pace car out of the museum to lead the lap? That isn’t guaranteed yet, but we’re working on it and it looks very positive right now.
We also plan to have a photographer on-hand to take pictures that will be available afterward at an additional cost. We know you’ll want to remember this and will keep you posted on this as well.
I can personally promise you that this Committee will not make this event happen again. This is a one-time opportunity that you definitely don’t want to miss (not to mention it would be really hard to repeat the 20th-Anniversary part). If this is our last NG (and any of them could be, realistically), then we’re going out with a huge bang. Come be a part of it. I promise you won’t regret it.
Watching for your feedback, with baited breath…
Rocket

Firstie :)
Ok after reading the post I am timing putting the stealth back together after 3 years of sitting in the garage at the right time! I have been around the track only in the tour, the opportunity to actually drive on that hallowed ground is AMAZING! :)
Thanks for your hard work! and WOW! What an announcement!
(Just don't do what a couple of the Viper guys did and pass the pace car for a hot lap :P )

Actually, you didn't specify IMS. You just said they'd let us around the oval... There's an oval at ORP.

HOLY CRAP!!!
Ok, I'm signing up definitely.
I took a Winston Cup driving school class at Dover International Speedway, in Delaware, and I remember thinking, how much fun this would be with the Stealth!
I believe the one in Indy is a longer track, so I don't think the banks will be nearly as steep as at Dover. Once you're on the track itself, and you're looking down from the top of that bank, and see how steep it really is, it's SCARY! But it was a scary kind of fun.
Now, how to get both the Straman and the green beast there....

Thanks, everyone! We're so happy about all the excitement! I can't tell you how difficult it's been to keep this secret for so long. We've literally been working on it for over a year now, trying to make it happen. There's more news coming, but it won't be this big. Could anything, really? :) We just hope to pull everyone out of the woodwork and get an impressive showing. With the historical factor, we think we may even be able to get some news coverage on this. I won't know for a few months, but it's an option we're looking into. Keep talking! All your enthusiasm is getting me REALLY excited for this amazing event!

As for video editing, there is a member who said he'd do stuff like that for me... Not sure if he's still willing, but I can look into it. I'm pretty sure he would. I hope I can get the Stealth assembled, painted and on the road for this one. It will be like a new car. If I don't, I can always drive the 3000GT. I am definitely not going to miss this NG. I have already put in for vacation time.
I hope the Stealths get to lead the pack during the pace lap. It is only fair for the Dodge Stealth to get top billing and get its due credit just as it was originally announced as the Official Pace Car before politics and irrational thinking substituted the Viper as the ceremonial leader of the pack. No disrespect to the 3000GT of which I am also a proud owner.

the lead car should be the one in the museum, imho. the ones immediately behind it should be any and all pace-car replicas that are in attendance. after that, fair game.
p.s.
can i have position #7?
The only positions that have been decided are that of the IMS Pace Car (which hopefully will be the Stealth from the museum), and Roger's pace car. Any other pace cars that attend will be directly behind Roger. Non-3/S's will be at the back of the line for photo reasons (I'm sure you can ALL appreciate that). Beyond that, we've made no decisions. There are certainly many options... Some that have been considered are: Stealths then 3000GT's, lining up in order of registration number, lining up with members who have attended the most NG's first and on down the line from there... I believe it's only fair that Sponsors driving a 3/S will be behind the pace cars, but even that is still to be determined. There are A LOT of factors involved in this one... Very complicated, but very fun!!! Loving the positive feedback. Wouldn't it be great if the one year we get to do this happens to also be the year with the most 3/S's in attendance? Sounds like many of you will be coming out of the woodwork. You have no idea how happy that makes the Committee, or how "worth it" all this work becomes... Thanks again for all the positive feedback and all the bazillions of emails I've received. You sure can put a smile on a tired girl's face!
how about, "lined up in order of production number"?

registration number makes the most sense, and would be the easiest to organize.
registration number makes the most sense, and would be the easiest to organize.
i suppose. but it also means that the front is going to be packed with retirees and people who work independently. DOD schmucks like myself are going to be saddled somewhere in the back. not that there's anything wrong with that--but you will see some stratification.
I'm sure we're also going to take into account the photography. This event will be epic and will be a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing. We want to make sure it's PERFECT. We worked harder for this one lap than we work for the whole NG put together. It'd BETTER be perfect.

Heads up, on 3SNG.org, 3SI is still listed as a sponser. Someone should change that to 3SGTO.
Also, the register button doesn't work. Is all the info on the NG site up to date?

I suggest you let people bid on positions...make money for the next NG. :D

it would take more than 100 cars to cover 3/4 of the length of that track. It would take 656 3s cars bumper to bumper to circle the track completely.

Granny, the banks are only 9 degrees, I don't think that you need to be going 120 to stay on a turn that slopes 9 degrees.
Oh geez... Here we go. I MAY have misunderstood - I have no clue. I was told that our pace cars cannot go side-by-side with the IMS pace car. It's my assumption that no one will be side-by-side, but I could be wrong on that. Remember - NOT A CAR GIRL. Just doing the best I can, and maybe I misunderstood. We are NOT going to drive them crazy asking them all of these questions. We can find out some of this when we get there or when we talk to them again, but I won't (and Peggy won't) continue calling them for every little thing. LET IT GO. Enjoy the fact that we're going to get to do this. If we drive them crazy, they can still take it away. Let's focus on the positive and not worry about the unknowns.

Most pace laps I've been on or heard of are single file just to make it as safe as possible. With that said pace laps are typically around 60mph but, depending on the driver of the pace vehicle, can go a bit quicker. I wouldn't be expecting anything near 100mph though. :p

that's pretty much what i was expecting. 60 mph is easy to do 3-wide on a track like that--but it may very well be single-file. i'd LOVE to get the chance to go balls out for a lap though. ;)
p.s.

Vicki and I were discussing this on our trip to our SC house yesterday (more sanding the floors...yay...)
I said it should go like this, and it would make for great pictures:
Go by year. 1991 first thru 1999 last
and as much as you can go by color. So Front of the line is 1991's rows of Red, then rows of black, then white etc.
As they are rolling by the Pictures of the progression of the platform would be rolling by and all in color sections.
As far as Stealth/3000GT, that's a coin toss. The pace is a stealth, so even though I am partial to the 3000GT, maybe stealth? Or maybe alternating line by line.
I think this would be best.

Thank you, Steve. Guys, just keep it civil and realize that we're going to make a decision based on way more than you're going to take into account. I'm not looking forward to it. This will be a VERY difficult decision to make, and we know some people are going to get pissed off.... Please just remember to be glad you're doing this, we're not charging you an arm and a leg for it (the NG is eating the cost of this, and it's substantial), and trust us to make an informed decision. If you want to discuss, that's fine, but keep it civil, don't criticize each other's thoughts, and remember that I'm reading it. And DON'T WORRY - we'll keep you informed of what we decide and exactly how.

It is fun to speculate and be excited about things to come. It was made clear previously as to how things would be decided and noone protested the fact.
Should we not discuss and have some fun while here?
Edit: Lori, no one is questioning or bitching about the event or how it is ran/scheduled. I/We all appreciate the effort you and others have put forth to make this happen. Please don't take the discussions so literal. It is just excitement welling up and flowing over...

It's all good, I wouldn't even say I was upset, nor did I think anyone was having a fit. The phrase wasn't meant to be a flat out attack, sorry if it was taken that was taken that way.
Ok, a few additional things... First of all, no, I won't publish or PM the exact amount it's setting us back. That's primarily because we'll never know what it's adding to our insurance cost. Anyone who wishes to contribute is certainly able to pick up a sponsorship or something like that - we always welcome donations, although they're not necessary. CoopKill - it's not about everyone bitching now.. I've seen this happen too many times. Everyone discusses what they think is best, then it comes time for the event and we don't do it their way and they'll confront me (time and time again) during the event to discuss it. That's where my concen is. OF COURSE being excited is good, and discussing it in such a way is a great thing. It's like when we choose a location... Everyone discusses, everyone gets all excited, then they find out the location and they get all pissy because it's not where they wanted it. Forget about the $5M insurance policy that costs us $10-15k for one week... Or forget that the track wasn't available... Or whatever... They get pissy and it turns into this major debate, which in the end goes sour. We want to make sure this one never goes sour. It's way too cool of an event for that.

I say there has to be some kind of order. This will avoid pure chaos of everyone trying to get in front when the event comes around. I like the idea of by year, by color. especially if we could line up in rows of say three. Maybe even get cars that are identical (first gen, same color) in the same row of three. If there are that many. Same for stock body panels vs. body kits? just thoughts to throw out. Would take a lot of effort. Thanks again for putting all of this on, Lori! Actually, I think trying to make a specific order would just complicate the process, and start to take joy of being in such a parade out of it. I certainly don't want to pissed off while driving the lap because somebody decided to be late, but just early enough that concessions are made and everyone has to move to allow them in, and then it happens again. It could also end up taking more than twice as long to set up, depending on how much staging are there is. IF there is going to be any kind of order, it better be very easy to discern who is in what category, and there should be maybe 3 categories at most.
Going by years is wholly complicated, because you will undoubtedly have cars like mine, that is a '94 with an ALL '98 body style. Only my headlights and quarter panels are original. That should change a bit as I put the AA back on. My point is that putting my car up front with the other '94s would just confuse people if it is announced that they are going in order of year, and just look distasteful. It would be much easier to say, "Classic Body Style", "Partial Body Style", "Full kit Body Style". It would make it easy to organize, give spectators a chance to see what the cars originally looked like, and allow them to see what people have done to customize them. It also gives a sort of, "Here is how things progressed on the platform" concept (although it may not be true, but they don't know that).
Just a quick note... We won't be making exceptions for people being late. It absolutely won't be done on this one. You snooze, you lose. That simple. IMS won't mess around, and we can't mess around.
How about arranging the cars by colour so they spell out "www.3sgto.org" as a giant banner?

Grouping cars by body style would be fine as well. In terms of easy lineup, it could probably be made as part of the registration process. When you register you must put in what kind of vehicle you'll be driving in the lap (including year, body trim (RT vs ES for example, or kit), maybe color, etc), that way the organizers can simply assign you a number in the line so that the appropriate cars are grouped together (however the organizers want to do that). If it's not single file, then just make rows. Say for example, you get Row 3, spot 3, then you'd be in the 3rd row back on the right side (assuming 3 wide). Doing it at the time of registration would allow time for the organizers to determine the best way to group cars together, and everyone would get assigned a spot number when they show up. This just risks that some people wouldn't show up, and maybe have holes that would need to be filled. Alternatively, you could have them register that info when people actually show up at the hotel the first day. That way you know they'd be there, but there'd just be less time to organize the info and assign spot numbers. Just my thoughts.
:)...i really don't care where i end up. i'm fairly certain that you'll be able to pick out which one is mine from orbit. :D

At least 3 of us from within 5 minutes of each other will be going. And we're 11 hours away. I don't see how this could turn out with less than 200 people. That's only 4 people per state.
Very Excited :)
No more updates?

Where are you getting these numbers? Is there an official roll call somewhere? 4 people per state shouldn't be too high of expectations.
And if your #s are definates, then you can add at least 3 from NC. That's not including anyone from 3sx.
yeah, but you'll have like 20 people from TN and GA combined--if not more.

There's always plenty of people who say they're gonna go, but then find a reason not to. It's true for any event. If gas is $5 a gallon this summer it'll definitely influence some peoples plans.

Your numbers Duttch?
Are you starting a list? That one needs updated.
Minimum 3 from Washington as of now.

What kind of turnout have we had over the previous years? From the pics I've seen, it looks like 50 or so each year

You're a little low. More like 80 to 100 each year. With the opportunity to lap the IMS this year, there should well over 100 cars. I'm making the 2000 mile trip from San Diego.

We've averaged about 115 for the last 3 years. Highest was 225 in 2005
Get ready, boys.... Registration will open as soon as I have final confirmation from the hotels.

I registered # 7!
Should I wait for the payment ? Not that I mind, but I didn't saw the early registration special on. If there is no rebate, I will pay right away instead of waiting.
Thanks

No we are not using the same hotel as NG10.
We have two side by side hotels. They are closer to the track I'd guess about 1/2 the drive.
