View Full Version : Single Turbo VR4 #2

I converted my other VR4 to single turbo in 2009, then sold it to buy a house. I thought I was done with cars after that, but I got the itch again and ended up with another '92 VR4 with 13t's. So since I regretted having to part out the previous car I decided to re-do the single turbo build on this car.

I don't really have any goals for the car, I just want something fun to drive to work and cruise around in on the weekends. I've got a spare motor that I'm going to build this spring, then I'll see how much boost it can take.

And heres a few videos of the last car, I watch these to keep the motivation up. I never ran over 16psi on the last one, but even that scared me a bit. Most of the videos are 5-10 psi.

Testing the 2-step. With the same settings I was able to build 20psi in ~2 seconds on my friends RB26 w/ a GT42R. I've got some new settings this time so it should be better.

Doing some highway tuning pulls in the previous car since I don't have a dyno in my garage:

It was probably putting out less HP than a stock VR4 at this point. Just running the timing from the AEM basemap.

I'm using the same 4" exhaust as last time, its actually really quiet:

yeah, same here. Really enjoy your threads, you're quite knowledgeable keep up the great work and update us on the build! The single turbo setup sounds sick!

Are you going to go with the same style of wastegate plumbing??

I only as as I don't see it in the new set up yet,

Very nice! I wondered what happened to your old car, I didn't remember seeing anything past that 2-step testing. I can't wait to see how this build goes, looks great so far!

Since the ABS is gone I could dump it out the fender again. I can't believe I'm even considering this, but I might recirculate it. Those Borg Warners whine so damn loud and I love the sound, but I also love the sound of an external wastegate. I'm either going with a Synapse 50mm again or dual Tials.

Here it is:

I just woke this one up and he seemed confused as to why I set him on my car in the cold garage. He wouldn't put his head anywhere near the inlet.

This is "Greddy", he inspects all the parts before they go on the car:

Great to see you jumping back in!

I never did get a hold of your manifolds... guy got sketchy and stopped replying to me when the deal was about done.

So I acquired an old set of manifolds from Wayne and got my S400 running on mine!

What intake manifold is that? Don't you think its gonna kill your top end?

Roy
01-02-2011, 01:25 AM
Nice! got any pictures?

I remember that guy, I sold him the manifolds and crosspipe, he was supposedly going to send them off to some other guy to duplicate the kit. Haven't heard anything since then.

The intake manifold is from a V6 Dodge Avenger. The inlet is almost the same size as a stock 3S intake, but I had to port it a bit. I'm not sure how much it'll flow, but I'm hoping to buy a TIG welder this year so I can make a new one. It'll do for now, I'm just happy to not have to loop the IC piping around to the passenger side.

I don't feel like sleeping yet, so heres some good AEM EMS anti-lag settings for random people that might find this on google:

“alt ignition fixed”
alt spark fixed -8
alt spark trim 0
alt fuel trim 5
alt off over rpm 6700
alt on above rpm 6000
alt off below tps 88
alt on above tps 90
alt overboost 30 (make sure you change this one to suit your setup!)
alt on above load -10

What is it about the exhaust on your VR4 in the first video that makes its sound so amazing?! Is it the 4inch? Almost reminds me of a supra. Looking good so far man. Keep it up. PS, you should find a dyno when you're all done. :)

Very nice work, looking good!. What`s the spool up like on the single?.

Roy
01-02-2011, 01:13 PM
On a 3rd gear pull full boost came on around 4500-5000RPM, theres almost enough time to take a nap while it spools up. Its' really not too bad though, definitely a different feeling than TD04s.

I wasn't nearly done tuning it though, so I'll see if I can improve it this time.

I found this in one of my old threads:

Hey Roy, whats the AR on the exhaust on your S400? I can't find something with AR range .80 to 1 from an S400 class turbo. I would hate an AR of 1.32 on a 3.0L.

Roy
01-02-2011, 10:48 PM
It's got a 1.10 A/R. I bought it from: Forced Inductions (http://www.forcedinductions.com/)

I'm doing my single setup again.. I have a few questions from you though.. Where do you get the pipe for the turbo manifold from? And do you run both o2 sensors?

Roy
01-03-2011, 12:18 AM
I bought all the piping from: Ace Stainless (http://www.acestainless.com/) . I'm going to run one wideband O2 sensor in the downpipe.

1992redvr-4
01-03-2011, 08:09 AM
Did you use 1.5" sch10? I've got a pair of the cnc blended flanges that are cut to fit that piping. Any more pics of the manifolds?

Roy
01-03-2011, 09:15 AM
Yeah, 1.5 schedule 10 into 2.5" piping to the turbo, since that was what matched up close to the T6 flange. I could take some more pictures next time I'm in the garage.

Oh another problem I had last time was plugging the rear turbo oil feed. What do you use for that?

Roy
01-03-2011, 11:53 AM
I plugged the rear feed with a bolt. I bought it so long ago that I don't remember the size, but you could probably take one of the banjo bolts to a hardware store and find it. When I temporarily plugged the front I cut the feed line off right at the banjo fitting and welded it shut, that would work as well.

Looks like you could clean it up alot with that different plenum. Is that the Chrysler one?

Roy
01-03-2011, 04:59 PM
Mid 90's V6 Dodge Avenger, Chrysler Sebring, maybe others as well? This one was from a '98 V6 Dodge Avenger if I remember correctly. A bit of grinding had to be done to clear the rear valve cover, and I had to make block-off plates for the EGR and other unused ports.

A few more things I just remembered, the stock 3S throttle body won't bolt to this manifold, so I made an adapter plate for that. The throttle body will also hit the master cylinder, so it has to be mounted at a bit of an angle.

I likey!! I am a HUGE fan of BW turbos.

I like your setup:) I thought long and hard where I wanted to mount the turbo, and that's the best place. Looks the best and keeps AC.

Roy, why did you consider the s400 vs the s300sx?

I haven't posted this up yet, but heres my BW single setup:

Hey, Roy.

I noticed the upper rad hose touching the secondary front exhaust pipe.

http://roycormier.net/images/projects/vr4/163108_519318801724_292300185_692332_3892963_n.jpg

Are you afraid of melthing that? Or will you wrap that exhaust section? Even then, will it melt the hose?

Thanks,
TP

Unknownvr4
01-03-2011, 06:40 PM
Hes probably going to wrap it like his old set up.. But on my old set up, the MAF touched the pipe and even though it was wrapped, it melted it alittle bit :(

Roy
01-03-2011, 07:00 PM
On my old setup the injector resistor pack touched the downpipe which was wrapped, it got melted a bit . If I can't move that hose far enough over when the coils are mounted on the motor then I'll probably just weld up a metal pipe to replace it.

I went with the S400 since it was only $650 new, I was really close to buying an S300 this time but I'm on a tight budget right now.

Nice lookin' setup vr4_rider!

The intercooler piping is 3" OD 16 GA, 0.065" wall thickness.

From a scale of 1-10, how hard was it modifying the 6G73 manifold to fit? Austin from STM has the same intake manifold but with a 1G DSM master cylinder for extra clearance.

Roy
01-03-2011, 11:00 PM
Grinding the manifold for clearance was easy, 1 out of 10. If I remember correctly it only hit in one spot on the rear valve cover. Making the block-off plates on the drill press was also easy. But it was the TB adapter plate that was a pain in the ass to make. I don't have a plasma cutter, so cutting the big holes in the TB adapter took a lot of work with the drill press and die grinder.

I also had to remove and block off the IACV housing in order for the TB to fit where I wanted it. I still have to make a plate to remotely mount the IACV, I just haven't felt like doing it yet.

Overall I'd say 6/10 or so.

Unknownvr4

Yeah... I have pictures but I'll have to get them hosted...

I highly suggest S400's... they are cheap and awesome... and will make all sorts of top end power.

S300's are very very nice and responsive though.

Roy
01-11-2011, 03:10 AM
People who are used to TD04's would probably think its laggy as hell, but I'm alright with it. Most of the fun was after 4000RPM, before I parted out the last kit I hit ~16.8psi by 5000RPM in 3rd gear. Full boost seemed to come on between 4500 - 5000.

I was using the wastegate settings to control boost, installing a boost controller might have improved spool a bit.

Roy
02-05-2011, 06:27 PM
I got the car to idle today, the tune is way off but I'm happy that its finally running. I still need a wastegate or wastegates, BOV, and have to heat wrap some things. That should be done over the next few months, then I can start tuning.
