So as some of you may know. I work at a manufacturing plant that which my dad is the president of and my grandfather is the CEO. We manufacture food service equipment to a majority of fast food restaurants to 5 star restaurants. In-N-Out burger, Taco Bell, Domino's pizza, California Pizza Kitchen, Cosco Pizza and so much more are our customers. My dad is willing to help me out and develop some great products to the 3S platform utilizing the company. We have a full engineering staff with all the latest equipment and software. That being said, I want to make new parts for myself and for others so I decided to take the initiative to make somethings happen.
This is about 30% of the factory and what I have to my disposal. Sorry bad cellphone pictures.
There is over 10 cnc machines including laser cnc.

So my question is to you guys, what do you guys want to see developed and what do you think will be popular?

- An improved center console lid design. I've been thru 3 of them in 8 yrs...... latch and/or hinge break
- anything to reduce cost of small aftermarket parts - spark plug cover plates, radiator brackets, battery tie-downs, door sills, oil caps, etc. etc.

Call me weird but... I'd be down for a nice tall shifter.... Similar throw as stock 93+ but tall and up close to the steering wheel. Something to use for road racing. I want quick ACCURATE shifts that I dont have to reach for the shifter and take my hands far away from the wheel.

Start with something simple that will sell fast so you can stay in business. Start out with exhaust or dress up style items. Don't start making by turbos and "Electro-viscous variable center diffs". I don't think you have the capacity to produce complicated and reliable products yet. What are all those machines for anyways some of them look like they could be CNC machines but I'm not sure with such a LQ photo.

Thanks for all the input guys, as for as just making the small things to stay in business, I don't really have to worry about that. The manufacturing plant has been open since '76.
However there is a cost for everything and I don't want to produce an item that will not sell. I don't plan on making anything in regards to carbon fiber or fiberglass. Just strictly Steel and Aluminum.
I do plan on making AWD Sway Bars. If you guys want to help me produce some products and can help contribute to that specific projet or have something for me to reproduce please send me a PM and we can work something out.
Everything I product in regards to performance will be Quality Assured and Tested by someone reputable in the industry. I do not plan on making turbos or anything too complicated.

:hahaha:
This made me lolz, while it would be nice if you produced "flux capacitors" it certainly sounds like your equipment is more tuned to "terminator 2" type products.
I like that you are this interested in the platform, you have the resources, AND your applying it to serve this community. Thats cool.
What I do want to add is your basic business plan; just for thinking about:
Strategy: basically dealing with market forces, suppliers, buyers, competition.
Capabilities: you have assets and resources to produce and deliver product.
Value: you need to making value for everyone involved.
You have 2. One (1.) should help give you some boundaries on what you decide to produce. For three (3.), you need to produce it so you aren't in red, and everyone else perceives it as a good value. Finally, you can also "compete" on qualitative terms also; target a niche, i.e. super high quality ... key chains.
I'm in for sway and strut bars. and perhaps some dressy pieces like door trim (where the plastic kickplate goes). I'd also like to see some seat brackets made specifically for this car, that the mounting bracket for the seat is adjustable. These "universal" seat adapters have been a PIA and the past two sets I've tried to install on friends' cars have been a nightmare.

Eric, loving the idea. I'd like to see strut bars, however, stock they could either come as a solid bar. Or the buyer have the option of having something cut into like the key chain tags you were having made. Yeah it'd tack a little more on the price but it'd be worth it I think.

Maybe I'm retarded for sayin this, but what about trans and engine internals, especially anything AWD parts related since there's a scarce supply of parts, if you can make gears, we could change ratios, such as the "MR/JDM" gearing or maybe good syncro replacements or something...I dunno, but I'd say that sort of thing would sell fairly well, beings there's not many good sources for that stuff, especially if they're of quality and competitive pricing

To clarify this a little, Dynamic Racing makes them you just need a 90mm TB to put on it (preferably from the Infiniti Q45). He'd have to make an intake set up to go w/ it for all models for everything to fit correctly.

Here are the ones I would lie to see. And considering the equipment I see in your shop you should easily be able to knock these out.
- Fuel Injector Wiring covers like what EK2mfg used to make Anodized and Plain Aluminum
- Cap dress up kit without logos all over them.
- A Stainless headlight to core support cover to hide the void I keep my HID/Halo control boxes in (2nd/3rd gen) <--I love this Idea
- Battery relocation tray for SP680 batteries
- Short Shifters "Sillimar to the Ralliart or Bob's shifter"
- Din gauge inserts
- 3 point Front / 4 point rear strut bars "Prefer the rears work with the Sunroof Mounts".
- skidplate to cover the oil pan
- Bolt in seat brackets
- billet pedal-covers
Some of the ideas that have been listed I don't think are going to be possible as I don't think "From seeing the shop pic's" they ahve the equipment to make them.

No need to be short sir,
If they really are hand made and not outsourced I would certainly pay $400 for one. Logically a person would think they would still need some sort of fabrication shop.
Anyways it seems like there are a lot of great ideas to work with here! I can't wait to start seeing some of the finished products. It looks like you're gonna have your hands full Atrosity

Look into Broomfield Racing they make the billet transfer case (http://www.3sgto.org/showthread.php?1114-Billet-Transfer-Case-Housings) for 5 speeds you can get the front and mid housing for 925.00 shipped. They also make the 6 speed end cap (http://www.3sgto.org/showthread.php?1115-Billet-7075-6-Speed-Transmission-Endcases) for 1379.00

Thanks to John Monnin, He took a lot of the guess work out of designing the parts, Broomfield used Johns information I believe, to help produce what he's now offering us, thus one of the reasons he was able to offer the prices he has...
John Monnins Solid Parts Index (http://www.wrenchmonkey.com/Images/Solids/3000gt2005/)
As for cheaper than Broomfield, maybe not, but maybe other parts or something, I know a lot can be done with CNC and it amazes me that most peoples requests are for cosmetics when we have plenty of that offered for our cars already. Why not go with parts that will advance our platform or help stay afloat...like engine/trans internals that we can't seem to get for less than an arm and a leg because of getrag and what not

That is why I started this thread. I want to get feed back and information to provide parts that aren't available to the 3S platform that we can actually use and if you guys have a great idea and want to help me make it a reality I am sure there will be some way of compensation. I have the resources to make some serious things happen but I lack the knowledge in some areas to produce some aftermarket parts. If I have the part in hand I can reverse engineer it identically.
Why not go with parts that will advance our platform or help stay afloat...like engine/trans internals that we can't seem to get for less than an arm and a leg because of getrag and what not
i'd suggest some, but the market for what i want couldn't possibly hope to afford financial returns of the magnitude which would make it practical for r&d. so yes, i would like a billet xfer case and a vcu to run the 6-speed driveshaft nipple (and a nice billet driveshaft). it's never gonna happen though.

Instead of paying 300+for a new window regulator, or paying someone 50 just to get a used one and it break too. I would like to see some small components like the little guide/supports on the top of the regulator that the cables fit into, and slide through. The stock ones are made of plastic and over the years break. So those and the pulleys as a replacement piece. Both driver and passenger.
I would also like to see aluminum dash vents. Fully functional ones too. Just like the stock ones. I am not talking about the defroster vents. I dont like that they break so easily.
Though a defroster set like stock that you could just slip in and they would snap into place would be better than the 3sx ones.
If you make strut tower bars, please make them either A, clear a plenum with a .25" spacer. Or B, make it like the Pit-road M one.

I wasn't meaning anything against anyone, it just seems most people are after cosmetics and debating against it, I'd suggest to you, if you have any doubts in things, talk with John and broomfield and anyone else who has more knowledge of parts and things they've designed or helped design

It's better to have it suggested than to leave the thought in the dark, if what Atrosity is saying is fully true, there might just be a way, and we ourselves can R&D the product, there's been quite a bit of products from people, developed and tested by us, our community until something came to full development. If we talk with people like Pampena, Monnin and others who really know their way around things and who have helped build and design parts for us, we could, quite possibly get some serious parts developed tested and made into a reality.
Our platform has some of the best knowledgable people out there, we're lucky to have them on our side and if we have someone with amazing resources like Atrosity paired up, our possibilities could quite possibly be endless.
Like I suggested before, I'm not sure about billet cnc'd gears and things, but if it's possible to have success, I'd go with transmission internals, the supply on those things is scarce and expensive and the demand is high, I'm almost positive, everyone who really drives their car could use new syncros or gears or other internals that help the shifting, but like myself...most of us just say "eh, it shifts, I'll tear it apart and rebuild it when it totally goes" and to replace with a better made improved over stock part would be more desirable, especially if the cost is near the same

I'd be so in on sway bars... 3sx only has the saner bars on occasion and other than that there is no option for TT sway bars. Especially the stock rear is too weak for hard cornering. An upgraded rear swaybar is plug&play handling improvement. An upgraded front sway bar wouldn't hurt either but the rear is more important.
Tubular lightweigth subframes would be awesome too. That rear subframe weighs a ton!
On the "R" side of R&D I'd like to explore the possibility to use modern driveline components in our car. The Evo middle diff is placed inside the transfer box so if there would be a TC housing that bolts to our trans and uses Evo TC internals that would be wicked. Sadly those diffs go for like 1500€ on eBay. Too much for me for just hacking it in pieces.
More down to earth I'd like a place where I can buy all sorts of flanges and cnc'ed adapter pieces. I think there's quite a lot of guys like me who would attempt building their own strut bars / manifods / O2 housings / you-name-it if they could just buy the machined parts somewhere. Cutting pipe and welding parts together is doable but not everyone has access to a CNC mill.

How about upgraded transfer case gears and a header kit like nelson with the turbos located above the tranny. Only at a reasonable price not $9k
i3igpete
12-22-2010, 05:20 PM
my guess is, simply because people demand them. it might be necessary for a 240, which has a hatch with no cross support. but our cars already have a thick, welded square beam connecting the towers. strut bars, no matter how many connecting points, are simply redundant to this square beam.
http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p239/i3igpete/forsale/IMAGE_084.jpg
on coupes/sedans with normal trunks, the c-pillars and rear shelf also provide a shell structure. much stronger than a piece of aluminum with pivot points held together with 10mm/12mm bolts. i mean really, how much force do you think is realistically being transferred by that 10mm bolt?
http://automobiles.honda.com/images/2009/civic-sedan/safety/safety-header.jpg
something that WOULD help 3/s frame stiffness is to some way mimic this rear shelf that hatchbacks lack. For example, you can see that our C-pillars are pretty thin and don't support much load. tying the rear struts into the roof/b-pillars (straight and X-braces) would help body stiffness much more.

The reason why the x-bars are pointless on a 3s is that the 3s is structurally NOT a coupe and that the rear chassis pillar does not take any load. It basically only holds the quarter window glass and interior trim. Look at the chasis panel overview in the technical information manual.
The way the top half of the X-bar is bolted to the 240 just does next to nothing to structural stability on a 3s because there is just nothing rigid to bolt it to. I'm not sure how the 240 pillars are designed, maybe it makes sense there.
Now loose the rear seats, tilt that X-bar to the middle pillars and bolt it to the seat-belt holders and you're in business. Thats where the 3s upper chassis is designed to take lateral load.

Probly a long stretch of anything here, but I would also like to see Direct port injection. Like the engine in the Taurus SHO.
I still hold to my previous statement of the small parts that we cant get our hands on as a more definite thought.

direct injection needs camshaft-driven fuel pumps to produce the 1000+ psi fuel pressures needed, and heavy-duty injectors that can withstand that level of pressure and still have good open/close response. it will NOT happen without OEM R&D.

The Duratec 35 is .5L bigger, makes 12psi, and only makes 45 more HP(compared to 320 on 2nd gen). I dont see any advantages from DI in that.

From what I understand you use less fuel to make the same power. By ways of you are introducing the fuel directly into the chamber instead of over your hot valves. Its like a meth set up. It cools the chamber by itself though and is more efficient than us having to get more fuel in there to prevent knock.

Tiberius

GDI heads are nothing like normal 6G74 heads. Not even the intake ports are in the same place.
Don't forget that GDI engines and generally most direct injection gasoline engines are lean burning engines. The engine management would dramatically change along with the engine. Have fun tuning a lean burning engine for boost!
In conclusion I'd deem this no where near worth the effort.

that may be the case with many GDI engines; but not all. most of the highest performing OEM applications currently use GDI. the prospects for potential are pretty high, imho.

I didnt mean they were close to regular heads, but if 6g74 heads are identical to 6g72, adapting a 6g74 GDI head to a 6g72 should be cake.

Fix For Original Oil Cap Leaking Problem
This may be an overly simple idea but one day in the garage, just for fun, I took apart the original Oil Cap to see if I could see why they never really sealed that well [I have one of the 3SX caps on each of our two TT’s and they seal perfectly].
Taking it apart it is plain to see, once you remove the center screw that there is a simple circular disk inside with a gasket [made out of I don’t know what] that is supposed to seal it.
Bottom line:
A simple replacement circular disk, of the proper thickness and diameter, to replace the original one, with one single half circular groove in it to accept an O-Ring could solve the Oil Cap leaking problem inherent in ever 3S on the market.
The ring could be made of aluminum, fast and easy to machine and probably sold for a lot less than custom after market ones as a replacement part fix.
It would be a must for every car with an original cap that leaks for those who are on a limited budget.
Let the machine chuck out 50 or so and see how they sell.
OR....
he could start making 9b oil caps, like badass3000 used to make before he got too busy.

Fix For Original Strut Covers
Replacements for the rubber strut covers made of Aluminum. They could also be anodized in many colors too or just polished.
That was always a weak spot if someone leaned on them and broke one of the wires then the ECS stopped working.
Plus, they would dress up the engine bay and be functional at the same time.

Dont make it exactly like PRM, make it so it actually fits our cars without having to prop up the hood, remove the AC or bend the line. It can be done of someone wanted. I just think PRM model their bar to fit in right hand drive cars. What you need to do is CNC the shock tower pieces and have it protrude down from the shock tower into the open space in front of the brake fluid reservoir. Then the bar can be attached in the sam place as the PRM bar and arc down to the lower edge of the walls of the strut tower where it is bolted to this overhang. By bolting here, one can remove the bar to work on the motor easily. Use a tapered pin design with a zsus style retaining ring for easy removal. This will also deal with small geometry differences in diff cars. The center can be bolted to the firewall
another piece is an engine damper bracket which can also be tied into the CNC structure of the tower caps to use a generic damper. You can make the additional bracket for the other end of the damper to bolt to the bolts that hold the alternator bracket onto the block or some other spot thats the same between first and 2nd gens

How about trans gears? How about the final drive ring gears so we can switch to the JDM gearing, the USDM 5spd is a 52 tooth, the USDM 6spd is a 57 tooth and the JDM 6spd is a 51 tooth, there's only one source for the JDM gear, and price is 1500 bucks, there use to be a couple sources for 300 bucks and then later, once those ran out, 900 bucks.
How about all the pulleys but made lighter and if all were reduced by, say 10mm, wouldn't it keep the RPM ratio the same so nothing would be under driven, yet, lighter? Also, if done in aluminum, they could be anodized and make things look nicer?
How about an adapter of sorts, to enable bolting up the 6spd transer case to the 5spd trans, this would enable us to use the stronger 5spd, with the stronger xfer case, it's been done, once by one person, who later found, the final drive changes it a little short than the JDM 6spd, and I believe something might have gone wrong because the rear diff wasn't "in sequence" with the the rest...but.....
In my opinion, short gears are funner to drive on a daily driven street car, it makes it more peppy and fun, which is what I'm after...I could care less about going 100mph all the time.....

I'm gonna throw this one out there since the snow/ice is deep here and going from a road that's plowed and clear, to a road that hasn't been scraped much, it's about a foot higher and it's like going up a curb, but, how about some kind of skid plate to protect our oil pan? So do it. Looks easy enough. Simple job for a waterjet machine if your company has one.
edit: looking again at the picture I think this design is flawed. The middle where the large plate breaks into the profiled sections can collapse about 3 inches towards the exhaust pipe. This will cause the plate to collide with the oil pan.
The bent profiles under the TC needs gussets that extend under the oil pan.

Banned from 3SI shouldn't be able to stop you from making a skid plate. Though skidplate kinda came to mind, I was thinking more of a badass indistructable crash bar of sorts, like a square piece of steel from one cross member to the other, basically another crossmember in that section so it would get hit first rather than the pan. That's one area I could care less about weight gain...seriously 25lbs of weight gain or bent pan+spun bearing, which would you choose ha

Here's one that appears would not take a lot on machining and just about everyone wants.
How about a custom aluminum replacement for the fuel pump cover to replace the stock tank cover.
Seems like everyone that does a fuel pump replacement or rewire runs into some kind of problem because the original cover either has rusted through screws or they end up having to cut off the fuel line coming out of the tank or some other related problem.
Maybe something about 1/2" thick with built in threads for AN fittings and mountings for anything internal. Maybe also have a groove on the underside for an "O" ring for complete sealing, etc.
A little thought here and it could turn into a great part that every one will need eventually.

What are you talking about? Wayne made two pump hangers. One has two holes to easily put two supra pumps in. The other just a solid one. I don't think he ever charged that much for a solid one. That is a ridiculous price for a one pump hanger and a pump. Hell I have the prototype in my garage.
i thought he only made the one, dual-hangar. i know he offered it with a kit for a single pump application.
it was a bit pricey; but still acceptable. i paid only "slightly" less for my dual-hangar than the IPS one; and mine didn't include ANY pumps.
total cost for my new fuel tank setup: >$700.

I'm pretty sure he sold the design to them. The link posted was for a signal pump. If you have a dual pump setup the they do cost more.
ok. fair enough. still....i would think that dual-hangars should be all that we really need. if someone wants to run a single, get a dual with only the feed fittings for 1. maybe not everyone thinks the same way i do--but for me, i'd like to have the room to upgrade in the future (if i was running only 1 pump).
I think I've decided that rather than getting messy with mulitple internal pumps I might just go for a nice big pair of external's(voltage regulated)...working out how to design the tank for that is a little more interesting now though.
why not just keep a stock n/a pump in the tank & put the externals in-line? wouldn't that work? i don't think it require rework if it was done that way.
only "redesign" of the tank i've ever wanted to do was to shave the part which protrudes upwards into the spare-tire mount. it's the only part of the body which prevents me from having a "deeper" trunk. :)
the externals I'm giving a loving stare to would probably suck a golf ball through a hose pipe ;)
I'm also keen to find some sort of tank design that allows the car to keep fuel usefully close to the pickup around a track :)
