View Full Version : The 2011 STM Stealth Build Has Begun... Carnage Inside

Still not completely sure which way im going to take the car in for a turbo setup, but for sure its gonna be lighter (yes its possible to still be lighter), and its gonna look a lot better.
I think this will be the last season i daily drive this car, hopefully put another 15k+ miles on it this coming season, and then 2012 it goes full race car status, and somewhere in the 2200 pound range im thinking.
Saturday it all began, pulled the car in, washed it, the engine bay, the interior, everything i could reach basically.

Then Monday night the fun began, first to come off was the front bumper
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1334.snc4/162623_1712851709409_1481643354_31805534_6530744_n .jpg
then the front mount
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1357.snc4/162975_1712851829412_1481643354_31805535_5572702_n .jpg
then the piping and wiring started coming out
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1354.snc4/162664_1713421843662_1481643354_31807230_1511387_n .jpg
and then tuesday the front end was retired of its duty :pirate:
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs213.ash2/47625_1718300165617_1481643354_31818407_6436285_n. jpg
oops 54 pounds just fell off the car.
Right now its sitting there like this waiting for me to loosen more bolts later tonight

Played with it for a few minutes tonight.
Pulled some small parts, cleaned things up a bit, and starting making some plans.
First thing of is the rear bumper, cant wait to de-badge it and repaint it.

Also set the front bumper back on just to see how much space it has now, i think i could fit another engine in there now ;)

I will be spending some time on it tomorrow and Saturday. Hopefully get the entire harness out of the car, pull out everything in the interior, and find more stuff to pull out.

Dang guy... 2200 lb race weight is pretty sick. I have been racking my brain as to how you pulled 1.4X 60's on Street tires. I can get down into the 1.8's and thats about it. Well I dont have a brace anyway so im not really trying all out, but I dont see me cutting off .4 seconds.
I'm curious to see some reallly detailing pics of all the work your doing.

Was the 1.4 with street tires? I thought he had hoosier QTP's. Which I know can be DOT rated but I wouldn't call them street tires.

No I wouldn't count QTP's as street tires either, but that would explain the 1.4's. I thought he drove to the track, ran those times, and drove home again, no changes at all. Im sure he'll chime in and give an answer when he sees this.

Yes I drove to the track everytime, and drove home, sometimes i drove there on the slicks :) other times i just drove there on street tires, with a jack and slicks in the car.
Anyways worked on the car a bit more tonight. Engine bay is almost completely stripped, engine harness is out of the car.
Tomorrow i want to get the gas tank out, and start working on ideas for the cell, and fuel system.

Got in early this morning and took out some more stuff, and cleaned and organized all the parts.
Its pretty cool when you can fit most of your engine bay into a couple little boxes.

Also got the gas tank out and weighed.
Fuel Tank = 36 pounds empty
1/4+ tank of gas = 50+ pounds at the track
Hoping for the new cell+gas to weigh 20lbs at the track.

Wow, impressed.
I think halting that daily driver duty would be a good idea. I wonder how the strength of the unibody is compromised by removing the second layer of floorboards/tunnel. Perhaps it's minimal, I don't know. But I've got to believe a wreck wouldn't be any kinder on your body.

What piece are you talking about?
Amphiron - We will see how money is come spring time. My first things will just be to get the engine bay painted and back together and get the turbo/turbos on and running so i can drive the car. Then if i have money for a driveshaft and brakes i will do those things.
TonyM - I am not worried about the structure at all. Dont forget the car will be getting a roll cage so it will be pretty solid, i am deff driving the hell out of it this year. I think its goinna be a very fun car this year.

Thanks for the reminder - the cage will certainly make more rigid than it was before.
Good luck, I'm interested to see all the weight you're going to lipo off that thing.
precisely what it sounds like. the rear bumper mounts at the corners. these are situated directly beneath the r/t lights. they are specific to the r/t rears, 3kgt's have a different height piece welded on there--due to the different bumper height. these corner pieces are not necessary for mounting the rear bumper, as the center piece has more than enough bolts to hold the bumper securely in place.

This year im just hoping for low 25xx range with the cage in it. If its lighter i will be even happier with it, but with heat, steering, wipers ect im not expecting much less then that this year.

You should ditch the stock seats (if you haven't already) and put some Evo 8/9 recaros in there...they're something like 25lb as opposed to the vr4 seats at like 80lb. That's what I plan to do to mine to save a good amount of weight ;)

going Nelson style :p (sorry had to say it :p :p )
His car is light to, so nothing wrong with that.
As far as the wiring i think im going to move both fuseboxes to the center and redo it all. Extend each plug one by one to where in needs to be so the is no extra wiring, there will be almost nothing from the engine bay (at least thats the goal), and there will be more space where my feet were so i dont have to worry about stepping on the fusebox when i get in the car.
Work should start on that in a few weeks once i paint the engine bay and set the engine back in.

Here ya go :)
I broke my last spot weld bit last week so i didnt get to do much until last night when the new ones came in. Drilled out the last 2 seat brackets and started attacking the tunnel. Its hard to tell from the picks, but theres a LOT of welds on this thing, it wasnt easy.
However its done and im happy with the results, a little over 20 more pounds out of the car, and i think it looks a lot cleaner now, theres a few holes to fill, then its time to mock up the seat and start the cage.
On to the pictures, turn away now if you dont like drilling into cars :P
The main piece was 14.6 pounds.

I made custom seat brackets that put my aftermarket seats as low as possible on stock mounts and my head still touches alittle bit. I have to recline the seat back some so it doesnt touch and theirs no way im getting a helmet on right now..

Yeah, thats exactly why i cut them out, i might weld the passenger ones in again, but on my side i like to sit so close to the steering wheel that my head touches the roof with no headliner in the car. When i put a helmet on i have to squish down a little and stick my head over to the sunroof area where it raise up a little :(
The seat should be a good 2 inches lower this way which will be great for headroom because the Kirkey is short as it is.
Heres what i just did, found a few things that need to be changed, the clutch pedal setup is one of the big ones.

Looking good.
eviscerate the roof. cut out all of the inside of it until you reach the a-pillars, windshield support, and hatch support. then make a CF replacement for it. :)
are the side windows lexan? are they fixed in place? why do you still have plastic on the inside of the doors? if the windows are fixed, you can probably save some weight by shaving the inside door panel off & welding a tube or two in place of them.

you are a brave man cutting out the dash bar. :eek4: my cage guy asked if i wanted mine gone but i wanted it for the extra body stiffness.
are you going to add gussets to the a-pillar at least? otherwise the body flex might crack the windshield...
ya I'd go with that

now thats's just a waste of time. cut out the inner door panel completely and use a tether pull to open the door. you'd lose 200% more weight compared to the holes and it'll be faster to do.

Exactly, theres some spots where that could help, but on a door its pointless. Im going to leave just enough in 2 spots so i can still bolt the window in place, but im just going to cut out the inner skin, the door bars are already cut out anyways, i just havent done it yet, maybe thats wht i will do tonight?

People have done sub 1.6s in stock weight with street tires. Just look at Ray P or Jack T runs. Great driver mod is just as important as the mods

just curious, do you have pics of the door bar removal? I thought that it was too close to the outer skin to cut without going all the way thru
Its actually quite easy to remove, i used a cut off wheel, a hack saw blade, and a spot weld drill bit.
First thing is using a hacksaw blade slide it down between the door bar and the door skin, and keep the blade pulled towards the bar and cut through the spots of rubber the "attach" the bar to the skin. They cut very easy.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs009.ash2/33812_1744708585811_1481643354_31870041_859522_n.j pg
Then with the cut off wheel cut through the bar slowly out towards one end of the bar, the biggest thing is make sure you stay straight, otherwise the wheel can explode and leave a nice dent in the skin. You dont have to go all the way through, just get close as possible. Then go to the other end of it and do the same.
Once both ends are mostly cut take a set of large pliers or vice grip and twist the bar back and forth until the last little bit breaks.
Then you are left with the two ends that are spot welded in at the ends of the door.
There are 4 spot weld on each end, and if you have a spot weld bit, it makes it very painless, im so glad i bought one. Just drill out the 4 and wiggle the piece out of there.

hahaha well yes yes...I meant breaking the 8s record! :P
This has been discussed in other threads, chances are no records will be broken this year, im not really doing anything thats been done before, just building the car how i want it to be. Im not after anything in particular this year just going fast! That is unless i can get a few sponsors on board to put together an engine and go for 8's ;)
I dont see an issue getting a 9 second pass this year, but thats about. the stock cast crank motor probably wont make it anywhere close to an 8 second pass before it explodes. Im hoping for somewhere around 500hp to start with, see how the motor takes it, and have some fun with the car this year.
Then like i said, the car will become a drag only car, should weigh around 2200 pounds maybe less if i think of more stuff i can do by then. Also will have a motor capable of holding some serious power, and go for some really serious times.

LOL, what car Err, I love it! Can you imagine dropping nearly another 1000lbs on your car :D. Hold on to your hat!
Keep it comin Austin!
not to "naysay" but dropping more than 1 ton of weight is practically impossible; especially if he's going to keep it "Race legal" with a roll cage, etc. that's nearly 400 lbs BEYOND his projected goal of 2200. i just don't see that happening. there wouldn't be much of a car left. no floor, no frame. it would practically be a body over a tube chassis; ala funny-car.
2200-2500 is VERY respectable for an AWD car. well below the curb weights of other AWD supercars.

Havent gotten a ton done on it, been working with the wire harness when i have time and getting that sorted out.
So far I have a little over 6 more pounds out of the harness, its alsmost time to mount it and shorten up a lot of it. I will be mounting them right next to each other so that all the wires that connect the two boxes together can be as short as possible, and everything else will also only be as long as needed, instead of having 4 feet of wire to go 2 feet away.
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1395.snc4/164701_1767561557121_1481643354_31922318_6424285_n .jpg

which will be added to last years pile i fogret exactly but it was around 40 pounds
http://l29.sphotos.l3.fbcdn.net/hphotos-l3-ash1/hs441.ash1/24329_1407772442618_1481643354_31069178_6763468_n. jpg
This is my next set of wires to trace and probably pull, I am fairly certain i dont need any of these wires, and all the relays already have 1 wire cut so they arent doing anything anymore anyways.

I dont see why not, i know that some have a small hole left when you grind off the letters, it was a casting flaw.I believe its the mitsu ones under the mitsu emblem, but its easily fixed. Im very happy with the results, it took about 15 mins to shave and sand, well worth it.

Heres the latest, i cut up the plates friday night, and after work on saturday i bent up the tube. I have to say, im very happy with how it turned out so far being my first time bending tube. It will be trimmed back a little bit but this is the basic shape of the main tube. The whole front end will bolt on/off for easy access when the motor explodes :p
From this main tube everything else will be supported, front motor mount and probably a brace to the subframe. Also the supports for the headlights, oil cooler, radiator, front mount, ect...

Any pics from above, Austin? You cut a crap load out. I thought you were only cutting out a little bit? You took the buckets too :noshen:

You may want to cover the front oil return just to keep debris out of there. Nice job making symmetrical bends.

I havent posted anything in a while, but things are moving forward still. I got a bit done last week, and a lot more yesterday.
Started off by washing it again, it was looking a little sad after sitting there all winter with everything thats been done to it.

Spent some time shaving the new stock intake manifold, still got to do the runners, but the top is ready for a sick STM badge.

Next up was welding the plates to the frame so i could finish making the front tube.

Also got to work on welding up all the holes i wont be needing, i've done a tone so far, and i think im only about halfway. Its getting there though, and it will be worth it in the end.

Also spent some more time on the main tube, got the crossmember built in, as well as a secondary tranny mount to help stiffen it all up.
Oh ya the entire front end so far is 5.95 pounds, im very excited about that.

Are you planning on doing anything to lighten the headlight stuff?
i think he was wanting a set of lat42's. although at this point, i'm not sure why you wouldn't just go with the nascar look.

Yes. This is not my car, I just posted the pic on my facebook. Its Corys 2g eclipse , broke the rear end right out of the car on the launch.
My car is far from colpetion, and may not even see the track till next year im thinking. Considering a repaint and doing a whole lot to it at once.

That diff looks similar. Are they the same?

my guess? yes.
given how many similarities there are between the awd atx's on both--it wouldn't surprise me in the least....although there could be small, cosmetic differences.

The DSM rear is also a limited slip viscous unit. Not the same as OEM TT 3/S. Maybe the same as the AWD non turbo models floating around that share the same parts with DSM trans.
Never seen a DSM rear end blow out, only seen the transmissions pop.

Last year at Pinks All Out between 5 dsms we blew 1 engine, 2 transmissions, broke 4 axles, had one electrical failure, and blew a t-case. They break easy...

The DSM 3 bolt rear end is pretty easy to pop. Everyone I know has upgraded to, or will be upgrading to the 4 bolt rear.

So the front bumper is only held on by the ~3 fasteners in each head light bucket and the ~3 on each fender?

well then it wouldn't be the same as a 3/s non-turbo either; because afaik, the non-turbos all had the 6-speed rear end. mine came out of a 96 vr4.
