View Full Version : What is your best MOD?

Hey guys,

On the other "site" we had "What MOD do you regret doing?". This was very helpful for many members on what not to get but how about we look towards the positives and start this new site on the right foot :).

So my question to you is what MOD is your best and why?

I will start,

My best MOD so far has to be my Tein Coilovers and Tanabe Exhaust Concept G-Blue (Turbo-back) :). I am still in BPU mode.

Best on this car is DR750's. I would have normally said BBK and water/meth second, but those turbos are so awesome, it's amazing.

best mod is hard to decide they all kind of contribute to each other. Putting in the 13T turbo's was obviously the biggest difference of anything. Gutting the MAF was kinda cool because it was free and the spool up was obviously different, even though tuning was a bit of a pain. Electric cut out was pretty awesome since it was easy to prove and see 40 horses on the dyno with it opened vs. closed. I guess I hope its Jackhammers timing gears since I've worked all weekend putting them on.

If I could have a $ each time I've been asked! lol

I dunno, I'm going on a dyno in October. Never ran them no meth, so I have no idea. Meth sould be use on almost every street car set-up IMO.

My best mod was the driver mod. A few years ago I took a professional instructional course through Faast Driving School. Really opened my eyes to how bad my driving habits were and helped me to understand actual racing lines. Best mod I've ever done dollar for dollar as I cut nearly 5 seconds off my track times and has made me a better driver in every area.

On my 3000gt I loved going from auto to 5 speed awd tranny on my FWDTT. 17g turbos made the biggest difference in horsepower. And on my DSM e85 and dsmlink are the best 2 mods I have ever done on ANY car.

I'm thinking of saving up some more and buying the 750's. I've been planning on the 19t's but you talk so highly of them I'm really considering getting some.

What is your current setup? I am planning on getting a tuned once I purchased all my parts needed for a turbo upgrade.

at the time i was all about the 'bang for the buck' value so i was just a stock 1st gen motor, 13T's, 550 inj, hotwired walbro, dejon blow through, MAFT / LS6 MAF, FMIC, open stock dp. i had lots of other misc. crap but those were my main mods. i tuned my car the best i could in my driveway (wasnt redg or insured at the time) for idle and WOT conditions but ill always remember ray laughing about how little tq my car made when he drove it around the parking lot to the dyno. i made 280awhp at 11psi on my first full run but after ray fixed a few issues that i didnt even know i had the car went to 418awhp and 408awtq @18 psi. the car had more left in it but i had no idea about the history of the motor so ray thought it would be good to just leave the car at 18psi.

i want to go back soon with my forged 8.5:1 short block, open ips 3" downpipe, apexi neo, HKS EVC, and cam gears. hopefully with the MAFT + Neo + HKS EVC ray can dial in the car at a higher psi. ive always had two goals. build a fun car on a very tight budget and also break Canenac's 13T record of ~470 awhp. if only they sold E85 out here lol.

oh yea i almost forgot, i DID install an IPS A/C delete kit before i got dyno tuned the first time. im not sure if deleting the A/C was the difference between high 3XX's and 418 awhp but im sure it prob helped out a little bit. i did it mostly to free up room under the hood though. its sooooo nice having more room under my VR4's hood than my NA RT's lol

edit:

Probably my stillen downpipe. It gave me the most noticeable power in my bpu setup along with a nice deep sound.
honestly was the dp worth it? ive been putting off installing mine because i didnt think it would really make a noticeable difference...

Hard to decide for me. When it was still in the car I loved the Quaife. I really need to get that back in. I love my coilovers. Best horsepower to dollar ratio mod was the test pipe.

I think the best mod for me right now would be the ability to park the Stealth and get a daily driver mod

The downpipe makes a huge difference for a bolt on mod as long as you are catless/gutted cats. You will notice quicker spool and much better top end.

Did one hit with 13Ts, S/steel manifold, precat elims, EK2 downpipe, no cat and HKS superdragger... difference was somewhat noticable in the mid-range!

Very close second was the AP BBK - massive difference and feel compaired to stock!

My Cadillac Opulent Tuscany leather hides are my favorite non-go-fast mod.

I got mine from discount tire with my employee discount, bringing my total down to about 425. Its easy to setup and use. Running 14.5psi vs. 9psi on 1G TT's will net a very noticeable difference.

Ive seen a completely stock VR4 dynoed at around 200awhp. All the owner did was drop the factory exhaust and install a 3" downpipe (open dp), and netted over 240awhp. Ill try to find the dyno... it was a pretty old thread on 3si. Not to mention the better spool that comes with all the power.

these two upgrades are definitely worth it if your looking to spend a small amount of money on a lot of hp. a manual boost controller can be as cheap as 15 bucks (even less if you make it yourself). Heres a good deal for a downpipe/test pipe combo from IPS (Jeff from IPS is a great guy, and the customer service there is awesome!)

EDIT: here's a comparison link, its actually a test of IPS's cutout downpipe, which is the same as having the exhaust off after the downpipe.

Well my '98VR4 is pretty much stock & I've only done two major mod's : the one that is the "BEST" that I have done was taking out the stock non-ecs suspension and replacing it with new '95 Stock ECS Struts + Tein H-Techs + a Custom ECS Controller I built to control it all. It made a huge difference in handling and it's tunable from the cockpit. Now if I could just do the "driver Mod" like J. Fast did - I'd be all set. :)

Best, most reliable thing I had done was basic BPU...intake, boost controller, exhaust. Was pulling 103+ trap speeds in an otherwise stock car. Of course, things started breaking after going beyond that:rolleyes:

the BEST thing I recommend anyone do after buying a used car is to immediately refresh EVERYTHING... Lesson I learned the hard way.

May I ask why +30mm over +38mm? Had you considered 18s? I want to swap out my stockers, and figured if I was spending the money, I should go to 18s, especially since some styles don't have 17x8.5. Did you stay with 17s for ride comfort, tire cost, looks, torque, etc? Thanks.

+38 mm was not recommended by 5Zigen for our application, and indeed the +30mm fit perfect. I choosed to stay 17'' cause at that time I wanted to stay around the OEM sizes (in fact I would have kept the ugly stock wheels if they were not so heavy for sleeper look) and I had stock suspension at that time, so 18'' would have been more 'tractor' style. If I had to do it again, I would maybe consider 18'' or 17'' wider to run 275/40.

I have 2 VR4s.

On the FL3S famous Whitie, a 96 VR4, my best mod is likely my 19T turbos. Haven't had a chance to tune it yet, but the other day I accidentally boosted more than I had planned, and the kick in the pants was awesome. Good news is there was no knock. Can't wait to tune it and see what power I get out of them.

On my other just purchased 92 pearl white w/ porno red interior VR4 named Falcor, the best mod so far was buying it from the guy who was letting it sit in a parking lot for over a year doing nothing to it. I call the mod, the giving it a future mod. Can't wait to restore it and convert it to an auto AWD. My goal is for 300-350 hp with it, so nothing too drastic.

I have a new favorite! Just installed the Translab shift kit in the ATX... Hands down best mod so far! Night and day difference, and no more missing OD!!
