View Full Version : GZP Rear Diffusers!

Emilie@GZP
12-03-2010, 04:13 PM
We are now offering a bolt-on rear diffuser for the 3000GT and Stealth. It is NOT a universal rear diffuser, it is fitted to the dimensions of the 3/S. They are available in CF and FRP.

Pricing is as follows:

FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) - $550
CF (carbon fiber) - $700

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d111/3Scar/GZP%20Diffuser/IMG_4580.jpg

It has been tested on a slammed 97 VR4 (tucked wheels), with minimal clearance issues on every-day driving.

(We have not tested the install on a 1g 3000GT rear bumper, or a stealth)

It butts right up against the gas tank, and extends all the way back.

There will be some cutting and grinding required (you need to cut the "lip" off the rear bumper, and some trimming to the sides of the diffuser if you wish to retain your rear tow hooks).

We will supply all of the mounting brackets and hardware.

Here are some installlation pictures. The rear diffuser was originally installed on a yellow 97 SL that we converted to AWD and Twin Turbo, and we just transferred it to our customers new 97 VR4 (hence the scratches on the diffuser).

Anyway, onto the pictures/install:

1) Cut off the "lip" on the rear bumper

2) Line up the diffuser for bracket install.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d111/3Scar/GZP%20Diffuser/IMG_4536.jpg

3) The diffuser is pre-drilled for mounting holes for the brackets, so, you will need to line the brackets up with the holes, and mark the rear crash bar accordingly. We used a marker to outline the bracket to make it easier. We did not pre-drill the brackets because every car is different.

4) Remove the rear diffuser, and mount the brackets. Use the self tapping bolts to secure the brackets to the crash bar

5) Mount Rear Diffuser to brackets.

AHHHh

DO want.

My question, how much does it weigh?

Emilie@GZP

8.5lbs with all of the brackets.

We have plenty R/T's here to test them on. Next test car is a 1G 3kgt though... then to the stealth. I'm not sure if I even want to try to test fit it on a 2G stealth since the bumper pretty much has one already.

FeaRpb
12-03-2010, 05:14 PM
Yeah but that would defeat the purpose of removing exhaust for weigh reduction, along with almost everything else the car can have removed but still function lol. I would add the diffuser, it looks amazing and the weight doesn't bother me.

Its something for me to ponder on.

sorry this is not the best pic. This is from when we installed it on this customers previous car, the first time.

I will have better pictures in a week or so, once we have the rest of this customers engine build completed, and the car is off the lift :)

Emilie@GZP
12-04-2010, 02:08 PM
you would need to cut the center of the stock rear bumper (stock rear diffuser), and I don't know how well that would look, in all honesty. But I don't see why you couldn't use this diffuser with a 2g stealth rear bumper.

Yea. I would love to make it extend from side to side but there are way too many different sized exhausts we would have to cater to. It was best for us to stick with this size as to not get fitment complaints.

Do you have to cut the bumper? And has this been driven at all to see if it helps? I know in theory they are, but I am just asking.

You have to cut the "lip" off the stock rear bumper..

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d111/3Scar/yellow94vr4.jpg

This has been installed on a daily driven car, not raced at all. Rear diffusers help straighten the airflow under the car, we have no means of testing exactly how much it helps, but it's a proven design.

very nice work, guys (and gal). i tend to agree on the futility of 2g stealth testing. probably easier to just paint the center section on the stock bumper black, rather than trying to put this on there. looks really good. probably the best offering i've seen for a diffuser yet. it'll probably look even better on a 1st gen, due to the design of the bumper. and of course, you'd NEED a 99 garnish.

any plans to offer more FRP parts? i'm still trying to find a reputable source for a set of pureform wing pillars.

I’m still a little undecided about this. At first I thought it hung down too far, I wanted something that was tucked under a bit more but seeing it on the ground it’s kind of growing on me a bit more. I’ll be looking forward to seeing more pics at different angles, hopefully painted.

I'm about 50% with you on that one, if I do end up getting one I think I'll make some inserts to close the gap on the sides of the diffuser and mold them over the exhast tips between the gap and back down to the bottom edges of the bumper. Shouldn't be too hard, and would look pretty slick.

The fitment would be the same between the CF and FG.

We can fab up brackets for those who do not have a rear crash bar.

It's on a black car, so, our customer is planning on keeping it the black color it is. Personally, I prefer a diffuser in black, I think it just looks more aggressive that way. I can try to photoshop it a color (along with the car) if you'd like, once we get the car outside for a full shoot. I can't make any promises on the quality of the photoshop though :p

We just used some OEM black colored bolts to get it mounted to the brackets. We're looking into some better looking bolts right now. Probably a black colored bolt with a tapered head to countersink into the holes for a flush mount.

Agreed. On my previous car, which was a stealth, the spoiler was intentionally installed further back, and it gave the car a completely different look. It's a modification I may even have done on this car just because I'm quite fond of the stock spoiler on these cars.

Wow, looks great! But is there any way that the diffuser can be produced with sidewalls so that you can't see the mounting brackets and stuff from the side? It just looks incomplete because of the large openings that exist

Emilie@GZP
03-13-2011, 04:04 PM
This is the final design. Most exhausts will hide it for the most part, and it is not reall noticeable from a normal standing position :)

what are the chances to fit this to a 1g bumper? is there a similar body line to cut on a 1g bumper?

Ya, what he said! I'd buy one in a heart beat in carbon if it had side walls and went over and to the outside of the exhaust.
But it still looks good. I love all the new stuff coming out for our platform.

Then we would need to make multiple designs to account for all of the exhaust options that are available for these cars. The sides are not very noticeable from a regular standpoint or from just walking around the car and with the stock tow hooks, there is no way around it.

I am not fond of the squareness of the top of it, and the way it sticks out. Sorta reminds me of a diaper or something. All of the lines on these cars are smooth and rounded.

It just looks too boxy to me...

IMO, which has been out of the norm before...

Hans@GZP
03-13-2011, 07:15 PM
We can't box in the sides. You wouldn't be able to bolt it on with them closed in.

Hans@GZP

Air shouldn't get in through the sides. Even if it does, that is what the vents are for.

What about making fiberglass covers for the side that can be mounted after it is installed and the buyer can dremel it to fit their exhaust or not use it at all.

Once the customer starts paying us again, it's getting some coilovers and a CF 99 vr4 wing. But, at this rate, we may own the car again before that happens

Mount brackets, weld nuts onto brackets, line up, bolt on :)

We will see if powder coating the brackets helps a bit, and we will see if there is something we can add to the sides to close it up after it is installed.

Lancelot_GT
03-15-2011, 08:47 PM
Even if it's a powdercoated black mesh or something that can be mounted to the side, just something to make it look more complete. Right now it just looks sort of tacked on. In no way am I implying that it looks tacky though, don't take it the wrong way

Emilie@GZP

To the OP, diffuser looks cool until I saw it mounted UNDER the 2nd Gen t-bar. IMHO, the T-bar needs cut out like GZP did and then put in the diffuser. I like the way the GZP diffuser mounts, but, again IMHO, it needs one more diffuser channel, the ones they have seem too wide. Also, as a single shot owner, I'd like to see it go all the way to the right.

I am the OP, I think you replied to this thread by accident, instead of the other diffuser thread...

Any wider, and you can't have tow hooks. It would be WAY too expensive, and would look very odd to extend it completely to one side to accommodate a single exhaust...

Hey, has there been any updates to this? Or pics? :p

I might grab one of these this summer, if you're still making them of course. I just haven't decided if I want to make any changes to the rear or not, but I think it will go much better once I do my front end modifications.

Not really much to update, and we don't have any more pictures. It's looking like we will be getting my spyder to the body guy soon, once that car is done, I will have more pictures with the rear diffuser.
