I test drove one with the intention of buying it to autocross. or perhaps doing the spec miata series. I think they are neat little cars

Had a 91 a few years back. That was one of the coolest cars i've owned.

DJ took me for a ride in a supercharged one a few weeks ago.
Fun ride. I've been toying with the idea of getting one for autox.
He says you can beat them to death and they don't break.

They are non interference so they pretty much are unbreakable besides bearing failure or something like that

I had one that I sold this past summer. I did a little autocross with it. Really fun car.

Sorry guys, just had to

Lol. Hey I have been beat by plenty of Miatas at the race track. They are neat, I drove a 99 (99's had a LSD) and it was pretty fun, I just couldnt believe how short the gears were.... you could start off in 3rd gear from a stop no problem. 1st gear was like 25 mph, I never seen such short gears in a car.

i would like to get one, they are so small, it seems like it would be really fun to just toss around and beat on.

used to have an s2000 and really loved it so my expectations on the miata were a bit high.

driven a couple miatas since and i was highly dissapointed. honestly felt they were slow, sloppy, and cramped in comparison.

ive driven a 90, 91, and 99

If I fit in one, I'd love to drive one... I can't even fit in a new hardtop Miata, the older ones I sorta fit, but it's way too tight.

Was in my friends and it was decent. I mean small + rear wheel drive + cheap + takes a hell of a beating is a winning combo.

I agree with VR4 that id probably spend the extra dough on an s2000 though.

I can't drive a miata but my friend kicks ass with his on redline time attack. That little thing was fast as hell.

Never seen that car, though, hmm. I been racing there for 6 years.

I love mine. Got it for $450. It's a 91, 1.6L but has the VLSD.

I autoX'd an S2000 before running my Miata. Of course, I have a Bilstein coilover setup, but the Miata felt way more precise than the S2k, with way better brakes. But it's apples to oranges comparing a bone stock car to a modded one. I'd love an S2k for a weekend car, but you can't buy one for $450. My Miata is a total shitbox and it's a complete blast.

Toying with the idea of tossing an ebay 16G on it. For ~$1k you can have 200-250whp and see low 12's. LOL!

Atrosity
11-24-2010, 11:27 AM
Hahahaa lawdogg that would be legit man, you got a picture of said shitboxx? Miatas are probably one of the cars that is the most best bang for buck for autocross/road course

My friend put some rediculously low number into his miata like 15k or something like that I dont know into his miata compared to the other cars and this thing tears up the redline time attack road racing, it actually won this event when i saw it.

I think I'd go for the KL swap, hang a couple 9B's on it for nothing but the fab costs, and have a solid 350hp :D

Damn that's nice! I recognize that car. The trick with Miatas is the ECU, though ... you pretty much have to run a standlone or something I guess. Not totally sure how it works, but man it'd be nice if you could just swap in a DSM harness & ECU lol. But yeah ebay has pre-fabbed manifolds and exhausts for the 16G to put on the 1.6L and it's sooo tempting.

Anyway here is mine:

4g63 swap? :p Did you ever post pics of how you have your suspension set up?

lawdogg
11-24-2010, 04:09 PM
lol well I do have a spare 6G72 in my garage ... haha

Basically with the suspension I put in some custom bump stops, removed the OEM bilstein spring perch, and had new sleeve seat clip grooves machined in the rears so I could lower the back some more. As it sits in the pic I still have 1-2 inches I could drop it if I wanted. Might get some stiffer springs and slam it. Right now the rates are around 450F / 350R and I'd like to go 150% as stiff - they're dual A arm not macpherson so the effective spring rate is actually some degree lower than the spring's K.

The Miata is awesome just to beat on. The exhaust leaks and it's slow as crap in a straight line ... but I love it. Keep posting your Miatas guys lol

Oh and I've only been hit on by one .. no, two dudes because of it LOLOL

I test drove a black 92 miata before I bought my TT

OMG... the owner took me for a spin in it before I was supposed to drive it. In the ad on craigslist, he said it was a low 12 second extremely modified car... It was... Fuel injected 302 with a vortech supercharger... He punched it at like 40mph and it was all over the damn road... After that I was like not a chance am I Gunna buy this thing... I'll be dead...
He wanted 10 for it... I have pics somewhere I think...

I don't know how they do it but Miata's our easily the loudest cars on the track. I cringe every time I have to pass one because I know my ears will be bleeding by the time I complete it.

For $450 I can see how that'd be a fun pickup. For a "gay" car that looks pretty sweet Ryan.

Miata's are awesome. I prefer mine with 280hp (supercharged) and the windshield cut off.

I used to really like Miatas. Drove a 91 way back when, a 97, and a 2003. They were/are a great handling little car... HOWEVER... They haven't updated the horsepower/handling much at all in the past 20 years. When I got my Boxster S, it made every Miata I'd driven feel slow and stupid. They really need to do a factory V6 option, otherwise, I'm not interested anymore. Bang for the buck is definitely there, but at my age, I can afford a bit more than to just be concerned with that. I'd rather have a more powerful car from the start, without having to mod it.

Oh hai, guyz!: :hellothere:

No pics at the moment, but I've got a bone stock silver/black '99 Miata. I love driving it more than my DR650 Stealth! :awesome: Endless amounts of top-down fun carving the country back roads out here. The Stealth just sits in the garage collecting dust these days so it will be gone next month. My girlfriend has been DD'ing the Miata lately, so I'm really considering picking up another to turbo and put a hardtop on.

Aah I see how it is. You know, the Miata is more popular with women than my VR-4 ever was. My g/f likes the miatard more than my stealth. :(

I need more power in mine. Bad. Like I said I am debating between turbo setups. I don't want to have to build the engine, and the 1.6's can only handle ~250whp safely. But then, in these little things, 250whp is deep 12's, and that would be a blast. At least you have another .2L in yours lol

I bought a Miata the other week to DD and AutoX. 140k on the clock, came with ALL the maintenance records since the car had 0 miles, a new top a week before I bought it, some ugly ass 17" rims with decent tires I sold for $400, stock rims and tires with good tread, a roll bar, and some other good stuff. Overall cost me $2500.

A couple of my friends made fun of me for it because it's "gay", but they salivate to drive in it whenever we go anywhere, and bitches love them. 35MPG combined is also awesome. Not sure what people are complaining about not fitting in them for though - unless you're Yao Ming I can't see an issue. I'm 6'+ and fit with room to spare.

DocWalt
04-24-2011, 09:08 PM
I can't fit with the top up, I'm 6'4"+ I barely fit in a VR4 with the seat all the way back... The newer Miatas are even worse for me to fit in because of the hardtops.

WHaaa??!? I have a 1.6L and it gets 25mpg combined, tops. Then again a my timing belt might be off a tooth lol ... what year is yours?

HellBringer
04-25-2011, 01:47 PM
My 1.8 gets an honest 30-32MPG on average. The worst we've ever seen was 27 and that included about 90 miles worth of WFO driving.

Mine's a 92 1.6L, but I also don't drive it hard at all. My last trip was 328 miles, and my receipt said 9.5~ gallons. Closer to 34MPG after rounding off but still - and I'm close to an oil change and I just ordered new plugs and wires, so I bet I could squeeze a little more out after I do that this weekend. This was about half and half city and highway.

Highway driving is 80miles one way @80MPH (4k RPMish), same thing the way back. City driving I shift about 3k.

lawdogg
04-25-2011, 06:25 PM
Son of a ***. Might as well check my timing when I get back. Also, Abram I know yours doesn't have an adjustable CAS but Trevor have you messed with yours at all? I haven't looked at mine yet, and considering the army of dumbasses who I suspect owned it in the past, I probably should.

Frostedbutts
04-25-2011, 06:32 PM
Yeah, somethings definitely not right. I haven't messed with the CAS at all, and it's only had to owners that were both 50+ before me, so I don't think they did either. Are your brakes dragging maybe?

Also, I just changed my plugs and it makes me hate my 3000GT so bad.

lawdogg
04-25-2011, 11:05 PM
Yeah doing anything on this thing has made me hate working on the stealth, lol ... water pump? easy. timing belt? a foot of space to change it. spark plugs? *pop* *pop* *pop* *pop* done. Gay? Maybe. Convenient? Hell yeah.

Brakes might be dragging. When I bought the car I didn't even notice but it had no rear brake pads. LOL. Something might be up with them.

Looks good. Mine came with a K&N as well as the stock airbox - I was thinking about swapping the stock box back in to see if I could tell a difference, but I probably won't ever find that as a justified use of my time. The previous owner said you could tell a lot more at the top end than with the stock airbox, but who knows. I was too disappointed getting to redline without being pushed back into my seat to care.
