MR11883

FHA-0056

I've never seen an FHA plate  What's in it?

Not an MR trans. There is no such thing as an MR Trans. All 5 speeds were the same, regardless of region. All US 6 speeds were the same, and all JDM 6 speeds were the same, regardless if it was an MR or not.

I used to think that too but this one says MR right on the plate so there really is such a thing as an MR trans :D. That's the first time I've seen an actual MR plate instead of a Gxxx plate. Have you actually openened up an MR plated trans before? I've rebuilt several styles of trans and have never, ever, seen an MR plate. Is it possible there's yet another ring gear undiscovered out there?

Interesting... I have also never seen a plate like that. I would still doubt that the tranny is any different than ours, after all this time I think we would have heard of any other gearing types out there. Perhaps some of the MR cars had that stamp added to the regular tranny to let any Mitsu mechanics know that it was an MR geared car with the different rear end.

MR is normally a sign of a mitsu part #. That tranny looks like a remanned 5-spd. (Note the 3 shafts not 4). Is MR11883 in CAPS?

I knew it was a 5 speed, but a 5 speed MR?

Just a part number, only difference i see.

For sure it looks the same but that plates throwin me off since I've never seen any year of 3/Sawd plated with an MR prefix! You think it's a reman plate or something? You have ASA or CAPS?

Off topic:
Rather then sawzawing through everything, why dont these chop shops take the time (maybe even save time) and take things off and sell them as well?
For god sakes the halfshaft is now a 1/4 shaft, and that shift linkage is useless.

Sorry for my stupidity and off topicness but what is the benefit of MR gears, and MR gears are only in 6speeds right? Again, I really know nothing tranny wise about these cars.

MR 6 speed gears were slightly shorter, theres a graph floating around somewhere that shows all of the gear ratios.

lawdogg

'MR' is a misnomer, as far as we know all JDM 6 speeds had different ring & pinion gears within the tranny and used a 5spd rear end. So fittingly we call them 'JDM' gears, not 'MR' gears.

I'm not aware of any difference between USDM & JDM 5 speed gearing though. Did Mitsu even make a 1st gen GTO MR?

Here's an online caps, I posted it before, it probably could use a sticky-ing:

http://www.akadia.ru/_pages/mitsubishi/index.php?st=80&l=bWFya2V0PT1ldXJvfHxjb2RlPT01M1R8fG1vZGVsPT1aMTZB fHxjbGFzcz09TU5HRlI2fHxwbmM9PTIyfHxzdWI9PTAxMHx8YT I9PTkyMDYxfHxpbWc9PTEyMjAxMTAtNTAwMzI3LmpwZw%3D%3D

I think either the plate or CAPS has an error. CAPS number is MR111883.

Hans@GZP

The plate should have an error. Mitsu part numbers are usually 2 letters and 6 numbers. Should be a 25 spline output shaft.

Probably doesn't make any difference but some odd things in the pictures could be due to the possibility that it may have come out of a "Right Hand Drive" vehicle. Just a thought.

Yeah MR is the Mitsu part number prefix, NOT from an MR edition GTO.

The only interesting thing about that trans is the piece attached to the shift linkage. Haven't seen that on a 5sp before.

Austin@STM

^ you mean the counter weight?

I've seen a few like that. I haven't seen any counter weights on 5 speeds that go straight out. Most of them face down on a 90 degree angle.

Part number MR111883 is a replacement for part #: MB936206. Between these 2 part numbers it covers all TT version of the 5 speeds. Nothing special about it from what I can tell. However ASA/CAPS doesn't tell you anything about the gearing. However if it's a replacement for the standard gearbox then we have to assume it's the same gearing.

Hans@GZP
11-19-2010, 11:21 PM
MB811031 is the 18 spline and MB111883 is now all versions of the 25 spline 5 speed.

Hans@GZP
11-19-2010, 11:25 PM
oops, never mind... looks like they added an addendum to the part number for the 18 spline. No more 18 spline from the dealer if I read it right?

GTOJOE
11-19-2010, 11:29 PM
that looks right but mine is in Japanese so I can't tell 100%. But looks like you can't get the 18 anymore.

Ive never seen it  I have 3 5speeds in my garage right now. Maybe its a JDM thing?

Dont think so, there was 500 MR's made on the Z15 platform between 1994 and 1998 as best as I know.
USDM final drive was 3.872 and JDM is 4.154 on the 6 speeds, all the actual ratios on the individual gears should be exactly the same.

GTOJOE

There is such a thing as a 5 speed MR. there just isn't such a thing as 5 speed MR gearing. Also the 5 speed MR was a Z16A not a Z15A.

ZeroAU
11-20-2010, 09:20 AM
That would probably make them some of the last of the 1993's then before they switched over in 1994 with a bit of an overhaul to most things.

I had that same weight on my '93 5-speed- 25 spline TT Stealth
It is now a paperweight.

Thanks Michael-
Cardboard, tapered poker tool & sharpie= no guess work for reassembly. I'll do up separate 'cards' for all the different areas I'm working on. If things are still in question, I write a small note, or diagram with location label. For long bolts, I sink them into the top of a small cardboard box.
I didnt know that weight was oddball at the time I dissassembled the car, but dont recall there being a space issue. I've trimmed it down.
I dig your sig-

6 speeds have different gearing, 5 speeds do not.

^^^ Welp... Thats $700 for a welded vcu then. Only difference between my 5spd in the back yard and the one I'm getting.

What's the plate on the Trans you ordered Ashyone?

Hans@GZP
11-23-2010, 08:25 AM
Yea, just check the number/letter code on the trans. That will tell you if you have the same gear ratio for sure.
