I am looking for a good 18 spline 5sp transmission

I found a TT in running, which the owner says "motor is mainly stock with 158K miles, both turbos work, trans is in good shape just the usually 2nd gear is being a pain, it will go into 2nd gear just fine. You can't slam it in gear though, ii will hit."

Am I correct that this might not be a good choice for a quick swap of my transmission?

This also brings up the question of how do I know I am getting a good tranny when I buy a used pull? I don't want to have a used one bolted back on just to find out I have shifting or other problems.
