So I figured I would catalog my build on this site also.

I just picked up my friends 240sx project for a steal of a price. The car has about 200 miles on the rebuild. But first, a short story.

12/2007- He first purchased the car from a guy in Houston, TX. We got the car home, realized it was running on 3 cylinders, he accelerated his plans for the swap.
http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs168.snc3/19548_298010932217_512987217_3615238_2258005_n.jpg

04/2008- Swap completed by a local shop. We attempted to do it at first but we ran into a few problems, some due to inexperience, some due to lack of tools. 4 days after the swap was complete, the engine overheated and blew a head gasket and cracked a rocker arm. The car was down for months before he finally decided to learn how to fix it. We also find out that the shop did a shitty job on the wiring harness.

Late summer 2008- We finally finished fixing the blown hg. Due to work and lack of motivation it sat for a while. 3 days after this the car jumps timing, apparently we screwed up when putting the cams back in. The car sits till late 2009.

07/2009- I move back from new jersey, kick my friend in the pants. He is debating between doing a rebuild or starting from scratch with a new sr20det. I convince him to go for the rebuild. We drop the block and heads off to the machine shop and have the following installed/done.

Block and head decked/hot tanked
.20 overbore
Port/polish heads
3 angle valve job
Apexi metal HG
ARP head studs
BC 264 cams
BC valves/retainers/springs
Clevite bearings
BC rods
CP 9:1 pistons
Rocker arm stoppers

01/05/2010- Got the engine back from the machine shop. Started putting the accessories on it and getting the car ready to recieve it. Also got a blitz nur spec exhaust.

01/30/2010- Engine is in, car cranks, etc. Everything is golden.

At this point the my friend hears a slight noise in the valve cover, so he lets it sit for a few months because hes not sure what it is. We determine that its probably the lifters with air in them, because its a fresh rebuild and we trust the reliability of the machine shop, but unlike most hydraulic lifters, the sr20 lifters dont bleed off over time, they must be taken out and manually bled. My friend has a newborn, full time job, etc and gets tired of the car. Hes also still paranoid about it after all the stuff he went through (and all the money). He buys a fox body mustang and decides to sell the car. I tell him he better give me first dibs on it. So buy the car, and over the next few months ill iron out all the kinks, get a turbo and fuel w/management, and own face.

Things to do.

1. Take out the lifters and bleed them
2. Install the WB02 gauge that came with the car.
3. Change the brakes and get new tires
4. Buy a new wiring harness
5. Turbo, fuel injectors, tune

Future plans
Wheels and tires (at least 10" on the rear)
Full suspension
Paint and body

yeah, the clear has oxidized a bit from sitting. theres a spot on the hood and a spot on the roof. im probably going to do a cheap rustoleum job on it. not trying to make it a show car, just dont want it to look like crap.

Why the SR20? You should have just kept the KA in there and built AND KA-T it. OH, a few more things.. I live in LA too so shout out if you need help and join our group i just invited you to

What computer you going to throw in? If you go GReddy Emanage, i can tune it out for you.

Not to mention the KA is a truck motor. Not to say you can't do anything with it but the SR is a far better route. Looks like you guys are making great progress.

Yep, as much as i miss my 3s, and as much as i would like a vr4, its just too complex and expensive to upgrade. the 240 should be a high 10 second car after i finish, to get that in a vr4 would take a crap ton of cash.

Thats some luck on all the rebuilds for him, I've been there done that. Almost worse if you don't do the labor yourself and you fork out a TON of cash.
He gave you a good deal? Do you know how much $ he lost into the whole car?
Going to do any body mods before paint?
Looks pretty good man, great mod-list.

tabasco122
09-13-2010, 12:10 AM
he paid 2k for the car originally, then probably 5k for the swap and all the accessories. then another $500 or so for the hg, head bolts, rocker arm, etc. then when it went down again for the rebuild another $1800 in parts and $1300 to the machine shop. plus $800 for the exhaust.

So close to 12k total.

You sticking with the stock T25 or going with something bigger?

tabasco122
09-15-2010, 12:13 AM
the plan is an ecu tune (enthalpy or jwt), 800ish cc injectors, and a gt3071r

AaronVR4
09-15-2010, 10:31 AM
which exhaust manifold you going with for the 30r?
You thinking about an intake manifold as well?
http://enjukuracing.com/isis-intake-manifold-polished-nissan-sr20det-p-8302.html

Supposed to be a copy of the GReddy one.

tabasco122
09-15-2010, 06:48 PM
Yeah, i had planned on using isis stuff. my friend talks to ken pretty often, and he swears by the stuff. to an extent its china ebay stuff, but enjuku personally inspects the product before they sell it, and they usually go through a few revisions before they start selling a product. The car has an isis starter on it and it runs like a champ. The only thing im kinda frustrated about is trying to find a top feed fuel rail that works with that intake mani, because some only work with the stocker. I would rather run 1000CC top feeds than 800cc side feeds and a bump in fuel pressure. I dont want my injectors above 85 IDC.

as far as exhaust mani i was going to stick with the stocker or get the isis tubular. Eventually ill probably get one with an external wastegate and upgrade the turbo even more, but i figure ill do a little bit at a time.

the greddy one that came on the car. Its rated for 400hp but i may do meth also if temps get too high.

So october 2nd is when im taking the car in. Buddy of mine is going to tow it with his car trailer. It runs and drives fine, but i would rather tow it until i can go over everything. Going to have a bbq afterwards, pictures fo sho. Some Z guys are coming also, should have a few nice 300's

Niiceee. I had a 240 for a while and wanted to drop in an sr25. Never did though. These cars are pretty sick. I raced an s13 running 18lbs of boost, and once he hit boost, he fucking flew. Got squirrelly shifting too.

Definitely in for pictures :)

Im glad to see other people are into the 240's. I have one in the garage but waiting to do a vg30dett swap in the car. Since i go to school and in Nov. im going to Mex to visit family i havent really had time to save for the car. I have bought a j30 vlsd and swapped out the back cover to make it fit.

Sorry for thread jack but i already want my 240 up and running. Need to feel boost of my own. O.O

heres pics of my z right before i sold it 2 weeks ago. Its not perfect, but its better than most. 1990 NA with 168k

The good ole 1990 with the nose panel without the Nissan "Hamburger" Badge.

Atzec red... I would have rather have had the 300zx. 240s are cool and great and all but the z32 is more refined. Plus you could have thrown a RB25/26 in that slut.

ralbe- Why do you want to throw a VG30DETT in there? I remember how cramped my engine bay was with my NA Z32. I think the only good thing a VG is good for is going 200-300k miles. :P

Well i found this website where someone did a swap into the 240 and let me say they almost look identical. Space wise. All you have to do is cut up the front subframe, custom make some motor mount brackets, swap over to a j30 oil pan, relocate oil filter and figure out a way how to modify the downpipe so it wont hit the steering column.
Plus the VG will be able to give a little more power in stock form against the sr. Plus is something way different, everyone does rbs, sr, ka-t and ls swaps.

The vg is pretty stout, they just set a record for highest hp with stock heads/block/bottom/turbos. 499rwhp...

i may get another 240 to daily, it needs a bit of work though. i would turbo it once i upgraded the turbo on the built one though. that or do an LSx swap eventually.

That is a crazy build. If i had that kind of funds to be able to afford that and would have this car done.

Yeah my friend told me about someone making that kind of power on stock turbos and stuff. Pretty crazy especially if you could put that power in the 240. Isnt the 240 like around 400 pounds less than the zx? Well once you put the vg you are gonna add some weight to the car, but still should be lighter than the zx.

I was gonna turbo the KA but wasnt too sure how much and what would need to be done. Plus the engine was knocking when i bought it. It was pretty fun those 2 days i drove it. revved it to 5k and drop the clutch. Good ol'e times. It didnt have the power to stay burning out.

you can get a cheapy manifold from enjuku racing for $200. add a turbo and intercooler and you are good to go. the stock bottom can only handle like 6-7psi reliably, so most KA-T setups need a rebuild with forged goodies.

And the NA z32 is about 3200lbs, 240 is about 2600. i think the TTZ is 3400.

there is a guy around here who will take your 240 and 3k and drop a vq35 in there, either from a maxima or a 350z for $1000 more. good NA power.

Nice looking build, I'm partial to the KA myself though the SR has some nice benefits. I have some brand new tension rods for an S13 if you have any need for them. I'm not yet verified here though intend to do so soon or you can message me on Facebook as well.

I had 2 friends that built up 240's one droped a RB20 in his s13 and the other put an SR20 in his s14. when they were done they both said they should have built up the KA. would have been faster and cheaper. Its Nice to have the whole Sylvia build, gives you the nice warm fuzzy feeling, and you have the perfect car for the build. I have not seen a cleaner s13 since the 90's when they were on the lot. Good luck with the build and Man thats a pretty car.

Update time, I went into oreillys and tested the new alt i got on ebay. It tested 15v on the bench, and passed all the tests the machine ran. So tomorrow when i put it back in the car ill need to check a few other things to figure out why its not charging. Also, the pully was a bit loose, so hopefully that was it. I tightened it up with an impact so i think we can rule that out now.

The tensioner comes in monday, more for piece of mid, hopefully it gets rid of the chain rattle.

Still need to wire the wideband up and install it. Going to move the oil press, boost, and water temp gauges to the ac vents, got a nice metal mount for it. Going to keep the wideband in the a frame pod for now.

We had two of the coolant pipes capped off, where they went into the heater core, yesterday one of the caps busted, ejecting all of my coolant. Have to replace that. I think im going to loop the system, it would probably work a bit better.

Also discovered a few minor things i need to take care of, none of them pressing issues.

Cliffs:

To Do List

1. Install alternator and figure out why its not charging.
2. Fix and refill cooling system
3. Install new timing chain tensioner
4. Fix gauges and wire the wideband.
5. Tidy up engine bay
6. ???
7. PROFIT!!!!!

yeah, thats the plan. its a parallel flow system, so the circuit that goes to the heater core just goes to the throttle body and intake mani, i may do a bypass on that also to hopefully lower IAT's a bit. but yeah, the previous owners decision to cap it instead of looping it probably wasnt thebest decision.

I started when i was in highschool. They only require basic knowledge to get the position. A lot of it can be taught on the job. Usually they will make you do simple things like new pc work and handle the counter at first, then once you learn/prove yourself to be proficient at viruses and windows issues, you can do the good stuff. I am an in home agent though, i dont work in the store, ever.

its made by isis. they are a company that partners with enjuku racing. Its basically like refined top quality china knockoffs. Enjuku wont sell stuff unless it has been tested and is up to their standards. They actually have made isis redesign parts before if they werent good enough quality. Ken from enjuku runs isis parts on both his personal car and his race car when they had their racing team.

more fun, maybe. easier? no. the sr20 is a direct swap. i would say that i can probably do the swap in a day or so now. just because i know my way around the car so well. theres no modification needed aside from the wiring harness.

dude, the car looks so busted from the paint, you dont want pics. the sun is horrible on cheap factory paint jobs. when it warms up a bit here ill probably do a roller job on it just for a year or two.

I don't care about the outside on S13's, they're ugly, no offense. Besides, if you saw half of the 240's here you'd be proud of your paint :p Pics of the engine bay man!

lol the engine bay looks kinda bad too. previous owner tried painting the valve cover and failed. plus the wiring harness looks like shit. ill try and take some pics soon. interior is almost perfect though.

updates....

been a while since i updated this, but here goes...

Installed new gauges, got rid of the profec, got an hks wastegate, installed wideband, coilovers, and a few other things. I molded a gauge pod thingy into the right ac vent in the steering column, it came out kinda shitty, but its functional. Had to put everything back together as im going run the dragon saturday, leaving thursday for tennessee.

Nah, the transition is all messed up. I didmt have time to really sand it like I wanted to. Maybe ill have time.for a quick rustoleum job before ng.

guess i should update this. havent done much since NG/BRG until recently. At ng i ran autocross for the first time ever, and sucked ass, i think my fastest time was like either 0:59 or 1:03, i cant remember. drags i ran a 13.7 @103 at 10psi. more important than my et, i was impressed with myself for cutting a 1.8 second 60ft time with an open diff and street tires lol. here are a few of my recent updates, copied from another forum.

Looks like my optima finally shit the bed i think, must be the cooler weather. it was living on borrowed time anyway, i already have another 84 month premium oreilly battery sitting at my friends house luckily

finally getting a vlsd, as soon as i order some subframe bushings. my friend has a busted s13 (it basically a beater) with a diff in it, so we are going to swap subframes temporarily, then we are going to just go through my subframe and replace the bushings, then swap em again so i can still drive my car if i need to if it takes more than a day to do the bushings. also a bit disappointed because the car i was going to steal the z32 brakes from was missing the front calipers. ill still be able to jack the rears, which is the real pain really, ill just have to get some reman fronts from oreilly or something. OT should start coming in starting next check, so ill be able to give my car some lovin. will probably paint the bitch once it starts getting warm again, it will probably be too cold by the time im ready.

yay, step one to no wheel hop, putting them in tomorrow. delrin motor mounts with a solid tranny mount. i managed to get my car on a lift the other day, my motor mounts are almost gone lol. i think ill order some subframe bushings friday, so i can install my vlsd.

well, mounts went in last week. they were really rough at first, but they are starting to break in, and feel a good bit better. overall i like them. the engine doesnt move, shifter is in the right spot again, and it doesnt move under load either. according to what ive read, takes about 150-250 miles for the delrin mounts to break in fully. i have a diff waiting for me at my friends house, just have to order subframe bushings and diff bushing inserts and then that goes in also.

today i took off my spoiler, it was allowing water to get into the hatch, and rusting. had to cut out a good 4x4 square and weld a patch in. first time ever touching a welder, my friend helped, but i did a good bit too. im well aware it looks like shit, but it will be all good once its been grinded and bondo'ed over. still have two smaller areas to cut out and patch, and the rest of the holes to fill. ill probably delete the antenna and rear wiper while im at it, and start sanding the car for paint. anyway, here are the pics.

currently i need to finish fixing the hatch, then hopefully soon i can start fixing the other dents and shit so i can paint it soon. going to be a cheap paint job for now, better one later when i actually have the aero pieces i want on it. Also getting a diff in the next few weeks, subframe bushings, and hopefully getting the turbo/fuel/tune in the beginning of the year after income taxes.

I searched through the thread and couldn't find any info on this, but did you buy that spedo trim with the gauge pod or did you make it? I have an s13 and right now my wideband is mounted using an ebay mount off to the left of my steering wheel, so it sits in the center of my tach.

It looks way better where you have it.

funny story about that, i fiberglassed it, first time touching the stuff, it looks bad up close, but here are some pics of that process.

For the 1st time doing it I think it came out pretty good also. You can always add some putty and smooth it out more later.

Sounds like even more fun! The vlsd is just a normal viscous LSD, right?

Correct, its so easy to get sideways now. Easily the best mod for the car since the engine swap.

So got everything in, i broke my output shaft at the track last weekend, so yesterday i got a used tranny for $125, new clutch, and an aluminum driveshaft. probably didnt need the driveshaft but i would feel better since i dont know the condition of the splines in mine now.

Flat towed my car 2 miles to the hyundai dealership my friend works at. its nice having lift access, especially when you need to do something like swap a transmission. Used another 240 to tow, the KA24DE towed like a champ lol. afterall, its the same engine used in the nissan hardbodies.

Installing new trans, clutch, driveshaft, gt2871R, 810cc injectors, Z32 MAF, ROM tune, and a new pre turbo intake. also have the crap to make my heater and AC work again. it will be weird having AC again...
