I had an idea. I did a little searching. I had another idea.
Let's start with this.
http://www.rwichmann.com/2009/08/26/iphone-controlled-rgb-led-via-arduino-and-dmx/
Basically what this is, is a wifi connected iPhone running an app to control an arduino controller to handle the lights. I thought this would be pretty cool to have in the vr-4 so you could essentially have mood lighting. I thought this would be cool to have for like drive-in movies and such. Then I thought about having an iPad as a CarPC. It basically has all of the functions a car-pc needs.
The iPad is
Height: 9.56 inches (242.8 mm)
Width: 7.47 inches (189.7 mm)
This would have a conflict with the DCC. Then I thought about removing the DCC, and using the existing arduino controller to talk to the DCC controller and have the iPad act as the controller. You could even write the app to have the screen images that you would normally have for the DCC. Even the buttons!
So, I am asking, how difficult would this really be to accomplish? It can't really be that difficult to write a program that can handle this for an iPad would it?

Very cool idea. The language seems to be just like Java. If you did all the work to figure out how the controller works, I dont think it wouldnt be that bad :D. Theres a good possibility of coding a program to control the ECS or AA also...
Man I need to start programming again maybe we can work on something ;).

I've always thought it would be cool to replace my entire dash with a few touch screens that way I could drag my gauges where ever I wanted. It would require a lot of programming and making a few circuit boards to control all the gauges, switches, and radio via USB. It would be worth it because if someone came up with a kit that was plug and play for windows you'd get a lot of buyers. The Telsa sedan has one: http://gizmodo.com/5204805/tesla-model-s-electric-sedans-huge-haptic-touchscreen-dashboard-in-action It's fucking sweet.

I was more thinking of just DCC and Audio via the 30-pin dock connector. Adding in gauges and the sort is a whole different level. lol. The iPad has built in gps, and I have a wifi puck for Clear with 13.1MBPS WiMAX.
Keep posting suggestions people. We can do this!

If you know how to program C/C++, the arduino is super simple to program. You'd probably need to write a serial interface between the iPad and arduino (probably via a USB->Serial chip) and just send commands to the arduino to control a solenoid that's attached to the climate control mechanisms. I've wanted to do something like this because it would be stupid easy, but don't have the time with college and work.

I had already planned to use a MAX2323; At least people aren't saying this is a dumb idea. Thank God!

Not at all. I've really wanted to replace the radio area and Climate control with a touchscreen to run EMU logging software, music and DCC control, just no time or money. Have you had any experience using linux device drivers? If you were to use an actual PC, it's not too hard to write a user-space driver to control stuff like the DCC through the Parallel port with some supporting hardware. So many ways to do this, you just have to decide which way is easiest with your skill set.

If iPad support non-standard Serial speeds, you may be able to use it as a logger.

I was more or less thinking about imitating the commands that the DCC sends and receives to the blackbox directly behind it and letting that still control all the servos and what not. I am pretty sure the controls and screen are just an interface to the blackbox itself. I need to really look into the diagrams and hopefully they will have one for the controllers in there. I doubt it though.
I have 0 experience with drivers, but I believe that if there can be enough intrest in this, that I can get my brother on board to help. He handles all of the autonomas systems for the F-35. :) I am not sure how I am wanting to go about all of this exactly, or how easy it would be to write my own apps for EMU and an HHH version of logging for the iPad.
I don't believe the iPad can communicate baud 1953, but I do have a guy working on building an all-in-one USB to OBD I for our cars for the cost of a keyspan adapter itself; maybe I could get him in on getting it to work with an arduino and an iPad.

I think that would be awesome. My DCCD is burnt out, I need a new head unit badly, and I OBD1 HHH log my car every time I drive. Combo solution would be bad ass.
I wish I knew how to do this stuff...all I can do is cross my fingers and hope somebody goes through with it!

Sounds like me and my car, except I don't have a head unit. :P my EMU is where my HU is supposed to be. lol

Ok, so I measured out the area for where I would put the iPad. With the DCC removed, there is roughly 8in vertical and 9in horizontal at the top, and it tapers down to 8in-7.5in at the bottom. These are rough measurements so don't take them for what they are. The iPad would have the be in landscape or you would have to remove the center dash vents. With the iPad in landscape, there would be some custom work needing to be done to fit the 9.5in (now width) of the iPad.
I am also a firm believer in making a clean install. There is going to be some body work involved, but it doesn't seem like it would be unmanageable.
Also, I am really wanting to have Bluetooth audio so that if someone pulls the iPad from the location it is in, say to watch a movie on the road, then they will still have audio with no cords attached. But this is a whole different can of worms.
Edit:

This could be used in conjunction with an amp for the BT audio. That was easy.

I just got off the phone with my brother. I think I am going to ship him the black box and the DCC interface. He is down to help, and he knows C/C++ and said Objective C and Coco Touch couldn't be too difficult to learn. Actually, if there are any DFW guys willing to put their car up for a test, you could possibly meet up with my brother and let him fiddle with it. lol. You might be able to score yourself a tour of the F-35 assembly line at Lockheed.

I want to use an iPad mainly because if I am going to spend upwards of 400-500 dollars to get a radio that I really want, it might as well be as sexy as the iPad. I have been extremely unimpressed with Android, not to mention the fact that it can get virus.
I was contemplating buying an iPad because they are pretty fucking sweet devices, especially when they are jailbroken. Figured I could just kill two birds with one stone and have a working DCC screen again. :P One that shouldn't burn out either! I think I am going to wait till the new iPad comes out before I get one, so this project isn't going to be finished anytime soon. People need to look at this as more like a 6m-12m ordeal. There is a lot of work involved just in getting the iPad/iPhone to communicate serial. Not to mention I cannot find the diagrams for the DCC. So I am going to have to figure out how the interface controls talk to and from the black box directly behind it. I am fairly certain the black box controls the screen, and waits for inputs from the buttons, so it is purely an interface, the DCC panel doesn't actually control the fan motor and what not, it just tells the black box what button was pushed, and the black box tells the screen what to show. It "should" be a fairly simple process if I can manipulate this exactly, and I am almost certain it is analog from the buttons
Can someone find some diagrams?

mini itx?
when i get around to building a car pc i wont even consider anything else. no limitations is the way i like it, throw on ubuntu-netbook with a touch screen and its super easy to use in a car.
can build it cheaper than the cost of an ipad, has a power supply that will turn the computer off if the car's battery is low, can find motherboards with serial ports, i can go on and on. i was considering piecing together some and selling them but decided against the idea.

I have seen probably over 100 CarPC setups and i have never been impressed by the interfaces out for them. I really like the way the iPad does all of its shit, I don't have to pull even more power from my alternator to run a PC. The iPad is just as powerful as these CarPC's but there are a lot of apps that I think would be fun to have in the car when you are on road trips. You can't play angry birds on your CarPC. I am not saying CarPC's are bad, I just want more function and better UI. Also, its not like you can remove your touchscreen from your car easily, an iPad should be easier.

Tthe UI's do suck, which is why i suggested the new Ubuntu netbook edition.
Also, assuming the install made the iPad easily removeable I could understand the want for it.

Find me one thing that ubuntu can do that a jailbroken iPad cant (in relation to a CarPC). I can show you plenty things that ubuntu can't do compared to an iPad. Secondly, I could never make as clean, or as functional of a UI as apple already has with the iPad. Not to mention that hardware doesn't always work the best way it should with linux. There is a lot of tweaking, and I would rather spend all of that time just write a DCC app. Along with the removability factor for security. Plus, the new iPad SHOULD have a Retina display, find me a touch screen THAT clear.
I think a lot of people are missing the fact that the iPad IS the ENTIRE setup. I don't have to have wires running all under my carpet. Just a clean, easy setup.
I mean, just look at the Tom Tom app, it IS a TomTom. The new iPads will hopefully have aGPS in the WiFi only model so I won't have to buy a 3G model. It would be impossible to have the clean UI that an iPad offers trying to use linux.
Not to mention I have an iPad outside of my car, and all of its' functionalities.

You can build a car pc with mini itx that fits into a double din slot, wifi, blue tooth, touch screen, terabytes of storage, remote access, use the parellel port to control relays in the car for locks, windows, alarms, starter, etc etc. All of which has been done before and has tons of support, and all of which you could build and get working in a day.
Again, its all about what YOU want to get out of if. If you like the apps and the UI, and you already have one, then clearly thats what you should use.

Like I said, if I can get this thing to talk serial, I will be able to all of this as well. Not also to mention that you could already do ALL of this with an iPad using wifi and an arduino controller. Jailbroken iPad is basically a computer, just a little different on the apps.

At this point I still don't see how well a ipad would work.
#1, it's too large to fit nicely into a 3S dash.
#2, no gps built in
#3, not upgradable
#4, I can't program and get things to function like your talking about- so for the average person thats not going to work.
#5, lack of hard drive space, and/or external conectivity.

1. I agree, this is going to take some work, most likely a custom dash.
2. The WiFi+3G models have GPS. Hopefully the new one will have GPS in both.
3. What do you need to really upgrade?
4. If you know C/C++, you can do it. Jailbreaking an iPad is the easy part compared to writing your own code. Did you watch the video to the link I posted up there? By no means is this for an average person. But I do believe that if I can write a DCC app and build a controller for cheap, along with figuring out a way to use the existing dash, I am sure some people will see this as enough functionality for a CarPC. By no means do I need my CarPC/iPad/Head Unit to control relays in the car for locks, windows, alarms, starter, etc etc. Have you seen the Viper setup for the iPhone?
5. 64GB isn't enough for mobile? Regardless, I can stream everything to an iPad, therefore, unlimited space.

1- Rebuilding a large portion of the dash isn't cool, if they had a slightly smaller ipad(7 1/2") that would be much easier.
2- I agree, i wish it had the gps(same with my ipod touch, I wish it was included)
3- I can't write code and most people can't. There are tons of options for pc's already, why rebuild the wheel?
4- I agree, It will be a sweet setup if you can get it done. But your going to be spending more money, time, and effort than building a standard carpc.
5- I have like 80gb of music, and 800+ movies my 32gb touch was filled up the first day I got it... With SSD prices dropping it will not be too expensive in the near future. Plus you can't even connect a usb drive, music cd, or dvd drive to the ipad.

Now I see your points more clearly.
I am doing this mainly for myself, because I am hella picky about UI. I am also tailoring this specifically for myself, and my needs. I don't listen to the radio, I don't even have any music on CD's any more, and I don't watch too many movies to begin with. I am really the only one that is ever in the car. I don't really drive anyone around. I spent $390 on my last Pioneer JUST for the A2DP capability. I know there are cheaper head units that do this, but not with the clean interface that Pioneer had to offer at the time. The other side to this is that minus the price of the ipad, I can have the arduino controller and BT receiver for sub $300. This is still cheaper than a CarPC/Head Unit. Can you use your CarPC outside of your car? Like I said, I am mainly doing this for myself, but I knew there would most likely be others interested, and I doubt I can do it by myself.

Prime example of what we don't need in here. I am no Apple Fanboy, in fact, I still bash Apple for their close mindedness.
What upgrades do I need?
I have no use for USB. I already have 4 USB ports in my car with 5v able to put out 10w each.
I still don't understand what you mean by upgrades. If the iPad stays smooth, why do I need to upgrade the hardware?
Again, there is no touch screen with the clarity, or any other CarPC app that has the cleanliness of an iPad. If I am going to have a touch reliant device, it is going to fucking look damn sexy. Most of your touch screens are ~120ppi. The new iPad SHOULD be at least 326ppi. The ONLY thing that offers everything that I want is an iPad, has nothing to do with Apple. I am sorry you are stuck in the same close-mindedness they are by saying I am wanting to do it because it is Apple. Wrong. It is like saying the iPad is a piece of shit. Still no other tablet competes. Just like with an iPhone. You can say an iPhone is shitty, but there is nothing that truely competes with it at every level. The statistics show that. A good product is a good product, regardless of the manufacture. I am doing it because I am one picky son of a bitch when it comes to a touch UI. Also, I haven't found a touchscreen for a PC that uses glass instead of plastic. I hate soft touch screens.
Also,
http://store.mp3car.com/Morex_Bundle..._p/ccc-204.htm
to add wifi, bluetooth, and the centrafuse interface with navigation, it is over $500 with shipping. I can buy an iPad for less and still take up 10w vs. 160w. Not to mention the CarPC is stuck in the car. I can take my iPad in my house and play HD movies off of it, or even my friends house. Can your CarPC do that easily?

your really drinking the coolaid. You dont have usb connectors on your ipad. Want to upload something quickly? esata! want to plug 6 devices? Why not a reverse camera? Oh WAIT no you cant... how about anything else.. oh wait..no SD slot either, want to plunk a 500 gig drive in it? nope... how about all the data logging already written! and not to mention 1000000's of other real already written apps(even Ifart!). But hey have a blast. Btw there is already a ipad car interface, of course its certainly not going to work on a 3s. its like 1200$ yeah your ipad 600$ + 1200$ thats super cheap.. go for it though, it will be good for a laugh watching you try.
theres 1000's of touchscreens out there... rofl and you think none are like the ipad screen... just get a windows 7 pad if you want to carry it with you so badly. Theres like 5 out already. Or touchpad PC's... all kinds of interfaces. Hell I can edit the one quickly on windows. The Dell Streak will be out very soon.

Again, I dont need a backup camera, my head turns, and I have had 0 issues until now. Never in my life have I backed into something. Sorry.
Dont need to plug in 6 devices, like I said, I already have 4 ports in the car.
What do I need an SD card for? I can't think of a use for one. Sorry.
There are 0, read again, 0 dataloggers for the iOS for OBD I, lets not even talk about Mitsubishi specific.
I am building my own interface for the car using an arduino controller. An ardunio controller is about $60. Everything else is code which doesn't cost money. The only other expense is the BT receiver which I think I can add onto the ardunio or just buy the receiver outright at $100. That is the total expense for everything that stays in the car. $160
Again, I am building this for me. Also, like I have already said, none of the 1000's of touchscreens out there will have 326PPI and maybe a very small handfull are glass screens. Have you seen the clarity of an iPhone 4? Did you really suggest getting a windows 7 pad?
Now you are starting to make me mad. This thread isn't about fucking CarPCs. I can't remember where I asked if I should use an iPad or a CarPC. I stated that I AM going to use an iPad, and thats what this thread is about. Please stop adding fluff to a conversation like a woman does when she argues. No offense to women, but it's true. If you can't stick to the topic, DONT FUCKIN POST! Isn't that the rule anyway?
Lastly, I am failing to see how you are contributing to this thread to move the idea forward. I cannot stand people that oppress new ideas. If anything, this can only further progress our platform.

Do the iPad just to spite the nay sayers :P
As for the support argument, that's one reason to do it. Make apps and share them to people who want to do the same thing. And those of you make ridiculous arguments for carPC. Seriously, quit jacking off in your car all day. You don't need 500Gb of storage, you don't need 6 devices, and you don't need a blazing fast computer in your car to do shit like what blindmist is looking to do. Why spend more money and overbuild it? If you're using an arduino for hardware control, you're open to a lot of the things you guys are ruling out.
BTW Mikes2nd, you're probably gonna end up on my ignore list.

I actually dislike apple, but I do hav to say that the video of the mustang had the best looking carpc interface I've ever seen. I like the idea of using a tablet pc (nice and small), but I think it would probably be easier to make an interface similar to the iPad's than the reprogram all the data logging software (and whatever other windows programs you want) for the iPad. This is partially why I have never made another carpc (I made one back before they were popular), which is that I could get linux to boot up fast, but windows took too long. And I wanted the carpc to do a lot more than just entertainment (music, movies, gps, etc), I wanted it to do all my logging and tuning software as well but no software for linux :(
But good luck to you. Keep us updated. One question though, how do you plan on powering the iPad? Are you just gonna run it off the internal battery, or are you going to have connected to the car's battery somehow?

It will be removable so he can charge it as he normally would, and I assume there are car adapters he could work in somehow.

Correct, since I am needing to talk serial, I am already going to have a connector plugged in, all I have to do is supply 5v at 10w.

rofl this whole thread is moot... your dream of using your ipad(omg 326ppi! nothing else does that... right ) is just that, but either way I wish you all the luck in your endeavor and please keep us updated on the progress... I apologize for questioning the dreaminess of having an ipad in a 3s...

This really isnt that hard Mike. The difficult part is figuring out how the DCC head unit talks to the controller. And what do you know about coding and hardware? Whats wrong with wanting an iPad in your car? Lots of people thinks its a great idea. Along with the big car companies putting touch screens and data storage and wifi in their cars...It will probably end up being standard in a few years.
What is your problem? Pull the stick out of your ass and quit being a douche for your own fat mother, please....Oh great that sounds like something you might say.
Also, please enlighten me as to what context you are using the word moot.

Grow up, and GTFO. You can go troll somewhere else. We don't need that shit on 3SGTO.
Edit: I noticed that you troll here quite a bit. Enough to prompt me to actually use the report feature. That's a big step for a stoner who is pretty passive about most things. Also not to mention I fail to see where in any of your posts that you actually help people here. All I see is you trying to start shit with people and troll constantly. So, why are you here again?

Am I totally missing something here or am I on the wrong page. Reading the entire post I noticed no reference to the following site. If you have not been to these they are a must see. I had thought I had view this on this site before but maybe not so here it is. Why do the programming when some else has already invented the wheel.
You guys want interface?
This is awesome stuff.

This doesn't control climate but it does display just about everything else. Plus, our cars have Digital Climate Control as built in options.

What I dont see in that link is any output control. It records data nicely but you cant like turn on a valve.

Doesn't work on OBD I. Secondly, that isn't what I want. Way off.

I will have to modify my dash, but there is room. I have measured it out and there will be some cutting involved, but this shouldn't be a problem for me.

OK. Admittedly it doesn't control anything but the displays are second to none that I have seen anywhere.
Yes, it is OBD II only but that is today. Tomorrow may be different, who knows. It may be able to work with something like the AEM EMS Series II since they do have WiFi capability also. After all WiFi can go both ways so all that is needed is something to control. I know it sounds overly simple but there has to be someone out there with the smarts to find a way.
Almost everything on the iPhone, iPad, etc. is programmed in Objective-C and Apple already has the necessary Classes to do just about anything one could imagine and if it doesn't then writing Classes to do what you need is not that hard to do. Apples entire Development System is free on any Mac and contains everything you need to program in Objective-C including access to all the frameworks.
As for placement, maybe an iPad could be inserted [on a special bracket] diagonally into the dash opening with a door that closes behind it. To use it just slide it out sideways [2:00 to 8:00] and rotate into place in front of the center console. Just thinking outside the box.

I thought about the idea of an Ipad to use like you want but I think it will look to big for our dash. It will fit if you cut the dash, but proportion wise it looks off I think. It will be cool to see it and look if it flows better than what I imagine.
