View Full Version : Remote Oil Filter

I want to run a much larger oil filter, even the filter on my 4 banger ranger is 2-3 times as big as ours. It seems as if the best way is going to be a remote setup.
No, I don't want canton or some other thing like that. I just want a remote setup that takes a giant domestic filter of some type.
Who makes a remote filter mount that will fit our setup?
Looks like there may be some options here:

This looks like my best bet so far:

FYI: Here are filters that fit that trans dapt remote kite:

They dwarf the stock filter
I'd use the Purolator L30001 or the Wix 51515

Not sure if you have seen this thread. I really don't think it has the info you want but it's on the subject.

yeah I read that earlier, there isn't a lot of room for a larger filter in the oem location. I want something BIG and domestic so replacements are cheap and available at the parts store. No sense in having to mail order oil filters IMHO.

A larger filte makes sense as long as the flow rate is the same or better than stock. However Mit have been using the same Z79A filter on all V6s for years and not had issues. As long as you change it often enough I think it's fine. Also if your 4 banger ranger is diesel it will always have a larger filter. However as long as it's done right it can't hurt anything.

Good thread...I've been thinking about this also.
I think the missing link is an adapter for the original oil filter location...which shouldnt be too hard to find.
Edit - looks like your first link might have it.
I like the WIX also...

I also think the driver's side is the most logical position, but would most likely require cruise delete at a minumum (which is fine for alot of us, lol)
You can put something behind the driver smic. My oil filter is there now and there is plenty of room. Bad pic that is also in above thread:

I was thinking something similar. I know I use these motorcraft fl-820s filters on my 5.4L truck and they seem like a larger, good quality, low-priced, and widely available filter. I may look for a remote adapter and swap it in.

mitsu has plenty of issues with keeping the oil clean IMHO. The ranger is a 2.5 liter gas engine and has 2-3 times as much filter.
Matt at DR runs a similar setup on his 8 second car.

Yeah, I am one that cannot do without cruise. I'm going to order the kit soon and try to find a location that is easy to get to, doesn't spill oil over everything when changing, and doesn't require deleting anything.

Yeah that's the location I would use. Nice setup, where did you get the parts and is it a stock filter?

did you just holesaw out a spot in the lower splash shield?
What I did there is probably not the most ideal setup. I am using a non-crossover block, so I had to do something like this. All it is is a mitsu oil filter housing drilled and tapped for the eye-bolts used on the stock oil cooler. I used the ends of the stock oil cooler hoses and some high-pressure, high-temp fuel line to connect everything. I did just cut a hole in the splash shield for the hose to pass through. I used a rubber grommet to protect it. You will want to use a hard line to route from the block around the belts for obvious reasons. I think I made the bracket to hold it, but the bolt holes are there for the oil cooler, so it wasn't too complicated. I have a front mount oil cooler before the filter. Downside to that is if my oil cooler clogs, my engine dies. I believe the normal housing has a relief valve for such an event. I take care of my oil though, so I'm not too worried.

Yeah you should probably improve the set up some but it seems you are on the right track with it. I see why you wanted the other thread to stay OT. ;)

I'm surprised nobody posted this yet.
Canton Remote Filters (http://www.cmfilters.com/filter_kits.html)
You can get canister style or screw on style. It might be a little pricey but this would be my choice if moving away from anything stock.

doesn't meet most of my requirements
1. no affordable filters
2. no locally available filters
3. do not want canton
4. do not want non bypass, I'd rather have oil bypass the filter than not have pressure at all

I was just looking around on Summit and you can buy just the Canton oil filter plate for $65...from there there are a few options on the filter mounts, and of course whatever lines you'd want....I am thinking about $150-200 for a nice set-up if you piece it together yourself.

Good info.
I'm going to try the trans-dapt since it is about 1/4 the price of that.
