View Full Version : Oil in rear turbo intercooler pipes.....

Ugh...so yesterday I took off my rear turbo pipe and noticed a fairly good amount of oil inside of it, as well as some oil residue around where the O-ring seats on the housing itself, probably explains my puff of smoke on decel  So my question is: does this mean I need to rebuild my rear turbo now? How can I prevent it from blowing oil any further? I know it's far fetched, but could PCV system have anything to do with this? I really hate the idea of rebuilding a turbo with ~1k miles on it, but maybe it's time for the 19t upgrade while it's getting rebuilt :w00t:...too bad the wallet won't allow it

LMI strikes again?

Haha thankfully no....these were my stock 9b's converted to 15g by Markoverclock...wonder if they have any sort of warranty

I would definitely check the PVC system and also possibly drop the downpipe and check for oil in it. How many miles are on the engine? Blow by can cause turbos to blow oil.

:( You guys are bumming me out lol the engine and turbos both were new 1k miles ago, I had the engine built with all forged internals, and turbos were converted to 15g's. The only place I see oil in the IC pipes is the rear turbo pipe, and I've checked the PCV valve to make sure it rattles, and it does. What else could cause this? I only get a slight puff of smoke right after I let off the gas, none at idle unless I free rev and a puff comes out as the engine settles back to idle

I thought oil in the rear turbo pipe + oil cooler was normal :D

some say it has alot to do with breakin?

Hmm well I did break-in properly, so I dunno I may have to do a compression test and see what I can find

if the turbo inlet is oily it is coming from the crankcase breather. If engine is otherwise healthy get a catch can.

Yeah as far as I can tell the engine is very healthy and no other problems other than a puff of smoke on decel/between shifts, I think the oil is coming from the intake tube, when I did my clutch swap I noticed that oil was only in the rear turbo intake pipe attached to the stock bubble, the front side was bone dry, so I'm guessing that my PCV valve is not working properly or something, it rattles, but could still be bad. If the oil is in the intake pipe, it makes sense that the engine would be burning it from there, as well as it getting through to the compressor side and out into the rear IC pipe. To do it correctly would I need 2 catch cans? I'm not entirely sure how to set one up to feed off of both heads...links or pics would be welcomed

2 catch cans may be best

But I just run one between the rear value cover breather and the intake tube

So you just run one in-line from the hose that attaches the rear head to the stock intake bubble? I'm pretty sure that's where my oil is coming from since only the rear intake pipe had oil in it from the hose going into the bubble. I'd love if this solved my smoking problem ;)

Ah, that must have been quite alarming for you Matt lol. You can try the inexpensive inline "fuel filter catch can mod" that the DSM guys often implement. Most local automotive stores should carry some.

Oh yeah! I will shoot you an e-mail tomorrow. I have not forgotten and have finally settled down for this week *whew* =]

Yeah, I wasn't in the best mood after I pulled the rear IC pipe and saw how much oil was in there, just ordered a catch can lastnight tho, so we'll hope this solves my slight smoking problem! Sweet sounds good, oh and I was thinking, would it be more beneficial to you for me to plug my O2's back in so that you can see what my fuel trims are like since MMCd apparently only likes to display L,M,H fuel tables at like 99.4% all the time lol. Otherwise, I can record a log with TunerproRT so that you're able to see what my WBO2 is doing....let me know what is best for you!

Wow dude, after reading through all the old threads on this site, we've had the same progress with our cars. I had the same problem you have here and ended up replacing turbos + krank vents + catch can... and now we have the same surging problem.

Yeah I've replaced PCV, doing krank vents soon, and still have to pull turbos and rebuild them. My surging problem isn't as much of a nuisance it seems as others are having, but it is annoying whenever I am just easing into throttle and building a few psi and holding. BOV then rapidly blows off until I let off the throttle  Hope to have all my issues fixed soon tho

what, it's there to stop the tubes rusting...what's your problem? ;)

ke ke lah :p

Oh I think I'd be happier with rusty pipes than having a smoke screen behind me whenever I romp on it :p It's embarassing

I talked to 3sx and they tried to soften the spring as much as possible without causing leaks at high boost. They couldn't figure out a way to fix the surging either, but supposedly it isn't damaging, just annoying. I'll live with it... Everyone thinks my car is broken when I BOV blows. I don't think the surging will be any different of a nuisance.

BOV blowoff means the car is broken!! Damn my car is downright unrepairable then, I give a little BOV salute every time I have a chance :p
