Some of you know that I have a BRZ... My mod-list is as follows:

- Cosworth Panel filter
- Wheelhaus CF third brake light
- JDL Auto Design UEL header
- JDL Overpipe
- JDL "Ultra Quiet" frontpipe. Catted & Resonated.
- Open Flash Tablet for loading tunes
- STI/Group-N engine & trans mounts
- SRP throttle pedal
- TRD clone spoiler
- Whiteline diff bushing inserts (rear only, the outrigger bushings make too much diff whine on decel)
- Perrin 2.5" Resonated Catback
- Carbotech XP10/XP8 pads (for track days, way too dusty for prolonged street use, IMO)
- Maximal Performance Oil Cooler
- Ohlins Road & Track coilovers
- TOM'S DOT red taillights
- SPC rear camber arms
- Whiteline subframe bushing inserts
- Enkei RPF1 17x9 ET35 in Gold
- OEM mudflaps
- GT3 brake air guides
- Whiteline 20mm adjustable front sway bar
- Essex AP Racing "Sprint" BBK

I did a couple of autocross events on the stock prius tires.

I won C Street first try with my bone stock BRZ. My fourth run was my fastest, for a win by 0.7 seconds.

I got 6 runs in at my second event. My fastest was the 6th run. I essentially didn't have much competition, I was about 3 seconds ahead of second place, which was running a Porsche 968 Spyder

Track day, bro! Not in the GTI though :) I'm at Shenandoah Circuit at Summit Point Motorsports Park, in West Virginia. What a beautiful facility! I'm here with Trackdaze, which so far has been an amazing organizer. My instructor is fantastic, really egging me on and giving me great guidance.

I love those cars. Planning on picking one up in a couple of years as a track car, waiting for them to drop into the mid teens for a good used one.

You shouldn't have too much longer to wait, they're getting into the upper teens now.

For track use the only "must have" things are brake pads and a reflash (if it's an early car the ECU mapping was pretty lacking and would knock at high RPM after shifts, which eventually blows out the direct injector seals) so things are pretty cheap in that regard. I went for the "nice to have" oil cooler, but in Texas heat it may become more of a "must have" :)

From what I hear, they're worth it. Better ride quality than stock and with the twist of a knob they're pretty good track dampers.

http://i.imgur.com/CVd1lg4.jpg

Quite a bit of rake until I get the rears on, hopefully tomorrow.

http://i.imgur.com/YNkVCyy.jpg

-2.5 degrees of front camber with OEM fitment wheels and winter tires looks atrocious, for the record.

http://i.imgur.com/bSd8F21.jpg

DocWalt
12-27-2015, 08:38 PM
I finished installing my Ohlins today and aligned the car. -2.5 camber up front (Might bump it to -2.8 or something, depends how my tires wear) and -2.0 in the rear. About 1/32" toe in front and rear. Set the dampers to 15 clicks front and rear and took it for a few short drives. For being so much stiffer springs than stock (I'm using 60N/mm front and 70N/mm rear. Ohlins provided 60N/mm all around) the ride is sublime. WAY better than the KWs on my GTI. I'm excited to get some miles on them now :D

No pics yet, I finished up pretty late. The car is sitting pretty much an inch lower than stock. I'm 1mm from running out of adjustment in the rear. The new rear springs being so much stiffer meant I had to lower the back ~8.5mm which puts the height adjustment nearly bottom out. Also, the car looks hilariously bad with that much camber and terrible offset wheels...

DocWalt

My car is filthy as it's been raining for something like ten days straight and it was too cold to bother washing it today, sorry :)

http://i.imgur.com/AswySMU.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/4VxMVbV.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/yY927Sh.jpg

Alignment specs right now are -2.6* camber up front and -1.9* in the rear. 1/32" of toe in front/rear (wandered too much on my winter tires with 0 toe). The front has settled to 25 1/8" fender to ground, rear is 25 1/2". I think I'll raise the front a bit to 25 1/4" after it finishes settling 100%.

I was at 15 clicks on the coilovers, I set to 12/13 front/rear. That seemed to get rid of a bit of the choppiness over little bumps, the Ohlins ride a lot like stock, but a bit more controlled. They definitely have less travel though, which sucks on crappy Pennsylvania roads.

DocWalt
01-02-2016, 04:54 PM
Looks like a reasonable drop that's still daily beatable. How'd you do that to the front sway bar end link?

Yeah, a bit less than an inch drop. I can raise it to higher than stock if I have issues. :p

I'm an idiot and didn't brush the rust off of the threads so as I spun the nut off it jammed and that was that. Once I got the strut off of the car I had to put literally all of my weight onto some channel-locks to keep the joint from spinning as I cranked the nut off. I brushed the rust off of the other bits I took apart and they came apart fine with no damage to the hexes.

My buddy is so concerned with his breaking at autocross it's almost funny. He said I'm the most relaxed person he knows. I think I've just been trained by the GTI.

On that note, I did buy a spare halfshaft since they tend to explode when launching with sticky rubber.

I'll let you know how they fare after 4 hours of track time in mid May :) I'm still budgeting to replace them somewhere in late July...

Got the new Whiteline 20mm adjustable front bar on, that's not bad besides having to take the undertrays off for the hundredth time. Whiteline's new grease-free bushings are neat. No grease or teflon tape on the bar and not a single squeak or clunk, good stuff. Rides well too, which was my biggest consideration, tbh.

About the performance... It's noticeably more stable, but not by a huge amount. The car still rolls about the same and it will still kick the tail out if I'm aggressive on the throttle. I'm looking forward to my next autocross event now, I should be able to drive a bit more aggressively without having to baby the back of the car.

I feel more confident anyway, and I guess that's what matters lol

Yeah, sucks :(

About the front sway bar... After a bit of highway on-ramp/off-ramp testing... Pretty darn neutral now. There's noticeably more push on throttle, and it's less snappy off throttle. Easier to modulate right on the balance point of understeer/oversteer. VERY fun and really bodes well for the track :) I'll have to see how it translates to lower speed more jerky movements at autocross this weekend.

Really wet autocross today! Second time autocrossing in the rain, this time was quite a bit more successful, lol. This run was good for 3rd overall, even though it wasn't the greatest. Tons of fun at least :)

I had a pretty successful autocross today. It started wet but dried out. I finished first in class and fifth overall. The new swaybar made a huge difference in my confidence level, I can really throw the car around now.

Some fun stats from autocross yesterday: 1.2G steady state cornering, 1.32G peak cornering. 1.23G peak braking (sustained too!) and 0.66G peak acceleration. I'd say the RE-71Rs are pretty grippy!

I went to Summit Point's Shenandoah Circuit over the past weekend with Trackdaze. I had a blast! Here's an in-car video of a few laps. Not my quickest laps, but I had data or GoPro issues on the other videos...

A quick compilation of videos from my buddy on Saturday. I got to take him for a ride on Sunday and I think he was fairly calm, all things considered, haha.

A few more words about the suspension... It soaks up the bumpiness on Shenandoah very well even on somewhat stiff 5 clicks front and 6 clicks rear damper settings. Easily as smooth as stock was last fall even with the significantly higher forces generated. Really impressive!

The car balance is sublime now with the 20mm Whiteline front swaybar on soft, sooo easy to control the car's attitude even with a sloppy right foot. I'd likely want a touch more understeer on a faster track because as the tires got greasy the rear would start to wiggle a little around Big Bend (the fast left hand corner before the longest straight) which was a touch unnerving. It never stepped out, but I could tell it was moving around if I stayed at full throttle carrying the extra speed.

The issue with the EPAS overloading and shutting off would happen three places on track at least, worst of all in the Karussell. It may not be too obvious in the video but it was essentially flicking on and off the whole way around the banking which was killing my arms/shoulders fighting the car.

I pretty much need a harness or somehow lock the seatbelt as I can't stay in the seat anymore. This is also fairly obvious in the video...

I ruined the brakes somehow. Either I didn't let them cool long enough before parking or simply abused them too much, I'm not sure. I was cruising around the paddock for ~5 minutes after each session and parked in gear without touching the brakes or using the handbrake. I also started to fade the pads as I occasionally had to push noticeably harder to get equivalent braking.

I also wrecked an oil cooler... May have been damage from overtightening a leaking fitting last fall, but it didn't show up until this weekend.

On another note, really unimpressed by the Carbotech 1521 pads. They have a nice initial bite and that's literally it. They have a nice firm feel for normal braking, but as I press harder they just compress like crazy and feel like mush. They also get noisy after getting them hot. Pretty sure stock pads were better in pretty much every way.

I'm now getting some horrendous brake squeal, guessing from the lip on the inside pad... No fade and they performed well. Nowhere near as hard on brakes as Shenandoah though, so I'm looking forward to some further testing this year. Definitely need to do pedal dance more often, EBFD was really aggressive when I was throwing the car into corners. I have a clip to post of some serious brake smoke pouring off of my car when ABM drove my car. We swapped cars for a session and I put his car in the grass and stalled it and they black flagged the session with almost no cooldown.

My oil temps settled out around 235-240* F in the last session, ~90 degree ambient. Not too bad, all things considered.

Figured I'd finish this thread out...

My brother had been driving the car here and there at autocross, won one event and second at another. The setup clearly works, even if it's not THE hot STX setup.

I wrapped up the Philly SCCA Autocross STX championship with an STX class win and finished 4th overall for the day. I wasn't running data during my fun runs but I ran a 35.4 there. I had the pace during the timed runs to have pulled off at least 2nd place overall but I didn't execute well on my final run.
