I'm interested in seeing how it works. I am (over)due for a new computer and the quick glimpses I saw looks promising. I have played with Windows 8 and 8.1 and did not like it. The 8.1 laptop even had the added home button.

I really don't understand why they went and changed everything. They thought it would be easier to have the tiles since everyone is so mobile crazy now, but for me its like having your dish towels in a certain drawer for several years, then you remodel and move where you put the towels. You end up going to the wrong place all time because you were so used to going to that same spot before.

Really though, different isn't always better.

Should have an "XP" skin packaged with... I deal with a few computers at work and its a bloody nightmare when they move everything around just for the sake of it..

Agreed. XP was perfect as far as layout goes.

I actually like 8.1 quite a bit. I built my home desktop on it and it boots into a fully running desktop in less than 30 seconds. Initially I used an application that made it work like Win7 or XP but after I got more used to the interface I deleted the app.

The Task Manager in 8.1 is much better than Win7 as it shows a lot more details and options. You can mount ISOs directly from File Explorer without using a 3rd party app like Daemon Tools. You can even do it automatically at startup which is how I load the Factor Service Manual CD image. 8.1 also supports Drive Space which allows you to create storage using Raid 0, 1, and 5 directly. I have a 4TB Raid 0 installed this way. Win 8.1 supports very fast EFI boot and can be made super fast using an SSD boot drive or better yet, an M.2 SSD directly attached to the PCIe bus.

I trialed Win10 and I believe it has all the 8.1 features and more. The UI allows you to use the Metro tiles or you can use a traditional Start Menu. Sounds like steps in the right direction to me.

If/when I do it, Ima go with an SSD for sure.

The deals on them are getting better all the time. :)

Totally agree

The only good thing about it was if it was on a tablet.

My tuning laptop took a crap. I haven't even tried to run evoscan or anything else on my new one. Greg said he didn't have any luck with winblows 8 but I'm going to give it a shot here soon.

imno, 8.1 naysayers have never really used the system for long. I wasn't sold on 8 when I got my laptop, but 8.1 is an improvement. It took maybe a week to get adjusted to using it, and I simply put a folder on my desktop called "start menu programs" which contains everything from paint to calculator--I don't really miss the start menu now.

I'm totally going with the free win 10 upgrade. Why? First because it's cheap (free for 7+ users), second because MS will eventually kill support for 8/8.1 (Vista is approaching EOL, XP is already dead). Third, because even though I wasn't sold on 8 (and I nearly paid $100 to downgrade to 7), 8.1 is worth it. With an SSD, I'm running < 20 second HOT reboots (desktop to login). That's even faster than 7 can spit it out.

I refuse to go back. I have to use 7 at work, and it's a pain, imho (although partially because of all the bloatware installed on it). 10 has everything that made 8.1 great--and builds on it. I'm jumping ship at 1st opportunity.

Don't listen to the curmudgeons. If you need a new laptop, get something with 8.1 or 10, and an SSD. You can thank me later. (I also recommend a MINIMUM of 8GB ram, btw).

Windows 8 sucked, plain and simple, it wasn't a buggy piece of shit like Vista when it first came out, but it did over complicate user tasks in attempts to make it "easier". The fact people created plugins for windows 8 just so you could turn it off says something.

Now Windows 8.1 (really just windows 8 SP1) fixed all of the main issues I had with 8. I have two home computers running perfectly on 8.1.

Windows 10, I am hoping it will be like Windows 7. 7 was basically SP3 for Windows Vista and has been an awesome work horse. I am hoping Windows 10 is the same way.

At this point, I've moved past Windows, but get frustrated by the lack of software made for Linux distros. Most have alternatives, but I need a full MS Office, and now Unity3D. For office, I can do most of what I need on their office.live.com (but not everything), and Unity3D is now coming to Linux (currently using it through WINE). I know people have been saying it for years now, but I hope Linux (Debian/Ubuntu) really continues to pick up steam and get developers to make more software for Linux. Loving my Xubuntu 15.04.

I'm actually hoping 10 will be more like 8 sp2. :)

My only reservation is that I want the complete install setup so I can load Win10 from scratch instead of upgrading. It would be a huge pain to have to build a Win8.1 machine from scratch and then acquire the invitation to Win10 through the Windows update service.

My impression was Win10 is 'free-for-a-year', then you have to purchase a license at the regular price.

It gets even easier :)

Microsoft just provided a media creator tool that downloads and generates an ISO, USB, or DVD media directly. You might need to have reserved for this link to work.

LOvin 10 on my laptop, and in process of upgrading the mrs...

If you have an Elantech touchpad you have to return to a previous driver to get to work. You also mustshut down auto driver install or it will update/kill it constantly.

I have a Windows 7 Ultimate laptop which I don't really use right now. Is it worth the upgrade? I was thinking of upgrading my wife's cheapo 8.1 laptop first to try it out, but want to wait until she is done getting her Doctorate. Don't want to screw anything up right now, she's almost done.

I just upgraded my laptop (which I use for tuning Chrome) to 10 from 7. so far its like a compromise between 7 and 8.1 with the start menu back, but its still got the tiles in the start menu. I have never had a problem with the tiles on my desktop which is 8.1 so I will probably upgrade the desktop soon as well. I bypassed the waiting line by using the microsoft tool that you can download from their site. backed up my few important files (just in case) and did the upgrade option instead of the clean install. it installed just fine and all my apps stayed installed (except for an older version of AVG which needed to be updated anyways) and working along with all my files. very easy and pain free.

^^ What he said. With the upgrade selection it is painfree, and unlike past upgrades I did not need to reinstall anything with the exception of a new version of antivirus, and roll back 1 driver due to the updated one not working. I really am amazed how easy, complete, and trouble free it is.

yeah 10 is pretty nice, 8.1 can pretty much be brought back though with the tablet mode.

Windows 10 activation/installs surpassed Chrome and Linix in one day (14 million activations)... that's 10,000 activations per minute...

Mike, that is a horrible statistical analysis. That's like saying when Ubuntu released it's new LTS version, that it beats out all other OS activations in a single day. It's not new purchases, it's an upgrade.

Anyhow, I just set up a virtualbox to see what all the hype is about. Installed Windows 7 Ultimate last night, been running updates all day and night, finally getting Windows 10 to install, and I noticed my 50GB of space I gave the OS is cutting it close. Just a barebones (not additional software) windows install is already taking up over 35GB.

Edit: It's more like when the next iOS version or Mac OS version comes out with a free upgrade. Of course everyone jumps on the upgrade. Market share didn't increase, just shifted from one version to another.
