Nigeria is playing AMAZINGLY well. I don't think anyone can still question which is the group of death. This could (and probably should) have been a Nigerian victory today, instead of a tie. Wow. Just wow.

Just because ya'll wouldn't know what good sports are if it hit you in the face....

p.s.
I seriously do NOT get the lack of excitement for FWWC. Seems that most sports fans these days are more excited about and interested in the drama that happens OFF the field, rather than the sportsmanship that happens ON the field.

I'm totally into this international competition stuff. plus sexy bishes abound. what's not to like?

now while a bunch of us might not be going off on how great this is we are also not talking about the NBA. you've got to give everyone credit for that because frankly the only thing more pointless than the NBA is the WNBA. ;)

China demonstrates that if you make enough shots on the goal, eventually one of them is bound to go it. So freaking lucky they scored in the 91st minute. I feel bad for the Dutch. They can't win against Canada, which means they'll have to hope for probably a 3rd place finish.

Disappointing to only come up with a tie, but understandable. Press is just not a multi-role player, and it shows. Good call to sub in Wambach. If we'd started Wambach, we might have actually put a goal up. Not sure why we didn't bring in Tobin Heath though. She's really good about helping the team connect passes, as we saw in the last game. there were a lot of misread passes today. Rapinoe was also having an off day on 1:1 play.

A LOT of gamesmanship from Colombia. Might well be a record for most free kicks in any WWC match ever. Obvious bullshit yellow cards on Holiday and Rapinoe. Red-carding the goalie was entirely deserved, as she didn't even make contact with the ball, and instead just barreled into Morgan. Disappointing for Wambach to tie the all-time record for WWC goals, but we'll see what the future holds. She said this is her last WWC though.

I'm a bit worried about the next match vs. China. O'Riley will probably do fine replacing Holiday, but Press just doesn't have the skill on the wing that Rapinoe does (actually, few in the world do). That's also because Press is still a forward--and relatively young--which makes adapting to winger a bit tricky. She also looked a bit sketchy on some of her passes early on, but hopefully she settles.

Beyond 2015, it's going to be interesting to see what forward combination the US will run with in the future. We have several quality strikers, but the Morgan/Wambach combo has worked supremely well (when it's clicking). And while it's good to have depth in the roster--and get everyone play time to remain sharp--tandem play is where you begin to be able to read your teammate without communication. (Hey, it worked for Manning/Harrison). And that kind of instinctive knowledge of each other is what the USA needs to win at this level. Here's to hoping that Leroux and Morgan (or maybe press) can develop that kind of bond.

Tobin Heath game mvp. I think she might be the most underrated player on the team. She F'd China's game all up.

IPD
06-26-2015, 09:30 PM
Tobin was quite good, but she had a few touches that were too long, and she should have passed sooner. She had great recovery when she did lose the ball, but handing it off sooner would have probably prevented that happening in the first place. Credit for her corner kicks though--it's really hard to do that as a 3rd string pick, when Rapinoe & Holliday are taking all of them.

Hard to really pick an MVP for this game. Fantastic coaching choice for starting lineup; China never knew what hit them, and never figured out how to deal with it. Easily a 5-0 game if the USA had been able to finish more of it's chances. Johnston is a BEAST in the backfield--she's got the cool poise of Rampone & the take-no-prisoners attitude of Bueler.

I loved Rodriguez & O'Hara's performances today as well. We looked a lot more composed up front prior to our first sub in. I like Press, but she just doesn't seem to have quite the same talents. And poor Morgan was having an off day.

So it comes down to Tuesday; #1 team in the world vs. #2 team in the world in the semi-final. But France already showed us how it's done--we just have to make sure we don't do stupid shit like handball in the penalty area, or subbing out our best winger/s before the match ends. (France totally wins that game if Thomis plays the full 90).

Echo419
06-26-2015, 10:41 PM
Yeah, Germany just couldn't handle the pressure from those cheese eating surrender monkeys. We run the game we ran today and it'll be a beat down.

PS, does France have any actual native french on the team? It looked like Germany v Algeria or something.

IPD
06-27-2015, 03:47 AM
I wouldn't call them "surrender monkeys". France dictated 3/4ths of that game to Germany. Germany was on its heels for the large majority of the match. If France had been able to finish 1 or 2 more chances, or Germany hadn't gotten that lucky handball penalty, this game goes to France easily.

As to your question about who is Native? I think nearly all are. There are a LOT of black french people. It's up there with Belige & Nederland for racial diversity among its native citizenry.

Well England managed to hold on. I fell asleep before the game & woke up a few minutes before Canada scored. Australia's downfall should be a lesson to everyone; attack Japan's passing game & put points on the board early. Japan looked content to just pay it off...until 5 min before the match was over--when they put it in top gear.

Very, very difficult games left for everyone--except Japan. Japan has had a cake-walk through this tournament for the most part. Arguably the weakest group by far, and thanks to Australia taking out Brasil, Japan didn't even have to face them; Australia at #10, is the highest ranked team Japan has had to face in this world cup so far. I expect that England may be a bit more challenging for Japan, but not by much. The real test is going to be the Finals against either USA or Deutschland--tis a real pity that their game is only a semi-final.

I've also come to realize that the awards for golden boot, etc--are literally hogwash for at least this tournament. Germany has the top two goal-scorers in this tournament, and that's entirely because they had two of the weakest teams in the tournament in their group (Ivory Coast was the weakest by far). So the award doesn't really reflect most talented scorers, as it does reward players on the strong team who got to run the score up on the tournament rookies.

FANTASTIC game! The USA played defense sublimely. Poor Johnston was in tears after causing that penalty in the box, but Sasic wasn't able to put it in (a miracle in itself). Lloyd was able to capitalize on her PK, and then made a fantastic pass to O'Hara for another goal. This could easily have had a different outcome; although the USA dictated the game, the Germans could potentially have scored multiple times. Instead, the defense has extended their minutes of shutout time to epic proportions. I'm very impressed. Now I just worry about if we have what it takes to knock off an unstoppable Japan, who I can only assume will carry the day against England. Japan has WON every game in this tournament, and every goal has been scored by a different player--a testament to the depth of their roster.

I had a feeling that if the USA came to play (and after the loss in 2011, that's almost a sure bet), that Japan didn't stand a chance. The USA had their chances in 2011, and didn't finish them; lost the cup as a result. I congratulated Japan, as it was a very meaningful win in the aftermath of Fukashima. That said, this could be considered the "rubber match" between the two (2011 FWWC, 2012 Olympics, 2015 FWWC)--and the USA has punctuated it. I was elated to see Wambach and Rampone get subbed in. If we'd had a 4th, I'm confident that Shannon Boxx would have gotten in as well. Rampone was the lone person on the team the last time we won a world cup, and the USA was heavily reliant upon here during her tenure for leadership and guidance.

Plus we have a golden opportunity. Women's soccer is woefully underfunded in much of the world, and continued/renewed support for the US program means we'll continue to DOMINATE for years to come.
