so i was checking the timing on my car cause its been running kinda rough and i decided i should put the wrench on the cam gear to move the motor enough to be able to check it. i have now learned that its way better to leave shit alone or do it the right way...anyone else do something dumb like this?

Thats kinda like removing the plenum to polish it and having a bolt or washer fall into the dark abis of the lower intake!!

Replacing the front turbo, when we put everything back together (mainly the radiator) forgot to make sure the top hose was connected..... 5 mins later I was wondering why my car was over heating.

lol sorry to laugh but sometime we ignore that voice in the back of our heads that say don't do it then we say damn I knew I shouldn't have done that. Yes I think we all have. Just redo your timing and be very careful.

I did something similar only it was the bottom hose. I connected it, just didn't tighten the clamp. Lasted me a couple days before it blew off.

Years ago when I had the engine machined and the heads done, I went in to get some pics. I placed one head on the bench - turned to get a shot of the block then BANG! I turned to see the head lying on the floor, about an inch away from my foot which was only protected by a flip flop. Miracle number one was that it didn't crush my foot into mashed potatoe, the second was that the head landed right on the corner and did NO damage to the bolts or the important parts. I still feel sick everytime I think back about that day and how I still have both feet.

Haha I would be pissed if I did that. The Brad Penn oil isn't cheap.

Unfortunately- yes. Definitely don't do that. I was just thinking about posting pretty much the same thing- except I think I had the wrong plate installed and tried to cut it and shim the starter.... many times. Never really worked. It was also an atx- so that made things even more fun.

Hans has put a couple transmissions in and then realized he didn't put the clutch fork back on

I've put a motor back together and found the pistons laying on the table...................ok maybe not but some of these responses are pretty out there.
Oh I did install a timing belt on a 4Runner backwards once. They're marked as left and right cam with no real definitive marking as to which left and right they mean, come to find out they mean as if you're sitting inside the vehicle, not working on it.

I just want to quote this, and say I do not recall posting this... I am assuming Hans posted about himself using my username :lmao:

After working on the car for the weekend, I dropped in the battery and proceeded to start the car. Needless to say it didn't start, so I spent 30 extra minutes looking for possible problems before I called it quits. Early the next morning I realized the battery wasn't connected to anything.

Lowered a freshly painted bumper down on a jack stand. Not once, but twice.

I replaced the dash and forgot the two little connectors on the passenger side. I have no idea what they do but the car would absolutely not start. Took some searching to figure that one out.
Dropped the battery on the (bare) fender while taking it out of the car...

Actually this one was on my wife's Galant. I over torqued the valve covers and bent the covers beyond repair (they're sheet metal and the torque spec is 4-5 psi  )

I cleaned the engine bay for a show. Went to the show and the car ran like shite. On the way home, I romped on it and it blew smoke everywhere and had no power. Got back in the garage and saw that the MAS was disconnected.
