Snowboarding!!

Hey guys,

Been a little absent as of late - sorry about that! Been busy with life, you know how it goes.

I have gotten real big on snowboarding lately. I have all new gear coming in the mail, and a big 5 day trip (3 days of boarding) in Utah planned two weekends away!

I know Dave is big on boarding, and I saw a few other threads with a few comments, just seeing if anyone is still here that boards? Where do you like to go?

My setup (for those curious ones):
- K2 Subculture 158 (it's the 2013/14 model, got it for a great price)
- K2 Formulas (2015's... flat black)
- Ride Lasso Boots... the double boa and "intuition" liner sold me on these

All in all, it should be a great all mountain setup. I am into everything though, from carving, to jibbing/buttering/ to jumps (natural or otherwise)... I just have a blast the whole time! I also tried to buy a board/setup I can grow into a bit. I am only an intermediate rider, so I didn't want to get something that would be too much to handle. I am a really quick learner at this stuff though... I've done a lot of sports that are similar (skateboarding, wakeboarding, some surfing, etc).

I am going out to Powder Mountain in Utah with a friends family (crashing their family trip HA!) on the 20 - 24th, and I am so freakin hyped! I can't wait. It's the biggest ski resort in America, and has a ton of annual snowfall... fresh powder every time!! It's not a real well known spot, but it's a locals haven, and they kinda try to keep it that way.

Anyhow, boarders, speak up! Give me some feedback on my setup, and tell me about yours!

Getting last years models & having large feet has saved me a ton of cash. IIRC, the whole setup was under $400!

Make sure you lean back a bit more than normal in the powder. I've had a few friends eat shit not expecting the resistance.

A Ride fan eh? Same company as K2. They make good stuff for sure.

I am really hoping that my board is something I can grow into. Do you know anything about my board? I have only heard good things about the bindings, so I'm not too concerned there. And boots... well as long as they fit right, there's not much difference these days in durability (from what I've read).

Also (I'm asking you because you've ridden for as long as I've been alive practically), do you know anything about the Rossignol Taipans? The rental boards I have been using are like their baby brother (IDK what the name of the board is though). I am wondering what it's like to have more 'edge hold' compared to them. I hear that the K2 Subculture has great edge hold and I'm not sure what to expect with a statement like that. Am I going to end up locking into an edge and when I try to shift to the other edge, am I more likely to bite it?

Give me your experience, oh masterful one!

I just got back from boarding 6 days in Steamboat Springs, CO. The mountain was pretty dry but we had one day with 12" of snow which was awesome. I do everything but the double black diamonds since I've only boarded about 13 days total over the past 4 years. I got a little too ballsy in the big terrain park this time and suffered a minor concussion. Other than that I had a blast. My K2 equipment has worked well.

Sorry, can't add anything about your board that you haven't already read.

As far as the edge biting statement, I would not think too hard about it. Consider it mostly advertising/marketing bs. The rental board edges are usually not in prime shape, so you will have more "traction" with a new board. That doesn't mean it will throw you face-first into the ground, or "lock" you into a turn. You will be able to lean in and turn much harder, like a good set of tires.

TSB, what do you ride? 12" of snow... I've never seen a snow storm put down more than 8 or 9 inches before... 12" sounds like a ton to me haha. Glad you got some fresh powder though!

We still have grass showing at 4500 ft in the WA state resorts... the worst year for snow in probably 50 yrs.

i was just looking at the annual snowfall report for the west this year. Powder Mountain has an average of over 300" a year, and it's only has 115ish this year. No bueno. Hopefully it still lives up to my very loose expectations. As long as it isn't pure ice, it will be an improvement over what I'm used to.

Either way, I'll be riding my own board and gear, and that alone will be fun to play with.

When I first started in 2000 the WA passes had 200" of base. It has dropped yearly since :(

I have a K2 Turbo Dream 161. It's a little longer. I bought it that way because I wanted to ride powder but I never really got a chance to do much of that. It's a stiff all mountain board which is great for speed since I've been over 40 mph according to GPS but I'd like to get something with more flex next time. I may also try a shorter board possibly a 156 to see how much better the turn in is on moguls. Arbor has some nice boards I was looking at. I really need to demo a few different brands. I don't know for sure if or where I may go next year.

I have also never used anything over a 154 before (stupid rental shop), and considering im a solid 190-195, that's a bit undersized for me. I am hoping this 158 I got will be good... recommended for up to 210.

Where do you go to demo boards, TSB? Out west, are there options on which board you rent? The local place just has one type of board, and you get whatever size (they gave me a 145 at first last time! lol, felt so ridiculously small).

Next time anyone is coming to CO to do some skiing/boarding hit me up. I live down in the Denver area but have a season pass to Keystone/A-basin/Breck this year and can hit the slopes pretty much anytime I like.

Most ski rental shops have different packages you can rent. Usually a basic, sport, and demo. You may have to shop around to find one that does demo's. It's a little expensive around $80 per day so after awhile it can pay for a new setup, but over a few days you should be able to figure out what brands and types of boards you like. I wish I would have done that for a few days. They should allow you to exchange your equipment as many times as you want during the day too. My friend did that this last trip. He spent about the cost of a board and bindings on his rental for the whole trip though.

Trip went well. I'm sore as can be... too many hard falls haha. I did a few blacks out that way.... WAYYYYYY more steep/challenging than any of the blacks I've done before. It makes the local place look like a bunny slope now haha.

Going to the local spot this weekend too. Gotta get in the boarding while the cold is still here!
