View Full Version : Cars you covet?
Domestic iron was an itch I could scratch, and I did, but along the lines of cars I would love to have owned but never did, the 'do want' list included an Audi Quattro, stemming from flagging the Press On Regardless rallies back in the seventies.
I have a serious jones for the Lotus Esprit that has only grown over the years.
The 427 AC Cobra was another one I'd have killed for, but marrying my ex made my plans to do a kit version untenable.
I'd have loved to own a BMW MI, or a Ferrari 599, too.
I came dangerously close to buying a '75 Pantera once; the car was for sale and I had the money, but I literally had nowhere to park it.
How about you guys? :)

I've always said I would own a Viper GTS one day. I'm not so sure it'll happen anymore since I have to start thinking about retirement. I've owned both a Barracuda and a Challenger in the past, but they were basic models with 318 V8's in them, I would love to own a hemi Barracuda, but with a modern suspension upgrade. Those old torsion bar suspensions were crap.
I've always been a big Lamborghini fan, but I realize that's a dream I'll never get close to fulfilling.

A friend of mine built a Factory Five Cobra and put a Gen3 6.1 HEMI with a cam in it. It put down 408 to the rear wheels. It's a lot of fun.
I have wanted the 818 ever since seeing it in the design phase when I went with my buddy to Maryland to check out the Cobra. I need to finish my 3k before starting that project though.
I'm also beginning my "Monster Dakota" project. Something that I've wanted to do for years.
I like cars you build, more so than the ones you buy.

Ford GT, Viper GTS, Viper ACR, new Viper SRT-10, Audi Sport Quattro, Lotus Esprit TT V8, Lamborghini LP 670-4 SV, 818, Evo 7... I could go on :p
Ah, Kenny, how could I have overlooked the Ford GT? :)
I also harbor a generalized horniness fo Aston Martin; I'd be good with just about any of them, frankly.

Always coveted the F40 because of how raw and visceral it is.

Well there are a ton of cars I would own, and I will be buying a Viper one of these years. However, i'll go with a different approach of what would be awesome to build (i.e. completely crazy builds, not stock) but I won't ever do
- Supercharged LS1 Widebody ~2013 miata (that would be fun but not a pos looking car)
http://www.awrracing.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/2006-flare-7.jpg
- Exige with a k20 turbo
http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x410/ZZ335i/2008%20Lotus%20Exige%20S240/IMG_47771_zpsfbbc5e32.jpg (http://s1180.photobucket.com/user/ZZ335i/media/2008%20Lotus%20Exige%20S240/IMG_47771_zpsfbbc5e32.jpg.html)
- ls1 esprit
http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs21/i/2009/266/9/f/Lotus_Esprit_Turbo_Cars_Coffee_by_Partywave.jpg
- Evora with anything to make it fast (i like lotus, can you tell?)

I could go on and on and on and on, but i'll leave it with this oddball. PRO TOURING style conquest/starion. Needs to be pro touring, big huge wheels, super clean interior, big engine, etc.

I just love cars
I'd like to think we all have some serious commonality - more than I'd have guessed.
John, love the Daytona, never entertained the idea of it as 'ownable', but there are kits, aren't there?
Broadens the menu a bit...let's see if this works...

Okay, ^^THAT^^ is a Vetta Ventura.
A friend of mine owned one of a purported two ragtops that were built - this is a crappy picture I took of THAT car about 28 years ago:
http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/rr214/1backforty8/VettaVenturaRB_zps953225cd.jpg (http://s485.photobucket.com/user/1backforty8/media/VettaVenturaRB_zps953225cd.jpg.html)
Now, this is how I heard the story:
These cars were originally called Apollos, hand-beat metal from Italy, outfitted with American running gear, including (normally, at least) the old aluminum 215 CID Buick V8.
The original attempt to generate sales stateside failed, and a fellow/fellows from Texas decided to re-introduce the cars, re-christened Vetta Ventura, at one of the big auto shows, can't remember which one.
Of the two ragtops, one was chosen for display, fitted with wheel-flares, painted in a metallic green, and given a 389 Pontiac with tri-power and a turbo 400 running through a Corvette driveline and disk brakes.
This car ^^ had all that, but not the paint.
About three years after I moved to where I currently live, I heard through the grapevine (my Vetta Ventura-owning buddy got banished from my life during my divorce; guess why) he set about refurbishing the interior.
He pulled it apart - as the story goes - and found green paint on the floorboards.
Curious as I was, I couldn't bring myself to inquire.
About five years ago, a mutual friend told me he'd died.
Anyway, he also had one of the old Buick-powered Apollos he'd bought for his step-dad, who had died before my ex ended our friendship.
These cars were something to see; the pics don't really show it, but the profile was very E-Type Jag, with the Ferrari-looking front end.
I can say I coveted this car, for sure. :)
Found some more info re the final disposition of the cars my friend owned; here is a link, with the relevant paragraph cited:
Jerry McGlothin: Italian Beauties, American Brawn Great Garage From Highline Autos Magazine (http://www.highline-autos.com/great_garage/6/Jerry-McGlothin-Italian-Beauties-American-Brawn)
1966 Vetta Ventura coupe Its one of 77 coupes, and the 1965 convertible is one of 11 cars. They were purchased from a lady in Detroit who inherited them from her father who lived on the upper peninsula in Michigan. Her dad initially bought the coupe to use as a parts car for the convertible but decided the coupe, having a rust-free body, was too nice to part out and, instead, he restored it. I am currently embarking on a full restoration of the convertible.

This list could get really long, but I will try to keep it to the top few.
427 Cobra

Monza 2+2 Yeah, its not an expensive or super rare car, but it was my first car and it is my goal to find another and make it badass and fuck with ricers with it.

My FD is probably the best all around car i will own, its a money pit but an absolute joy to own and drive. But in the spirit of the thread:
For me of cars i still have a small chance of owning...there can be only one:

The car that pushes all the right buttons i'll never own and never even have a chance to drive is the F40.

Really surprised no one jumped in and called that F40 a sin against all things Ferrari lol.(cause it's black) they only came in two colors and black was not one of them. But I think it looks the best in the black!
For me, 71 Hemi Cuda, 03/04 termi Cobra, 99 Diablo, badass built C10,02 TA

I think that's because it looks too good to say anything bad about it. I for one am the opposite of feeling the need to keep cars stock anyway, so I for sure will not go against anything done properly.
I think that was the Gas Monkey f40 wasn't it?

Nevermind, here's the gas monkey one. The black one posted above looks better with the stock flipups.

The Gas Monkey F40 looks awesome in person!

Currently I'm feening after this:
http://www.torquenews.com/sites/default/files/image-2250/model_s_14.jpg
Tesla Model S P85D. AWD instant TQ. 0-60 in 3.2 seconds. Just outside the price range for now.
I have two things that still appeal to me.
A twin-turbocharged prowler
and an SLK55 AMG with an E55 AMG engine (v8 twin-turbo in a car that weighs under 3200 lbs).
...for now, I'll probably end up getting the NA SLK55 AMG when I get stateside--assuming I can find one for around 20k.
one of these in the future hopefully

There are so many cars I wished I had that I haven't even bothered posting in this thread but the gas monkey F40 is at the top of the list.
Fuck the purest! Black is beautiful! and so are bigger turbos and such.
