View Full Version : 6G72 Coffee table

About 6 years ago I saw a picture of a V8 coffee table and fell in love with the concept. Just never had the space nor equipment to make one myself.

http://bestaholic.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/engine_coffee_table.jpg

Well, about a year ago, I picked up a rod knocking 92 stealth RT for very cheap. The car had very low miles and I had gotten a replacement long block for fairly cheap as well. Before pulling the knocking motor, I decided to put it thru some tests.

It made several trips to taco bell for a good 3 weeks. The girl in the drive thru once told me to shut the motor off because she couldn't understand me thru the PA. In fact, I daily drove this car during that time till the 5-0 nabbed me for no inspection stickers... :(

Let's see... It also raced a riced out honda CRX and won!

This motor would not quit! So to finish it off, I decided to have some fun with it. It held redline for a few minutes till I got tired of waiting and a headache from the noise (or maybe the cranky bitch neighbor yelled at me, I don't remember...).

Then out came the oil and coolant. Again, it took a few minutes before I got impatient with it...

So out came the NOS and it underwent a straight shot with no nozzles. Again... it survived and I was out of NOS.... :(

After the next restart, it finally bit the ghost when it jumped timing.

It was quite impressive! I pulled the engine and it sat in my garage all this time waiting for me to get what I needed to do something with it.

Here she is in all her stubborn furry!

Disassembled down to the short block. I cleaned and degreased the deck edges with an air buffer and brake cleaner.

http://imgur.com/qg6pB.jpg

I've never welded before, but my neighbor does it for a living. Figured if the special guys at work can do this, it'd be cake for me. After a 30 pack of miller lite and a half hour drive, I had my own mig welder and a mentor.

5 minutes after a brief tutorial, I was making sparks!

http://imgur.com/Pi54n.jpg

Note, I do not condone the consumption of Miller Lite.

An hour later, after some work with spot welds and a level, we have our finished piece!

http://imgur.com/BfyA6.jpg

The pistons are offset like the block. I wanted them to be square, but there was no good way to do them that way with the coolant passages on the side of the deck.

The block was then hauled off to my work and burned off in our small lab oven over night at 850 degrees. Doing this removes anything bonded to the metal and gets rid of all the oil and coolant in the steel.

http://imgur.com/6HC5y.jpg

She's ugly and ready for the legs!

http://imgur.com/mEaAx.jpg

This was the most difficult part. Using scrap angle and our 220volt steel punch/press, I tediously measured the pieces for where to punch all the holes. I used the motor mount bolts as well as the bracket mount bolts for the AC compressor and axle on the block.

http://imgur.com/gAogs.jpg

The casters will go into the 7/16th hole punched in the angle you see here. It took some time to get it setup to where the casters will sit square and even.

http://imgur.com/PkA2y.jpg

Next time I do this, I'll just use 2 pieces of angle instead of 4. One bolt stud will need to be trimmed down on the block, but it'll be a lot easier to set and level with 2 long pieces than 4 small ones.

It also took some time for me to decide which casters I wanted. Since this piece weighs about 80lbs and will sit on carpet, I wanted to get ball shapped casters so it'd be easy to push around and not ruin the carpet. These are the ones I decided on.

http://images.lowes.com/product/converted/074523/074523030707lg.jpg

They're rated at 350lbs and were available down the street at Lowes for only $16 (for all 4).

At work we also have a sandblasting room larger than most people's garage! It'll easily fit 2 cars inside. The sand used was a 24 grit clean blast sprayed at 120psi out of a fire hose. It'd take less than a second to spray sand thru your skin and down to your bones. A full body suit with breathable air is required in order to use this blaster.

http://imgur.com/Z6iKL.jpg

I decided to leave the oil rings in place inside the pistons as they looked cooler than the empty slots. Take note, the arrows on top of the pistons are pointing towards the timing belt side of the motor. ;)

http://imgur.com/LlZhp.jpg

That's where I'm at right now with this project! Just hauled it off to the powdercoaters for a sweet translucent blue powdercoating job. This is the color I decided on.

http://www.powdercraft.com/images/axles.jpg

I should have it back from them by the end of the week.

In the mean time, I'm calling around about where to get a glass top made up. I want it to have beveled with polished edges and be about 26"x32" in size. I'm going to etch some kind of design into it as well. Be it the letters 6G72 or something more creative like an embossed 3/S. Haven't decided yet but it'll be slick when it's done!

If you look carefully, one of the piston skirts are missing a chunk. ;) I made sure to use that one!

Took some time and I had to redo one of the rods a couple times, but I did eventually get it level. I used a sheet of metal used for cutting ducting as it was the most flat surface I had around the garage. It worked perfectly as a reference checker. The glass will be sittin on these round rubber pieces I picked up at Lowes. Any minor leveling that will need to be done, I'll do with those to get the glass perfect.

You can probably shim under the rubber pieces, so it will basically be invisible. And then after all of your hard work you will find out that your floor is probably 3/8" off level...

Overall the project looks great, can't wait to see it finished. Maybe you could get a stylized 3000 / Stealth etched into the glass. You know, like the shirts from keith / mobo back on that other site...

That's the exact design I was thinking. ...but I don't know if I want to free hand all that. I have to cut the design out with an exacto-knife of a sticky-backed blanket which will adhear to the back side of the table. The cut away design will get blasted so you have the etched imprint on the back side of the glass.

I've been thinking of one of these for a couple years now. The problem is that I've never ruined a motor yet. Apparently I need more RPM's & carelessness.

I would pay a grand for a completely finished 6G72 coffee table. Well, actually for any V8 too. Anybody have links?

Very cool. My fiances father made one out of a spare camaro engine and some round glass for his mancave, he had it so the carb and air filter were on top of the glass, so the glass was "built" into it. pretty nifty.

Good stuff, I've thought about doing this before too, but there's no way I'd ever be able to slide that one past the gf. One thing you may have to worry about though, those wheels you bought at Lowe's, I've used the exact same wheel before, and the hard plastic will discolor your carpet. (I put them on a King sized bed.) After about 6 months, we moved the bed and we had four brown stains where the wheels sat. Nothing we did could get it out.

Going to be a really cool table! :)

 I think there may be a couple different ways to attach the rods without having to weld them to the block.

In theory....You can make plates out of flat steel about 1" wide x 3/16" thick and long enough to reach the two head bolt holes on each end of the block. Drill two holes in the plate so you can weld studs (weld bolts in the holes and grind down the bolt heads) to bolt the rods to. Then you can drill two holes to match the head bolt holes and bolt the plates down using the existing head bolt holes in the block (use proper length allen head bolts). The plates could be powder coated separately and then assembled to the block. If you grind down the inner piston skirt a bit the pistons will self level when you set the glass top on them.

Again, in theory....To bolt the rods directly to the block, You could probably use one of the head bolt holes for one of the rod bolts and then drill and tap another hole for the other rod bolt. By the looks of the block, there isn't enough room to drill and tap two separate holes to bolt the rods to.

Just a couple ideas to maybe help you out on the next table. :)

Thanks bob! These were my first thoughts too as I originally wanted the rods square instead of offset.

The main reason I didn't go that route was because I didn't have any steel plates...

Welding bolts to the plate isn't a bad idea except the rods would need a flat surface to rest on and the back side of the plate also needs to be flat. I have no easy way to do that...

The next headache was finding a bolt the right size and lenth. The stock rod bolts were way too long...

I was then thinking I could make some kind of adaptor to fit at least one side of the rod into the head stud hole but couldn't get a tap the right size.

It didn't occur to me till later I could just cut off a head stud, put it in a lathe, drill a hole in the center and tap it for a hex bolt. I might try this with Ulrich's engine.

Got the glass in on Friday! Top notch piece from a place in Menasus VA called Dulles Glass & Mirror. Check them out at Glass Shower Doors, Custom Mirrors, Glass Tabletops, Glass Shelves (http://www.dullesglassandmirror.com). They have all kinds of options available. I opt for the 1/2" thick, tempered piece with a 1" beveled and polished edge. They made it custom to my measurements which is 28"x31". This will leave about 4" of glass sticking out from the pistons as it's resting on top.

Here's a couple pics of the quality work!

http://imgur.com/CeCeM.jpg
http://imgur.com/qpKy0.jpg

Spent the last couple weeks working on a design to etch into the glass. I ended up stealing this design from ActiveSeven, then used Microsoft paint to edit out everything but the car, then Microsoft Word to blow it up to 17" wide.

http://imgur.com/Rn9xL.png

For the letters, I used an old 3000GT rear piece as a stencil as I wanted the true Font found on the car. This didn't work out as well as I was hoping though...

Originally I was going to have a friend of mine who works in a metal shop, etch me out the design into a piece of spare scrap metal, but as I got to thinking about it, the metal would need some kind of adhesive to stick to the glass, otherwise the beads from the blaster will get underneath and mess up the design.

So what I did was mask the whole table with a 3M sticky back blanket, print out my design, then free hand cut it out with an exacto knife. This worked great for the image of the car, but the lettering turned out like SHIT! Looks good from 2 feet away, but up close, it looks like a 3rd grader cut it out... :(

Here it is masked off.

http://imgur.com/c7Rcn.jpg

Yes, you are seeing it backwards. This is because I etched the design into the back side of the glass. I did it this way for 2 reasons:

*The smooth side of the glass on top looks nicer
*If I fucked it up, I could just blast the whole back side and it'd have a "fogged" look to it which would still be neat.

Here it is all finished.

http://imgur.com/PBkgQ.jpg
http://imgur.com/0P65E.jpg
http://imgur.com/pJ91g.jpg

What I think I'm going to do is mask the table off again and cut a 20" wide by 6" tall rectangle out of the masking, adhear my 3000GT badging onto the table, then re-blast it. This will "erase" the shitty lettering on there and leave a true 3000GT emblem in it's place. The lettering will be clear instead of fogged and will look 10x nicer than it does now.

I'm going to have to come up with a better way of masking my design for Ulrich's table.

Total cost for the glass after shipping came to about $175 so scrapping it and doing another just isn't worth it... :(

I'm STILL waiting for the powdercoaters too. It's been 3 weeks now. Should have done that myself I guess...

Greg E
10-31-2010, 02:42 PM
BTW: 1/2" tempered glass is waaaay overkill. It weighs in at 47lbs by itself. I think 3/8" tempered will suffice just fine. It's not like it's going to be holding anything heavy on it...

It really looks fine the way it is.

I think if you try to use a larger stencil, the letters will overlap. You don't really have many other options than doing the rectangle you mentioned.

The glass beading doesn't look that deep. You may be able to polish it out with the same compounds they use to repair/polish windshields. You could also call the place you purchased the glass from. They would know how to polish it.

In any case, just don't get discouraged. It will look just fine when everything is together. Whenever I try to make something perfect, I screw it up! I'd probably leave the lettering as is. :)

You could only make certain areas slightly larger. It can be done but it would be a tad tedious.

That's a good idea, he could possibly take it to one of those places that repairs wind shields.

Well, after 2 months, the powder coaters hadn't touched my engine so I picked it up and purchased all the materials and coating gun to do it myself. One of the departments where I work is powder coating tephlon onto parts. We have 3 coating booths and ovens. Took almost a week to get an open booth, but the small one was open this afternoon.

This is one of the coating booths. It's the smallest of the 3 which measures in at about 25x15ft. The oven is a 10x10x7 ft electric oven so it's a bit bigger than the lab oven I used to burn off the parts.

http://i.imgur.com/0weyq.jpg

There are 2 garage doors which seal the room off and a large exhaust fan up on the roof to quickly suck out dust/contaminates. It works so well that if the powder didn't eletro-statically stick to the part, it raised to the ceiling. I literally had almost nothing to sweep up when I was finished.

http://i.imgur.com/XcTWv.jpg

Plenty of lighting to see all angles of whatever part is getting coated.

http://i.imgur.com/8h4IE.jpg

Peaking into the oven every 5 min to see if the powder had liquefied yet.

http://i.imgur.com/KfqGV.jpg

After the powder "gels" they say you need to cure the powder at 400 deg for 20min. Here's the parts just after the cure cycle. This pic gives you a good idea how large the oven is.

Should point out this is the smallest of the 3 ovens we have. The other 2 are larger than most peoples garages and yes powdercoating an entire car is an option. :)

Here we are!

http://i.imgur.com/Dg2yw.jpg

The color is the single stage chrome made by Eastwood. They have a couple different types of chrome powders but I chose the single stage because I'm not sure how long it'll be before I can get the booth again, and you only have 24hrs to put the top coat on before the chrome tarnishes.

The single stage isn't quite as glossy as the others, but it's still very reflective.

http://i.imgur.com/RlnTd.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/RnXuZ.jpg

The clear coat has yet to get sprayed on so I imagine it'll get even more reflective after that coat!

One thing I am disappointed by though how rough the powder cured in some areas.

http://i.imgur.com/VZ54Q.jpg

The Eastwood techs suggested not to use such a rough blast finish next time. They even told me I don't need to blast the part at all and the powder will bond very well to just the bare metal. Even still, the profile definitely gives the powder something to bond to. Next time I'll use the 220 grit bead blast instead of the 24 grit sand.

I can just leave this as it is but I want more reflection so after I do the black metallic coat on the crank lamp, I'll clear both of these in the super gloss clear. That should really give it a more deep, chrome-like finish!

Sprayed and baked the metallic black this afternoon!

Because the powder goes on cold, I was able to use masking tape to masking off the areas of the motor I didn't want coated. It worked decently. Any powder that fell out of place I was able to wipe right off with my fingers.

Tried to get a pic here of the metallic but my cell phone doesn't take clear enough pics.

If the booth is available again tomorrow, I'll spray the clear which should give the chrome the more mirror like look.

Well, to my disappointment, Lowes was sold out of the silver casters like the gold ones I bought last month. Ended up ordering them from their website and they should be here in a few days.

Eager to get the table setup, I went out and bought new pads for the piston tops. The one on the left was the one I was originally going to use, but I didn't like them after seeing them on the table. Tried to find a clear set that I liked, but none really stood out. Ended up picking up the ones on the right.

Decided not to wait for the casters.

I was worried about the table being too short height wise compared to the couch, but even without the casters, it's perfect as is. The wheels will only add about 3" of height to the table.

Now I finally have a place to put all my shit! Time for a Molson! :D

I was thinking about this yesterday, because I had another 6G72 cast crank from a Montero that spun 2 rod bearings so was trash...

One of those old cranks did weld to the brake rotor differently compared to the other, on the one table.
.. one was a forged crank and one was a cast crank
