So joining some old buddies of mine in a 16 team PPR fantasy league. Haven't played for several years, and honestly have only loosely kept up with professional football as a whole..As luck would have it..I got the top overall pick. Figured it'd be useful to get input from people who still do this/follow this, and of course to recount the experience through out.
At the moment, I am thinking I'll probably draft LeSean McCoy first overall. In a PPR league, and with Kelly's rapid fire run heavy offense, I expect him to get a lot of touches.
Since my second pick won't be for a while, I'm expecting (unfortunately) most of the top receivers will be off the boards, so I'm expecting to have to pick a mid-range receiver. Unfortunately it'll be too late to have any reasonable idea of who is left. I think I'm probably going to sandwich receivers (since I'll pick back to back) and may take a chance on Kelvin Benjamin with one of them. I'm a Panthers fan, but also he's Carolina's only decent receiver and expect Carolina to be playing from behind a lot this year anyhow so he should get a decent number of touches. Hopefully Roddy White or Cordarrelle Patterson will be available, two players I anticipate will have big years.
Going to wait to draft a QB unless there haven't been any taken by my fourth/fifth pick, then I *may* snag one if one of the top guys is left. There's actually a decent bit of depth there (after the top 3, the next 5 or 6 are grouped pretty close together), so thinking that maybe I might get lucky and snag an Andy Dalton or something later on. Don't want to be left with a scrub, but I don't want to go too early.
If I draft RB, WR, WR, WR, QB I think that I'll likely be pretty well situated for the season.

We did our draft last weekend. Having a 16 team draft is going to be rough when it comes to depth. We only did a 10 team draft this year. We had 12 last year but lost 3 guys from last year (only because they are pussies and couldn't handle losing) and picked up another to replace one of the 3.
Any way, I also had first pick and I also picked up Shady for the first pick. We are going with a 2 QB system this year so QB's aren't as valuable. With a 1 QB system you almost want to pick one up early, especially being that ALL 32 starting QB's are going to be drafted in your league.
If I were you I would definitely consider taking a QB in the 2nd/3rd round. Sure some of the top tier ones will already be gone after 30 other picks, but I wouldn't wait until 4th/5th round to do it.
My draft class is pretty solid I think. It really may come down to myself and the commish just like it did last year. Only problem is we are both in the same division this year so only one of us will be the 1 seed while the other will be a 3 at best.
My draft class by position is
QB Matt Stafford
QB Ben Roethlisberger
QB Joe Flacco
RB Lesean McCoy
RB Rashaad Jennings
RB Steven Jackson
RB Pierre Thomas
WR Brandon Marshall
WR Desean Jackson
WR Golden Tate
WR Terrence Williams
TE Vernon Davis
TE Martellus Bennett
K Nick Folk
K Robbie Gould
D Panthers
D Browns

League set up: QB, WR, WR, RB, RB, TE, W/T, K, DEF, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, IR, IR
Definitely puts a bit more emphasis on the QB position, primarily on the back up QB position since I suspect that'll decide a handful of games this year. Looks more and more like taking Shady first would be a wise move..Unfortunately, I work Sunday when the draft is occuring. May try to get someone to cover for me for a few hours so I can take off early.

Well fuck..They failed to mention that there were keepers in the league (which is kinda bullshit since over half of us didn't play last year)
Ended up taking Matt Forte #1. With 16 teams, the depth charts are god awful. I should've just sackedup and set up my team where all my players had the same week or two off, and just eaten the losses since depth is terrible all around.
As it sits:
QB: Russell Wilson
WR: Roddy White
WR: Cordarrelle Patterson
TE: Antonio Gates
W/T: Michael Crabtree
RB: Matt Forte
RB: LaGarrette Blound
Bench players:
WR: Riley Cooper
WR: Jerricho Cotchery
TE: Owen Daniels
RB: James White
QB: Kirk Cousins
Had to try to draft from my phone so I had no access to any real information on the players, 1 minute to make your pick and I was at work...So I also ended up with Justin Blackmon and Kendall Hunter :P Opps.
Forgot about Blackmon's suspension and didn't even know Hunter had gone on IR. On the desktop version of the league, it shows that Blackmon is out for the seasonand that Hunter is on IR...Didn't show anything on Mobile so I had to guess. I'll drop them first chance and grab some slouch to slot in there. If RG3 goes down with an injury (or plays poorly) I may be able to parlay Kirk Cousins into a decent choice later. Same with Riley Cooper. Might drop Cotchery and grab Robert Woods..I expect Buffalo to be playing from behind a lot and throwing the ball quite a bit.

Carolina (even though they're my team) is likely going to be awful this year. Lot of turnover on the o line, they've got a rookie WR stepping in to be a #1, I expect Newton to end up hurt at some point. Cotchery likely will see limited playing time with me unless Carolina is going against a team with terrible pass defense.
My football fantasy is that Suarez gets a lifetime ban.
They didn't give him one?

Truth.
Dropped Kendall Hunter and Justin Blackmon (since he's unlikely to play this year and I've got some depth at WR) put in a waiver wire claim for DuJuan Harris (GBs #2/3 RB, but they always get injured) and Dexter McCluster, but FAs have a freakin bid process. I don't really want to spend money trying to pull guys in. McCluster gives me another projected 4-5 points per week over Blount, but neither is a starter unfortunately. Depth of the league is such that I focused on grabbing WRs (Have 3 who are projected for 15+ points per week, and another 2 at 11+ points per week) and I'm just going to have to lean on Forte getting me reliable production and my receivers to go off and that LeVeon Bell gets injured or suspended or something.

Houston came up huge for me today, debated between playing them or New Orlean's D (which generated a lot of turnovers last year.)
NO netted -3 points in my league today, Houston gave me 41...That's a 44 point swing, unbelievable.
Even if Gates no shows tonight, should still walk away with a victory this week. If Gates has a big day, may try to trade him to snag a better #2 RB. Based on how Griffin played for Washington today, Cousins may get the nod soon, if so, I'll likely try to trade him to pick up a better #2. I'm giving up over 10 projected points a week to opponents. Can't count on having so many players go off and blow past their projected like I did this week, and I can't drag a guy only getting 4-5 points a week to success. Hopefully Crabtree gets better and becomes a bigger part of the offense for SF, otherwise may have to switch to Riley Cooper (who is pretty unreliable.)

41? What the hell kind of scoring is done for defense? Houston got 20 in my league. Where your opponent has the Jets with 13, they got 6 in my league.
Anyway, at this time I am down by 12 to this weeks opponent. I should still win though. I still have Matt Stafford, Rashad Jennings, and Golden Tate to play, where my opponent only has Larry Fitzgerald left. If Stafford can get 18, Jennings get 10 and Tate get 12 that should be able to overcome the deficit as well as whatever Fitz puts up. We will see though.

I *believe* that the scoring is supposed to be structured in such a way as to make a more accurate reflection of impact on a game, and level the playing field offensively but can't say for sure as I wasn't there when they came up with the scoring. Unfortunately the way that the points bonuses stack up, especially for QBs, is crazy..Matt Ryan had 58 point day in our league today. Julius Thomas is already up to 24 points today..Hadn't realized how big that shit was. So despite being up 60 points, that may not be safe. Although he is banking on Hilton going off at this point.
stealthee
09-07-2014, 09:53 PM
Wow some of those points structures are ridiculous, especially for defense.
In our league off the top of my head a sack is worth 1, a INT worth 2, Defensive TD 6, safety 2, no points for 3 and outs or 4th down stops. To me giving defensive points for that is just stupid.
sergechronos
09-07-2014, 09:58 PM
For most average defenses, you'll get about 10-15 out of them a week with this structure, putting them roughly on par with the average player.
Idk, I agree its a crazy points scheme. But its working for me.

That actually makes sense. It's a PPR league so he has 6 receptions, that's 6 points. 94 yards, that's 9 more points if one point per 10 yards, and 3 TD's is 18 points. That adds up to 33 points.
sergechronos
09-07-2014, 10:48 PM
Well, clinging to a 20 point lead now. So long as Thomas and Hilton don't take off in the 4th quarter, may still hang onto this. And of course, I have Gates playing tomorrow night. Thomas' efforts have definitely made the game significantly closer than I'd like.

Got 2 trade offers this morning:
Brian Hartline for Riley Cooper straight up
And
Brian Hartlin and Mark Ingram for Michael Crabtree and Isiah Crowell.
Not sure how I feel about either of those. Cooper in Philly's offense will be a stud later this year when playing against Washington's lackluster D and the abomination that is the Giants. Crabtree has potential, but playing 2 games against Seattle and Arizona (with the Legion of Boom in Seattle and Peterson in Zona) could be devastating as he is my usual flex. On the other hand, Ingram is a much better fantasy option than Crowell. But I have Forte and Forsett, so I'm pretty well covered for everything but my bye weeks (where I would have to plug in either Crowell, or LaGarrette Blount.)
Hard to say for sure as I think that Crabtree will likely have more explosive games than Hartline, and Ingram would really only be necessary for 2 weeks out of the season.
Forte's bye week is week 9, Ingram would face Carolina's D that week.Forsett's bye week would be week 11, Ingram would face Cincy's D that week..Given Carolina and Cincy both have very very good run defenses, kinda leaning towards rejecting it. Neither of those is likely to be big weeks for Ingram.

So after 2 weeks, this is where we stand. I'm on top in my division, and #1 overall (owing to points.)
Only the top 2 teams from each division go to the playoffs, so should be interesting. The North division is rather high scoring thus far compared to the others (the lowest scoring guy in our division would be #1 in any other division) and every one of our teams would have been undefeated if we were in different divisions...Oh well, if I can survive this division, would have me feeling good about the play offs..and therefore the $1000 first prize to the winner

Anticipating my first loss this weekend.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/majwoody/week3matchup_zps1c8b1004.jpg
Best case scenario is that Wilson plays well but throws to other Seattle receivers aside from Harvin, and that the Bears run the ball and play keep away from the Jets. Just don't like my individual match ups this weekend, or the handcuffs that I've got at the moment.
Jets have a good run defense though, so I'm expecting Cutler will get a lot of opportunities to throw and Forte may get shut down again. Patterson wasn't very effective last week with AP gone (a trend I'm worried may continue for the year). Roddy White has a hamstring injury and hasn't practiced all week, on top of traditionally not playing well against TB.
Short of rolling the dice and benching Wilson and White to start Cousins and some undecided W/T (bumping Crabtree up to WR) I just don't think I've got much to work with here. Hopefully Cousins and Henne play well for the next couple weeks (have to start one of them next weekend due to Seattle's bye week) and then I can trade at least one of them away.

My team utterly failed me this week. Matt Stafford, Shady McCoy, Brandon Marshall and the Carolina D got me a combined -1 points.... yes that is NEGATIVE 1 from 4 players. Carolina D had -7, Stafford 3, Shady 2, and Marshall 1. You can't win when 1/3 of your team gets you less than 0 points.
Of course I sat Roethlisberger too. Figured they hadn't played well and were playing a stout D so I couldn't keep him in and he outscored both my starting QB's combined.
I am 1-2. Hard to swallow when I only lost 2 games all of last year and I though I had a better team this year than I did last. It's a long season, I can still come back.
We are actually playing a secondary game too. Every week you pick one QB, one RB, and one WR. We use their total offensive yards and total them. At the end of the year the bottom half of the game are responsible for buying the food and stuff for a Superbowl party. You can only pick a player one time all year so you have to pick carefully. The only "big dogs" I have picked are Shady, Brees, and Calvin Johnson (picked all then week 1) and I am in 2nd overall currently after 3 weeks.
That one is going to get interesting as the season winds down and people start running out of better players to pick. LOL

My #1 overall team that was 3-0 has lost for the first time this season..To the 16th place team.
Cousins, Patterson, Gates and Crabtree all gave me less than their projections.
Forsette, White, Forte, Houston D all performed above projections, but my opponent this week had Asiata and Steve Smith, both whom just absolutely exploded (each scored over 30 points in my league.) Unless KC's D just completely implodes and Gronk doesn't play for NE on Monday night, I can't win.
I take minor solace in the fact that even with my absolute best possible line up I could've only picked up another 9 points, still not enough to make up the difference I lost bye.
If not for Cousins horrific Thursday night, I might've had a shot. Hopefully I can bounce back next week and if nothing else, both of the other undefeated teams are in danger of losing this week and I'd still be about 3rd place at 2-1 thanks to points.

Don't think anybody could've predicted that Shady would be awful this year. Such an odd year for RBs...Ray Rice and AP get benched/suspended/whatever the fuck for off the field stuff, Shady is off his game, so many other RBs dealing with injuries plus coaches using the backfield by committee approach.. Jennings is actually pretty studly this year, even if this week was off for him..Hell, Knile Davis has netted more yards this year than Shady AND Foster, would anybody have predicted that before the season started? Tumbling to my second straight loss, and second week in a row playing the team that ended up with the 2nd most points for the week.
Trying to trade Forsett for someone who doesn't have to share carries. Forsett has netted me a lot of points but is TD dependent.
Crabtree, Patterson and White all failed me miserably this week netting less than 10 points combined. I think White can still turn it around, if healthy, but I'm not very high on crabtree. I'm looking to trade him if possible. Gates is looking beastly at TE for me, and Daniels is a great flex as Flaccos security blanket near the end zone. Unfortunately until AP comes back, Patterson is a bust IMO. There's just no other threat for Minnesota to give Patterson. Space to work with.
I'm unlikely to get anything for Patterson, but Crabtree might be leveraged into a 15ppg receiver. Some slightly more steady production at wr would be huge as its been killing me lately.

My receiving corps (which I thought was going to be my strength) has been an absolute disappointment this year. Well, its been awhile since we have updated this thread. A few updates have been in the NFL thread and the latest post by serge there made me decide to post over here at the conclusion of Sunday night's game.
So I finished our regular season at a disappointing 5-7. I made the playoffs at a #6 seed. Last week was week 1 and I won that match 188-175 against last years champion/the commish. Week 1 was totally nuts where the 1, 2, and 3 seed all lost to the underdogs.
Week 2 pitted me at #6 versus #7 and #4 versus number #8.
The 4 versus 8 game is over with #4 winning 191-140.
My game started off poorly. I did not realize that DeSean Jackson was ruled out until it was too late. I was playing 10 players versus 11 players of my opponent. The ironic thing is when I played the same opponent in the regular season I only had 10 players just due to poor thinking on my part and being screwed by bye weeks. I still won that match.....
At this point I am winning the match 163-134. I have Steven Jackson left to play, while my opponent has Jordy Nelson.
While my win is not guaranteed I am breathing a little easier. If I beat him again with 10 players he is probably not going to be very happy.
What was even more ironic is the week after he lost to me with only 10 players, he won a game with only 10 players. Go figure.
As long as Jordy Nelson does not have an epic career game and Steven Jackson does at least something I will be in the championship game for the 2nd straight year (only second year in this league) facing the wife of the commish. She is a tough opponent and I would not be surprised if she wins it all.

Well, I'll update here for posterity sake..
I finished the season with the 2nd best record at 10-3, but ended up as the #5 seed since the #1 record was in my division.
First playoff game matched up again the #4 seed who went 7-5 in the regular season. While it should've been a cake walk for me, J.Stewart and the Rams defense both exploded this weekend for him for 34 and 58 points respectively. Unfortunately, unless Roddy White and Matt Bryant put up a metric fuckton of points and Mason Crosby does nothing, I will lose. Currently down 129-159.
At this point I am regretting not making the Roddy White trade. Eddie Royal hasn't been consistently stellar this season, but Jeffery has been better than White by a good bit and his 21 points this week would've been a nice boost (although not enough to make up the difference.)
What I can say though is that Owen Daniels and Antonio Gates sadly combined to be my two most productive receivers..My receiving corps, who I spent 3 of my first 4 picks on in the draft, turned out to be a complete bust. White missed several games this year (including games where ATL didn't scratch him until right before hand while I was at work and couldn't change it.) Patterson was a massive bust, which likely has quite a bit to do with APs suspension, but just didn't really do much for me this year. Michael Crabtree has been hampered by injuries all year, but has put up tolerable numbers. Snagged Forsett off the waiver wire after the Ray Rice suspension was the best move I made all year and likely saved my season. Next year I am going to try to request off the day of our draft. This year I kinda got screwed trying to get it done at work (in retail no less) so some of the players drafted weren't even playing this year.
After quite a bit of discussion within the league, some changes have been agreed to for next year:
1) They are changing the bonus points for QBs and defenses. QB scoring will be brought back down a bit. Defenses will earn a bit more points for a shutout and limited scoring (rewarding how rare it is in todays game) and they are getting rid of the bonus points for 3 and outs.
2) No keepers for next year. Almost half the league was new people this year (myself included) and kinda got boned by whoever owned our team last year if they had selected a shitty team and had nobody worth keeping. Draft order will be totally randomized (which likely won't make much difference for me.)
3) Team rosters are being cut down to a smaller size (bench goes from 8 to 4). This speeds up the draft, and leaves more good players on the waiver wire to pick up. With a 16 team league, if you had a player go down with injury, you were kinda fucked because there was rarely anyone worth picking up off the wire after the first 5 or 6 weeks.
4) You will no longer be able to keep the same player in consecutive years.
Is there a 3S league? Would be interesting if not.
I am sitting at #2 seed. First round bye this week and my team had a useless stellar week! 145pts and still have Cobb.
I am curious about other leagues though. Nearly all teams (12 total) in my league are only separated by 1-2 games. I was think this was due to how the NFL season has gone with 2 divs nearly all tied up. AFC North and NFC South. Has all yall's leagues been that close? To where I was at 8th place, and with one win and a tie I was in 2nd.

We did a 3s league a few years back but it didn't continue on.
The league I am in was sporadic with records. That might be attributed to how we were set up though.

There's talk of it every year, just seems to rarely work out.

As far as my league by division:
12-1, 10-3, 7-6, 2-11.
8-5, 8-5, 6-7, 3-10.
8-5, 7-6, 5-8, 4-9.
8-5, 7-6, 6-7, 3-10.
Pretty even for the most part, couple at the upper and lower end, but a lot right around the middle (which is usually how it happens in a 16 team league.) The real disturbing thing was the score disparity.
Most points for 2031.30 (for the team that went 12-1.) Least points for 1343.35 (team that went 2-11.) We had 3 teams between 1343 and 1380. Nobody else was over 1850 except that one team, next highest was 1827, 1810, 1787, 1761, 1758, 1736 then it hits the low 1600 and high 1500s for the other 6.
Most points against 1753.95 (1761.85 with another team right behind at 1753.) Fewest points against 1508. (1513, 1530, 1561 all close behind.)
Unfortunately my division was the highest scoring for (and against of course.) Ended up with 14 out of division losses (for reference, the other 3 divisions had 19, 20 and 20) so definitely tough sledding. Still can't believe I'm bout to lose to this damn scrub in the playoffs though.
Well who is really involved with it? Just the three of us? lol
here my leagues records by div (12 teams 2 div)
7-5-1(1281), 7-6(1294), 7-6(1060), 6-6-1(1253), 6-7(1246), 6-7(1233)
9-3-1(1535), 7-6(1424), 6-7(1343), 5-7-1(1095), 5-8(1232), 5-8(1181)
As you can see our league was pretty close throughout the full year. Im at 7-5-1, that tie saved my playoff hopes! I mean from my div, first and last place were only 1.5 games apart.

Well, Nelson made it closer than I would have liked, but I pulled out the victory 178-168. I can't believe I did it with being down 1 player and while my opponent had 2 WR score a combined 73 points (Nelson with 34 and AJ Green with 39). I also possibly lost points when Brandon Marshall left injured in the 2nd quarter.
Championship game is going to be tough.

Well, dropped the game. 151.61-174.60
Even without Crosby playing last night, he would've beaten me..Still..Just..FUCK.
I'm still in the battle for 3rd place, but it doesn't matter beyond bragging rights since there is no 3rd place money this season and draft order is randomized (otherwise I'd be intentionally tanking to try to get as high of a spot as possible.) JFC, still can't believe I got my ass handed to me by this scrub. I'm going to keep track of my scores just to see what would've happened if he hadn't gotten so damn lucky. I alternate between being relieved that it's done and say taht I don't care anymore, to being incredibly pissed to have gone out like this (literally only my opponent would've beaten me this week.)
Are you guys in a PPR league? Those are some high scores. My final (wasted) score was 165, and thats very high for my league. I fear I may be a 1 and done in the playoffs. Opponent's projected are pretty high with him having Manning. Looks like I will be a chargers' defense fan next week. lol

Ppr league, bonus points based on yardage for QBs, RBs and WRs. Defenses (this season) earn bonus points for 3rd down stops, as well as 4th down stops.

Well, going to win my consolation game. Currently pissed again though as I would've won this weeks matchup had I won last week. Of course the fluky motherfucker who beat came back down to reality. /rage

Championship game isn't pretty.
Score is currently 98 to 79 with me on the losing side. Shady is currently playing for me. He is getting carries, but not getting the TD's.
Tomorrow I will have Martellus Bennett and my opponent has Jay Cutler so I am probably screwed. Unless Shady does something huge tonight I am likely relegated to a second straight 2nd place finish.

Well, championship game ended up being the #6 vs #7 team..Unbelievable.
My rage has subsided slightly now as even if I made the championship, Forsett, White and Crabtree are all banged up. Unfortunately in the long run, the lack of a waiver wire to allow for picking up replacement WRs to replenish my depleted corps murdered me down the stretch. Leaning on Pitta and Gates to make up for Crabtree, White and Patterson, it is a miracle my team performed as well as they did (if they played every team every week, would've ended up with the 2nd best record (128-81.)
Not sure what I'll do for next year, doubtful Gates performs this well again. I likely won't take a chance on Patterson again either, he's very boom or bust. With everything being reset for next year at least, should be helpful. I may try to snag Wilson again, he's not the most glamorous QB but he is steady dependable points near the upper echelon of the league.
Brian, how did yours turn out? Jay Cutler wasn't so hot Monday night as I recall (just 12 points in my league.)

I lost with a pathetic score of 115 to 89. Easily the lowest scoring game of the year.
