View Full Version : Crank case ventilation setup

Since I started upping the boost on my car (currently running a maximum of 18 psi) I've noticed that the stock crank case ventilation doesn't seem to up to the task anymore judging by the increased amount of oil leaking from my oil fill cap.

I've read the various thread on this subject over the years and there is a lot of talk of various methods for improving the stock setup.

Those of you which are running more than stock boost, which crank case ventilation setup are you running and how is it working?

Given how late I am to the 3/S tuning game I figured there must already be at least a few true and tested solutions to this problem.

The PCV valve on the front valve cover in the stock setup scares me a bit. If that valve sticks open at full boost the results cannot be good...

I know the first step is usually move to the krank vet setup. It will hold better at higher than stock boost levels which is most likely where you are getting the pressure. If that doesn't help I would guess you have ring issues causing the pressure in which a leak-down test would be needed to confirm.

There was just a decent discussion on krank vents in my build thread.

There was a bunch of mixed thoughts and experiences with them. But in the end, I will be running the krank vents as I intended. If curious on the details, check out the last 2 or so pages in my build thread, the discussion was pretty good.

Something to add to the discussion from the other thread.

See the large vent in the top pic? Look how small the openings are in it compared to the one in the bottom pic.......yeah I wouldn't use the one on top. Probably the one TSB had issues out of.

Unlogic, are you starting to smoke under boost? You could replace the stock vent before doing anything else.

phew, luckily I have the ones in the second pic, tho the small crank vent doesn't have the arrow on it anymore so I will have to blow through it I guess to find it which way it flows...

For those that can't se the second image, it's the second image on this page. Jeff's site blocks image access sometimes so some will see it others will not. Once you go to his page it should show from then on.

I have not noticed any smoke just oil leaking from the oil filler cap so far.

The krank vents sold by 3SX seems to have small openings on the large valve: Krank Vents SystemÂ*-Â*Mitsubishi 3000GTÂ*/Â*Dodge Stealth Parts (http://www.3sx.com/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=895)

I've been unable to find the krank vent kit pictured at Stealth316 but I guess this version would work if I mount the valve with the small openings on the front valve cover and the one with the big openings on the rear one: The MINI kit (or CCVS) [MINI CCVS] - $110.00 : ET-Performance & Racing Products (http://www.et-performance.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=97) ...the only problem is that ET performance doesn't ship to Sweden :BangHead:

I sent an e-mail to ET performance but I haven't heard anything from them so far.

ET is the place to get them from. I want to say that is where matt m supplied them from back when he was selling them a lot. (maybe still does, idk) but yes, get those.

The ones pictured in there are the small ones. Try and contact matt (DR)

I have an idea I've been working on since I talked to Adam in the other thread. It won't be ready for a week or two though.

I need to check this as well. Pretty sure I had some leaking from the oil cap. I have pushed to 18-20 psi at times.

Also, I wouldn't worry too much yet. A lot of these cars leak from the cap. I've seen plenty of NA's do it.

Yeah, Especially the stock oil cap. Mine would leak from time to time running 14 psi on 9b's. I swapped it out with one of those aluminum ones you can find on eBay. I bent the inside lock tabs on the cao just slightly for a better seal and I haven't really seen the issue occur since. I would start with checking your oil cap/seal and look into an aftermarket one if you don't have one already. might just be a simple seal issue on your current oil caps.

The ones pictured on Dynamic Racing website seems to match those on Stealth316,. I'm going to send him an e-mail and see if he has any in stock:

This, please don't run out and buy Krank Vents. Put an extra gasket around the oil cap first.

Krank Vents pretty much suck

I personally ran the big one in the top pic. That gave me too much vacuum which blew out my dipstick at 16 psi. Throwing it out and running just the small one worked great to 32 psi.

The second pic looks like the set that was ran on a friend's VR-4. I remember the big krank vent barbs being much longer than mine. The big krank vent caused a 250 rpm drop at idle and also lowered the oil pressure 9 psi. You could barely get the oil cap off because it was sucking that much vacuum about -24 in-hg. This was also used in conjunction with a catch can. Ditching the big krank vent yet again made the car run normal and not leak oil out of the cap or blow the dipstick at pump gas levels on TD04s.

I would just run an upgraded check valve in place of the OEM PCV valve. You can use a brake booster check valve or something from McMaster Carr. McMaster-Carr (http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-check-valves/=tdbnnj) Something like that with fittings or barbs.

or run it with the stock valve. Like somebody said in the other thread if the valve flows too much it can suck oil into the intake manifold.

I have a brand new mini CCVS kit from ET-Performance... if your willing to pay $55 + shipping its yours

And im not sure why there is some crank vent hate here, ive been running them without issue.

I wish that I had seen that post a bit earlier cause I just ordered the mini krank vents after being unable to find any metal valves locally. All local shops only carried flimsy plastic ones...

I guess since the stock valve is going to bleed air it wouldn't matter. I would just replace the stock one with a barb if you were going to run a beefier check valve.

If you buy the mini KV set that Matt sells, you can't go wrong. Matt sells only items that actually work and that he uses. Good enough for 8-sec, good enough for the rest of us.

I run the front KV only based on info from Matt. I don't use the car enough to warrant a catch can, but do have one waiting to install if I decide to. If you really want a 100% setup I have read front KV only and a catch can for each valve cover.

Front would be cover (barbed fitting) to catch can to KV to lower intake.
Rear would be cover to can to bubble (if you still use it).

My current can-less setup seems to be working and I don't have to worry about over-boosting the OEM PCV capability. PM Matt, he'll set you up.

Figured I'd throw out what I'm running PCV setup wise since its slightly different than most...

Barb fitting in front valve cover - no stock PCV
Small Krank Vent (to lower manifold)
Dual Adjustable PCV (have an idle and a cruise suck setting) with 3/8" barbs on both ends
Small Moroso Air/Oil Separator (t'd to each valve cover on pass side 3/8" - vacuum catch can)
Large Moroso Air/Oil Separator (t'd to each valve cover on driver side 1/2" - boost catch can)
*Used the Large Krank vent as replacement for clutch and brake booster check lines ;)

If the single large can doesn't flow well enough I'll probably just add a 2nd large can and have two separate lines off the valve covers, and also add a breather line to the front pre turbo pipe. If the flow changes at all due two having two breathers vs just one, adjusting the PCV will fix it and help keep that airflow to the lower intake manifold consistent.

I ended up putting the oem pcv back in, but also keeping the front KV as well since it will hold more boost. I was smoking at start up and under vacuum while driving. Wife could tell every time I used the clutch following me home from work. The start up oil smoke was gone within 4 startups. After doing 120K and having some oil puff at start up I was really getting nervous. Glad it was simple and free this time!
