I was making a post in a thread as as soon as I submitted AVG stopped a threat. It was a gif. that the threat was coming from. After that the site went screwy so I ran a virus scan to double check everything. By the time I came back you had it shut down fixing it.

Yeah I got IE and dark theme. Its not a huge deal as the games still work. I just wanted to make you aware of the issue at hand.
that is not cool, but... I'm using linux mint and "never" worry about that kind of stuff.

Before anybody gets too upset, realize that sometimes issues happen on the server end that Alan couldn't have planned for, or prevented.
A couple years back my website had obfuscated javascript injected into all HTML and PHP files, even those that were never world-readable. It turns out that Servage (the company hosting my site) had a worm on their end, and there was nothing I could do about it.

The key when this happens is to react to it. Thats why I turned the site off for most of the afternoon.

You guys need to switch to Chrome or Firefox and use ad blockers. I'm using chrome and still get the sponsor banners for the site but don't get other things that can harbor virus'.

alan I think its funny that the mass's made a huge deal about a virus (and they should of) but it happens on LOTS of forums. I am not being a tool and I ment no disrespect other then I found it ironic. You have to see that.

Not one person said only 3si gets viruses. Everyone was pissed that AF bitched at Alan for putting the site into default mode. Alan did the right thing by trying to protect the users from further attacks. AF was the assholes.
I am not debating that alan did the right thing, aka the no disrespect, just find it that a virus was in a sense the catalyst and then 3sgto gets on as well. Did I say anything about alan doing a bad job? Did I say AF is bad ass? You all can try to derail it more off topic if you want but all I was saying was I found it ironic.

Ummm, yeah. When was the virus the issue and not the handling of the situation? That's what it was from the get-go, how AF handled themselves, which was about as well as a 15 year old girl handles alcohol on her birthday.

I know virus' are everywhere, but I'd be willing to bet (with good odds) this was a 3SI attack against 3sgto to defame and sway members from crossing over to the LIGHT SIDE of the force. ;)

IP traces back to Latvia and looking at it look like another site on the host(someone running word press) got infected and it spread across the site because we all run from the same copy of PHP. It seems to be a new variant of an attack and I've found several references of sites getting hit over the last few weeks.

Yes, Linux doesn't have many viruses vulnerabilities, but it's not because it's secure. It's because it has almost no market share. Why write a virus for it when the windows share is 25x larger, and has the most computer-incompetent users too? Lots of windows security issues are because everyone runs as an admin all the time, installs 900 tool bars, and clicks anything that has flashing colors. ;)
It has lots of hardware issues, the software updates almost never work without breaking a custom config, and it's an absolute pain the rear to work with sometimes, even on basic things. You have to be darn smart to use it daily. I've used computers for 20 years, starting with MS DOS 3.3, I've done network admin and software development for 10 years, and Linux STILL pisses me off quite often with occasional use (I've tried Fedora, Mint, SUSE, Gentoo, Ubuntu).
Linux is the TT 3S of the Desktop OS world. :D

Agreed. The "F the users! Leave the ads on!" attitude was the issue. Figure, out of say 5,000 members on 3Si, on the high side, maybe 50 got the virus. That's 1% ... hardly enough to cause a mass exodus.

DX3 will be released in Feb 2011 (Finally). What will hopefully be the deserving sequel to one of the best computer games ever.
And on the note of viruses, if you ever get any kind of computer infection (or suspect you have one), please PM me & we can start a thread. I can help you out, it is part of what I do for a living. I've helped a couple people on 3SI before and am more than willing to lend a hand with getting your computers running nicely again.

because it was first and foremost a PC game. and i've seen enough crappy "console developed" fps's that it's time people started voicing that they want QUALITY gaming back in their shooters; not just atari-esque, fast-as-you-can-churn-it-out, repetitive bloatware that does nothing to improve the genre.
p.s.
COD: black ops should at least have armor/hitpoints unevenly distributed between coalition & op for--the good guys wear body armor, after all. of course, that wouldn't make a fun game, if one team was always waxing the floor with the other... just another example of why i prefer ut3 > war shooters.

Hah I do like the COD games, but they do need work. I have so much stuff I would do to a video game but I know it would take a ton of time programming. Such as hit points to the head compared to arms, legs, vital organs. And then if you get hit in the arm you wouldnt be able to use it :D.
