I find it very selfish for someone to take their own life. No regard for the others that care for you, family, friends and even fans in this case.

I honestly think he has sucked for years and he has been accused of ripping off young acts. I was a big fan of Mork and Mindy when I was a kid.

It's a sad end but I can't help but think about people that really suffer and keep going on.

One of the few comedians that was funny, and good in serious roles. I really liked a lot of his work.

People all have struggles, I don't think it really matters in the grand scheme of things what they are, only that we experience them.

News like this always gives pause, but never really surprises, coming as it does from the world of entertainment.

Talent and melancholy seem to go hand-in-hand; we can only wonder which is the cart and which is the horse, I guess.

I lost my fascination with his comedy years ago, but I can't say he was incapable of entertaining me - I found most of the movie roles he had that weren't 'Robin Williams vehicles' to be pretty solid; Awakenings and Good Will Hunting come to mind.

I remember his very first appearance on HBO ("Look! The moon like a testicle hangs low in the sky...") as one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

I think I'll miss him a bit.

RIP, Chief.

Don't forget Dead Poet's Society. Another role he just absolutely nailed as a serious role. He was also pretty hysterical when he would appear on Whose Line Is It Anyway.

I would venture that those who are the funniest, or at least try to be, generally are the ones with the most demons. Robin relapsing into alcoholism a few years ago was likely a big indicator that something was wrong.

The world is worse off without him. Regardless of how good of a comedian he was or how good his movies were, the consistent theme is that he was a genuinely great person.

The fact that he did stuff like this is just a bonus (NSFW Language):

I take it that you meant "great" in the sense he was a good person, and he surely was that, Levi.

It seems those people tend to leave us ahead of schedule as well.

I will say however that after a celebrity suicide, overall suicide rates trend upwards. If someone you know is struggling with depression, try to be there for them. Don't ask them why they're depressed (often they don't know) just try to understand the general feeling that they're going through and just be there for them to talk to or hang with.

I am a big kid at heart and the role that always comes to mind for Robin Williams dramadies is Jack. I love that movie and he fit the role perfectly.

As for depression, I have my own battles with it. The big difference with me though is I don't have a substance addiction to try to drown out the depression. I deal with it in other ways.

It is definitely a sad time. I hope his family/friends has a lot of support in these tough times.

Robin Williams' daughter quits social media after abuse - CNN.com (http://www.cnn.com/2014/08/13/tech/social-media/zelda-williams-twitter/)

Zelda Williams abandoned her Twitter and Instagram accounts Tuesday after saying at least two people were sending her Photoshopped images of her father's dead body and other disturbing messages -- some blaming her for father's death.

"I'm sorry. I should've risen above," she wrote in her final tweet. "Deleting this from my devices for a good long time, maybe forever. Time will tell. Goodbye."
The episode proves that, with the anonymity of the Internet, some people will be horrible no matter the situation.

Earlier, Williams, 25, had asked her followers to report the abusive accounts to Twitter, but said they appeared to be creating new accounts after being banned by the site. She later deleted her request, which called the abusive messages "cruel and unnecessary."

WTF? Fucking shitlord punks...

it's something like 80% of suicides are by men and it goes up around ages 50-60 or something like that. I'd look it up but the way things have been at work lately I don't want to raise any red flags.

I may be alone on this, but I don't think the problem is temporary. To me, the problem is the US of A, and where it's headed--and that's not a temporary thing. And, despite all the wonderful things elsewhere in the world, it's not going to get much better anywhere else.

What I'm saying is, depression--as it exists for me personally--is a function of what I see in my environment. It's less of a "woe is me" thing...than it is a "HTF did everything in the world get so WTF?" At a certain point, it breaches annoying, passes frustrating and proceeds directly into horribly depressing. That is the end culmination of seeing remarkably unqualified individuals with little/no redeeming personal characteristics...achieve success ahead of (or in spite of) peers who are unilaterally more deserving and qualified.

I could opine on any of a half dozen different topics that all point to one depressing conclusion--but it's irrelevant to the idea. The gist is that while it is sad that some people can't see past "personal" problems, I--conversely--completely understand people who literally mean they don't want to live on this planet anymore.

This is much closer to disgust, than depression.

This is empathy.

Overall, it's quite unclear how/why you're attempting to daisy chain these opinions as relevant to this thread. There's a substantial difference in depressing and (clinical) depression.

Unless you WERE some other, depressed individual, you can't know the reasons behind said depression 100% factually. While there may be a difference, as you pointed out, it can be one of the factors that keeps said individual's "picture" painted bleakly.

As a for-instance, minor shit that's broken/malfunctioning on my car (like a sticky switch or something) doesn't bother me too much when the car is up and running fine. When the car is kaputt, that shit REALLY bothers me, and holistically makes me contemplate the value in keeping the car around.

That is NOT (clinical) depression.

Depression (major depression) Definition - Diseases and Conditions - Mayo Clinic (http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/depression/basics/definition/con-20032977)

Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depression, major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and depression may make you feel as if life isn't worth living.

More than just a bout of the blues, depression isn't a weakness, nor is it something that you can simply "snap out" of. Depression may require long-term treatment.

Someone can suffer from chronic depression without actually having "clinical" depression--but that's splitting hairs.

I do believe that environment can exacerbate a situation. I'm sure having his show cancelled didn't help.

Robin Williams? diagnosis: What is Lewy Body dementia? | Fox News (http://www.foxnews.com/health/2014/11/12/robin-williams-diagnosis-what-is-lewy-body-dementia/?intcmp=features)

I've had two friends go down the Parkinson's/Lewy Body Dementia path; both are deceased.

LBD is an absolutely horrifying diagnosis, and agonizing to watch - I don't wonder why he did what he did.
