It was flying from Amsterdam to Malaysia. There are some early,UNCONFIRMED reports that it was shot down.A horrendous year for Malaysian Airlines.

UPDATE 2: This website (http://itar-tass.com/mezhdunarodnaya-panorama/1325017) claims that a separatist group said that it shot down a Ukrainian transport plane shortly after MH17 went down.Here is the English translation:
Militias proclaimed the People's Republic of Donetsk (DNI) near the town of Torez downed military transport aircraft An-26 Ukrainian Air Force. This is reported by witnesses from the scene.
