View Full Version : This oughta be kinda entertaining
My BIL just bought his wife this '96 600SL; 35K miles, freshly serviced, for $15K.
I told her she'd love it until it needs any sort of attention at all, and to pick up a few For Sale signs, just in case.
It IS pretty, though:

I suppose they expect you to work on it for them...?
Do they even have a clue what they've gotten into?
It is a very nice car, but I'm not sure a new one wouldn't be cheaper in the long run....

I'm at the edge of the earth, they're in Arkansas - they'd better have their own guy lined-up. :D
I honestly have no idea what possessed him to do this - as you suggest, he hasn't the first clue what he's gotten into.

They actually are not that bad of cars, just make sure to have a slush fund for stuff that breaks. They major things that I see are oil sludging, water leaking through mirrors, ABS/TCS issues, and any various small issues with the V12 engine itself and the Merc transmission...
=I would have spent 5 grand extra and gotten a 2005 SLK 55 AMG. Or even a 2001 SL 600 (the new style); both can be had for ~20 large. Or R170 SLK 32 AMG's can be had for ~12-15 large.
The way this supposedly happened was they went to this place to view a certain Merc; she didn't like it, turned to point at this car (which was up in the air for fluid service), and said, "Now, if THAT was for sale..."
Well, of course, it WAS for sale, so.
EDIT:
Thadd, they don't know what an AMG is. :p
Sounds like they should have bought a BMW.

Heh. :)
I guess I shouldn't hate too much. The clueless people are the ones who buy the lower-end models so the educated can buy AMG's.
But on that note, I bet there isn't a question about what "Mopar" or "SVT" stands for.
Well, let's just say the last couple of times I've visited them, I've re-wired his boat-trailer, hung a door, and installed a dishwasher. :)
He isn't...handy.
She is just a tiny person.
Not really sure how big their wallet is, but considering they relocated out of a fairly nice place in Chicago to Mountain Home, Arkansas...who's to say? :p
If she's THAT tiny, she'd really fit well in an SLK.
She's 4'5".

With 35k miles...
Still more than I'd pay as you're into newer body style, AMG at that, territory near that figure.

That's what I'm saying. R171 AMG's are going for 20 grand--maybe less. R230 AMG's are considerably more, but an SL600 can be had for roughly the same price as a R171 AMG.
Well, I'd certainly have advised against it had I been on the scene.
Had a guy I worked with offer me an '04 MB 500SL with the 5.0 for 16K last year.
That car was pretty, too.
That would have been a better choice.
Already have the Stealth, though...
