Looking for 550 HP or better. Attempting completion before Son Ryan get home from Afghanistan.
Coming home present.

Keeping the rotary, or doing the LSx swap?

He said much bigger power adders, not bigger displacement, so I'm guessing (and hoping) he's keeping the rotary and boosting it a bunch. I love to see Rotaries making serious power.

My son Ryan has a build post going on. It is on one of the Mazda forums.
I will post a link to it shortly. All the upgrade mods from years earlier have been for the most removed and sold.
The 7 was making around 350 at the wheels. was fun, but not crazy. WE are going for crazy. Engine bay and chassis currently look like shit. Interior is done.
Much bigger turbo, huge inter cooler, custom lower runners, headers, 90 mm throttle body, meth injection new engine management and
well a list to long to post. Engine bay will be void of most all now visible wiring.

Way cool! And will definitely be following this. I read his build thread and he seems like a really nice kid who deserves a really nice car.

It was Ryan that got me started with 3S. He was Ryan3s on the 3si forum years ago.
He had goals of a bad ass NA. He built the car we race. He joined the Army and asked me to take his place on the forum.
And as a gift to him I finished all the R&D he started. We still produce more HP per liter than any other 3000. Evan 3SX's, And do it at 10.1 to 1 comp.
He moved on the the Mazda world when stationed in Alaska. He started with a bad ass speed 3, and managed to acquire an RX8.
We raced those cars together in Alaska. The RX8 was sold shortly after. He than found this FD and the rest of the story is on the RX7 forum.
Ryan has deployed many times. Blown up once and shot at many times. He is vary well decorated for his accomplishments.
When in full dress, his jump boots carry Calvary Silver spurs.
Vary proud of what he does for his country.
So this is what I do for him.

OK yeah I met him at the road course I believe, just briefly. You have a right to be proud of him and he definitely deserves this build. Looking forward to seeing it finished. I love rx7’s, I have an old vert right now.

Bad move on the 4.44's with what should be a low/mid 500rwhp car. I would have done the auto 3.90 rear. I'm making 350rwhp now and 4.44's would be a great match, but another 200 and it'll be a spin fest into 4th gear. It'll be much better off boost, but its an awfully tall gear for that much power.

What rear diff? The carbonetics carbon is very very quiet. The stock diff will not handle much more than 350 before it breaks.

Our rear tires are 275/40-17. At 1.5 inches taller than stock, I believe the 4.44 fit the bill just fine.

JasonY
08-07-2014, 07:11 AM
I have the same tire. You effectively have a stock car with a 4.3 rear. Which isnt a "bad" thing, but still too tall for twice the stock whp.

Regardless, what diff did you guys pick?

Jason

GTwizard
08-07-2014, 08:15 AM
Not really sure. The rear was set up by Chris at Performance Rotary in Garland Texas.
He could not get the 4:10 or 4;30 gears. So we went with the RX8 gear set up.
The diff is a torque biasing mechanical. But could not tell you what brand.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Ryan several times. He is as fine of a young man as you will ever meet. I certainly appreciate his service.

Ryan will be tickled to see the results of this build. I look forward to seeing progress pictures as well as Ryan in the near future.

Here are a few more pics. These cars never had a trans cross member. So we have added 1 and also added a rear diff stiffener as well.
These help the torque arm from getting twisted and flexing under torque.
Drive shaft is clear coated along with everything else.

Did you take a hole saw to the rear or is that factory?

GTwizard
08-07-2014, 04:37 PM
It's all factory. In fact, the rear end so weightless I have considered an AWD mod for my NA with it.
This entire set up is about 1/4 that of a VR4 rear set up. LOL.

familyMAN
08-07-2014, 09:13 PM
Hole saw could be a good/cheap way to lighten a 3S rear subframe without going tube frame:D Seemed damned heavy when I had it out last time.

GTwizard
08-07-2014, 10:37 PM
I have had so many VR4 rear sub frames out I would never even consider it for any of my needs.
It is really simple, I hate weight. LOL. That is the biggest reason I never built a VR4 for my self.

I have never met you Mr. Wizard, but you have just become my new best friend :)

The project is a great thing, but the love that you have for your son is BEAUTIFUL!

I am the father of 3 boys (all over 21), and I try to do all I can for them.

You sir, are an inspiration...

Here is a couple of pics of the fuel system. I most times do a sumped tank. But do to space reasons decided to do a fuel surge tank set up.
So here is what we did. This is fuel pump, surge tank, pre and after filters, Meth tank, meth pump, and battery all in the trunk.

Here is a few more space saving ideas. The new ECU was just a little larger than stock.
So I added a shit load more stuff to it. Mounted everything on a fold down panel for service. The rear of the panel has boost solenoid, boost sensor for LC2 wide band, AEM meth control and all the vacuum lines and crap the would have been under the hood. This ECU has a built in 4 bar map as well. So it needed vacuum down there anyways. The original ECU pocket was used for extra line storage as all this stuff come with more length of cable than anyone would ever need.

Wow..330rwhp at 16psi..lol Im making 350 at 14 tapering to 13psi on stock twins from the 99+ cars which make about 10% less peak power than the US turbos and doing it while being all stock location hardware which is hurting me pretty badly at this power level numbers wise.

It's a rotary. Low numbers are expected. All the energy created is turned in to noise :p But seriously. Awesome work. Very high quality. Shame about the numbers.
