Same turbos. I made a special request to Matt and he made it happen. They were EXPENSIVE but, I have been wanting to go this route for a while.

I believe the others would have made 700 on the dyno as these surely will but, they just never got a second chance.

More goodies.

New crankshaft as the old one isn't as straight as it used to be.

Main studs to hold the bottom from falling out.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr316/jjd222002/IMAG1779_zpsc6f14e68.jpg

More powa capabilty in the form of new bumpsticks from Crower. The mild 264's.

I have new turbo oil feeds and returns and the engine rebuild kit is here along with new OE headbolts. There are a bunch of other goodies coming but these are the items I have so far.

The new crankshaft will have a new home to go in as I believe I scored the last virgin 6G72 bare block in existance via the fantastic service from Mike over at Cherry Hill. The old block hasn't been condemned yet but, once my finances get a little better I will ship it off to Ray for checking/line boring or final condemnation. There were issues I saw that weren't to my liking and after many conversations with Ray, this is my best option.

Everything is on hold right now because the rods are not currently available. I'll update more when I have more to tell.

Lag is a shift away from fun.

IIRC Matt was discussing them one time in a thread on 3si and I'm pretty sure he said they were 2mm larger than the 19T compressor. 51mm is sticking in my head for some reason.

The turbine should be the same as the HL.

In case anyone didn't get my sarcasm...lag comment was a joke:D

With an extra 2mm they would be closer to 59-60mm on exducer. From stealth 316, 19ts are almost exactly the same size inducer/exducer on comp wheel as my 14bs. 2mm more would put them around small 16g size on exducer but bigger on the inducer if the 750's are larger than 19t.

Not that it matters. Just curious. I don't think there is anyway I could get 700whp out of my turbos (without some giggle juice) and wanted to see how far off on sizing I am.

LMFAO. She knows about all the parts as she see's the pile growing. She is just unaware of the level of expense. She has an idea but, the block and turbo expense blew my budget completely. I could have gotten Greg's motor and rebuilt the turbos for about the same but once I committed to this path I had to follow through. I also plan to take it to the NG and she understands the expedited nature of this build. I am also putting nothing but the best in it this time as there was wear on some items that I didn't like so literally EVERYTHING in the bottom end will be new. The heads are being cleaned by me with the lifters being replaced and you all have already seen the cams.

Had the NG not been in my home state; I probably wouldn't worry about it as much but, this is a vacation my wife and I will not miss as we get to drop the kids off with their grandparents and we get to act like teenagers again. I can't wait to put my mom behind the wheel of 600+AWHP and see the reaction. She was visiting last year before the NG and I had blown a meth line causing a serious lack of power the last time she rode in it ~450WHP. This year will be way different.

Edit: I found where TSB seems to know the sizes of the compressor 47mm inducer and 58mm exducer. Obviously, my original thoughts from memory were a bit off.

I don't think he ever gave the full specs on the turbos since it's a "trade secret." The compressor inducer is 47mm for sure same size as a 20T wheel. He didn't go bigger than that due to longevity issues with the turbos coming apart which I have a feeling was why my MTC turbos did the same thing given the bigger compressor/turbine mismatch. I don't see the compressor wheel exducer being bigger than 58mm. It's not like it matters much. The 9 blade TD04HL hotside is where the real gains are at. I loved mine and went back with them again because the top end is a huge improvement over the 12 blade HL standard turbine. It can keep up with the compressor wheel and doesn't really hurt spool. I saw positive boost by 2200 rpms and 32 psi by 3300.

Baby steps but progress is once again being made. The heads are clean. After many baths in soapy water, using pipe cleaners through all the oil galleys, and some time with a dremel and SOS pads they are looking good. I am going to check the valves for a good seal and lap if neccesary tomorrow and hopefully have them fully assembled by the end of the week. The before pics are raunchy at best as I deleted them from my phone and found that they are still there and can only be accessed in thumbnail format. No biggie, you get the idea though.

They aren't perfect but, I'm happy with the result. I wasn't going to mess with the valve guides so some carbon had to be overlooked.

Ray came through with the rods and I goofed pretty badly by waiting for the rods before I bought pistons. If Ray couldn't get me the rods in time I was going to go with his pistons as there is a lead time involved. If he could, I was going to get the same 3SX pistons that were in it the last time as they were off the shelf items before and I called to verify they had them in stock. The day Ray called to tell me the rods were in I called 3SX to order the pistons and they were out of stock with a month of lead time. I called Ray back and had him make me a set of his and I am waiting for probably another 2 weeks for them to be done. Once I get them I will thrash to get this thing together and hopefully the car can make the NG.

The oil pan is taking a bath right now as it has already had quite a bit of solvent through it. The bearing material hides in places you can't see and you have to get creative to get it all out. It'll be done later today.

The new crank and flywheel are cleaned of the cosmeline and the new block is next for cleaning.

The porting was done by IPS years ago along with the oversized valves. I simply knocked the carbon off exposing their work. That is the big difference from DR's head work and IPS's; the cnc machining marks are not removed from IPS.

This doesn't seem to be a terrible thing though as they make good power. Turbo reversion is the only reversion I am concerned with and hopefully the recent changes will help in that department.

Thanks boosted.

More progress made today.

The oil pan is clean finally.

All the valves carbon buildup has been removed. The exhaust valves will require lapping. I'll get that done tomorrow along with head assembly.

All valvetrain parts have been cleaned. I couldn't believe the amount of material that came from the rocker arms. It's been said before and I'll reinforce it again, that shit goes everywhere.

Methanol testing is complete. I'll put up some pictures a little later as the methanol test results are pretty cool. For now I'll say there was a restriction in the 1/4" compression fittings on my setup. That problem will be fixed.

Still need lapped but, looking good.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr316/jjd222002/IMAG1845_zps3a5e6e24.jpg

The methanol tests were done with 3/8" compression feeding the system instead of 1/4" compression. Bottom line on the tub was the system's old flow rate with 1/4" compression feeding it and a best of 1675ml/min. It typically averages 1625ml/min with this arrangement. The middle line was the lowest tested value with just a 3/8" compression feed added to the existing system at a flow rate of 1800ml/min. It averaged out to 1800ml/min over 3 tests with a best of 1850ml/min. The top line was with a 375ml/min nozzle added which bested 1975ml/min and averaged 1960ml/min.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr316/jjd222002/IMAG1848_zps328591fc.jpg

I think there were variations in the tests because the battery charger that was hooked up was moving the voltage around going from charge mode (~13.2VDC loaded) to maintain mode (~12.5VDC loaded) That's why I ran multiple tests with each setup because there were typically 50-75ml/min differences between tests. It could have also been my start and stop timing but averaging the results got me the answer I was looking for.

I'm going to move the pump to the engine bay and effectively run the setup that produced the middle line on the bucket with 2 nozzles and a 3/8" feeder to the pump. This should give me the boost I was looking for when going >25psi with minimal cost. If it doesn't, I'll add the third nozzle and really bump the flow of the system. The good news is that I found the bottleneck of this sytem and proved a cost effective solution to overcoming it.

Jeff

CoopKill

So what size nozzles are you to be running again?

kywhitelightning
05-08-2014, 05:17 PM
2 Devil"s Own DO14's. They are rated at 882ml/min at 100psi. The third nozzle was a snow 375ml/min rated at 60psi. I mention the rating psi because it makes a difference when you run 100+psi. The snows will outperform their rating and the Devil's Own will be right on target or slightly above depending on line pressure.

I don't recommend running much more than what I have bench tested with because they aren't seeing boost and the gains are diminishing. I figure the system is near it's limits to maintain good atomization (pump wise). That is the main reason I don't want to jump right into the 3 nozzle setup. If I feel I am still lacking in the methanol department once reassembled, I will add it and give feedback. For now, I'm gonna call it a cheap fix.

Jeff

CoopKill

Nice, I should be more than safe with what my snow 100cc/min x6 will flow then. Would you suggest going with the 3/8" feed with this setup as well?

mb3000
05-09-2014, 01:05 AM
I spoke to Devilsown and they said the limit of a single pump (their pump, and allowing for proper atomization) was roughly 32gph out of the nozzles for a diesel application (higher boost) so our lower (relatively) boost pressures should be able to get away with a little bit more.

kywhitelightning

Are you using compression style fittings, AN fittings, or the push on type? The 1/4" compression fitting's ferrule reduces the opening and that is the reason I upgraded the feed. The outlet of the pump has a 3/8" tee that reduces into two 1/4" feeds. AN and push on type connections have better flow capabilities as the oriface isn't reduced. Actual flow testing will be THE way to tell as the pumps, while rated at 300psi, certainly drop pressure as flow increases. They flow 1gal/min with no restriction. My system flows near half that and adding more flow only drops the pressure the system creates as the flow just isn't there to support the pressure. Once pressure drops, atomization drops. I figure my system to be running near 105psi with the feed fixed. Prior to that, the flow testing suggested ~85psi. This is with the pumps regulator 1/4 turn off max. Pull 28psi away from that because of the boosted intake and the pressure should drop below 60psi which isn't good. Even though Devil's Own advertises atomization down to 40psi, I don't want to risk running liquid into the combustion chamber.

At 1800ml/min my setup will be at 28.5gph. At 1960ml/min with the 3rd nozzle it will be at 31.1gph. Like I said before, it'll be close to the limits. Thanks a bunch for this information as it reinforces my theory of the system being near maxed.

I haven't crunched the numbers, but I wonder at what point a fuel pump might work better.

kywhitelightning
05-09-2014, 03:47 PM
I would think flow would not be the concern. The high pressure would be the killer of something like a Walbro. Most fuel injection pumps have bypass at 85psi. The methanol pumps run way more pressure than that all the time.

My Aeromotive Stealth pumps 1.5gpm. MB has posted where the new Walbro's can out do that. The Devil's Own pump can only do 1gpm. Flow wouldn't be a problem at all.

Good progress!

So what are you planning on changing from last build/tune to keep it alive?

New parts!!!! After many conversations with Ray, what happened to mine is the result of YEARS of abuse to include a bent connecting rod on #3 a few years back. Plus the fact that it was always on kill (There was knock, I'm not gonna lie. The pistons this go around looked flawless on the face.). The crank had 138000 miles on it. He said they crack. Then they bend. It is common with high HP. Call it the entry fee for big power.

I bought 21psi wg actuator springs to lock me at that boost on pump gas. I plan to only turn the bc on when running race gas. They were installed today!!

I also pulled the timing map back a little and called it my pump gas map. The race gas map is what I used before and it will stay untouched.

At the end of the day, on a regular basis I will excersise more caution and, on occation, I will throw caution to the wind and chase that big number (700;)).

Edit: I have also put the meth injection system on steroids. Testing netted over a 15% improvement in flow. I still have to test it with it fully installed but, I'm pretty sure the numbers will still be there. More octane and more cooling all the time.

It is kinda sad, you add forged pistons and rods and the crank fails at the same point the stock rods have been pushed to anyway. I guess mitsu built a pretty well designed engine, all the parts fail at the same time if the tune is clean and the engine is fresh. I'm hoping I have a little more strength in the 74 crank, but then again maybe my wrist pins will get beat up.

Hoping to make good progress tonight and possibly test the new meth setup fully installed.

Most of the topside is done. Still have some work to do underneath though.

Oil pressure is fantastic. Have a coolant leak to addresss, the hood to put on and the splash guards to install yet. I plan on driving it some today.

I also recently picked this combo up.

Breaking news..... The methanol system is fixed and the first pull managed to produce 450HP and 400TQ according to virtual dyno. I need to get with Matt about setting these gates up as it only managed to hold 17psi.

Then I turned on the bc. 606HP and 531TQ at 23psi. I can't load the graphs now because my computer has the logs and cannot access the internet at my parents house. This is still on pump + meth. The c16 is sitting outside and probably won't be added until I get back to GA.

did you set and balance them with a hand pump installed on the turbos? What PSI did you set them to with the hand pump? (what psi were you at once they even budged AT ALL?). Remember there is back pressure in the exhaust helping them open on the car that's not there when your setting them on the bench. In most cases you need to set the pre-load 2-3psi higher on the bench then you want them to open on the car. So if you want 20psi base pressure you need to set them with 23psi pre-load on the bench. That's 23psi were they move AT ALL, not full open. Also note they both must open at the EXACT same psi, if not you will have one turbo doing way more work then the other and power will be lower and you will overspeed and kill that turbo.

They moved at 22psi on the bench. They moved at the exact same time. They were off the car sitting side by side on a table.

Strange that there opening 5psi lower on the car. The hand pump gauge could be off, there not exactly a precision tool lol But the higher you go the more back pressure your going to have on the car.... You may just want to try it from were you are at. Ray only has his set to 15psi and he was able to go over 30psi and make 687 whp.

Not much gonna happen until I get back to GA. The 14psi springs held 30 before so there is no doubt these will do the job. My plan was to keep my hands off the boost controller and be locked by the gates on pump gas. There's quite a bit of adjustment left on the arms so I will tinker with it when I get it back home.

It could be from pre throttle body pressure being higher than intake manifold pressure skewing the gates open pressure. The feed line for the boost control solenoid is pre tb. Either way, they will need to be adjusted and I will post my findings as I test. I had a map sensor pre tb and maf sensor which would register a near 3psi difference at 25psi+ before. I'm thinking that is what is happening.

That sounds like it's most likely it. But remember don't put your line to the boost controller AFTER the meth jets, or you will pump meth into the boost control solenoid and kill it. (if you were thinking of moving it)

Sounds like you need one of our 90MM intakes:)

The reference has been in the same place since '09. The dsbc has been in there since '08. I've been spraying meth since '09. I think it'll be good to go. Hoping to hit the goal without any more purchases.

The clutch is starting to get tired so some delay in good progress is gonna happen. It's still drivable, it's just that engagement is at the top of the pedal's throw and slippage is going to happen soon.

Congratulations on staying in it Jeff.

Is the surge still an issue with the new v2 vs the v1?

Cruising surge was fixed before with the V1's with my fix. It'll still surge if I turn the system off with these. There is a bit more lag in the new setup vs the old but it's not bad at all.

I haven't tested enough in power to see the lower threshold of surge but, I know it'll still do it down low. The threshold before was around 4000RPM in 3rd gear.

So are these custom turbos then? Not the off the shelf V2?

They have a 12* clip on the turbine. The exhaust housings are ported from DR. Not off the shelfers.

Did you stick with the 9.1 compression or go back down to 8.1..?

I just saw a video of DK77's spool (granted it was at 6000 ft) and it looked quite a bit laggier than the video of Eric's V1 spool. I personally had some weird issue and mine spooled up super slow so I can't use my personal experience as an example.

Don't put too much stock into my video lol. Most people don't realize how much elevation kills power/spool. At sea level my spool was comparable to the other DR750 cars maybe slightly slower. I've lost over 100 actual horsepower to the wheels up here. Jeff's before/after will be interesting but not necessarily useful for others as his turbos have an extra clip to them.

8.5/1 then and now.

700whp on TD04s is going to be insane. Just remember, 15Gs are the biggest turbo you can run on a 3S :p

Honestly and just to be clear, the V1's I had were capable of doing it because every VD street pull always netted less WHP per pound of boost than the real dyno. With the STD CF (seems to be the CF of choice) instead of the DIN CF that the dyno shop used it made 692WHP at only 26psi. It also wasn't running right as it was overfueled causing issues. I also believe the driver went WOT too early causing some surging which may be attributed to the wavy dyno result. Like I said before the threshold for surgeless power pulls was near 4000RPM. The pull was started at 3300RPM. I was outside behind the car and had no way of knowing what it was doing and they wouldn't let me stand inside the shop or ride in the car while it was on the rollers.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr316/jjd222002/DynopullwithSTDCF_zps8ddaee18.png

It Virtual Dynoed 700 maxing the map sensor out (BC showed an peak of 30psi). 28psi seemed to be the ceiling before as on that VD pull power nose dived up top in big boost and high RPM.

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr316/jjd222002/Everythingcorrectwithracegasvd_zpsd977ee88.jpg

Putting these parts on it this time are just the result of an engine rebuild/upgrade after a crankshaft failure. I am extremely confident Ray will be the first to dyno 700 on TD04's but this one will make more, eventually;).

Well I remember that you're running a little higher compression which I believe helped get you a little closer to that magical goal. I believe you mentioned in your other thread that after 28psi, it seems the turbos were falling off while Ray has gone up to 32psi. I'm very curious as I've mimicked my build as close as possible to Ray's. I have a couple small items such as DNP o2 deletes that have me hoping to hit close to if not a bit over what Ray was able to accomplish. Granted I know that Ray knows what the hell he's doing but I figure IF I can't, I'll just fly him out here to make it happen. Lol.

Also what oil pump gear did you end up going with? A billet or stock? I haven't been able to source a billet as the ones by Wayne I believe had some small issues.
