So, we've had a few discussions here and there in the chatbox about our favorite liquors and other adult beverages, but it seems that quite a few of us enjoy sitting down and relaxing with a nice bourbon.
Who else likes bourbon? What is/are your normal go to on brand(s)?
I typically go to Makers Mark (regular and/or Makers 46) or Woodford Reserve, myself, but have recently polished off a bottle of Four Roses that went over well and picked up a bottle of C.W. Irwin to try out, which has nice review (http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/showthread.php?17703-Two-(semi)-new-bourbons-both-distilled-in-Oregon)s.

If I drink bourbon it's usually just Beam or Jack. Talk to me about single malt Scotch. :D
jim. but jim and its brands (makers mark, etc) are now owned by a japanese company. not that there's anything wrong with that. wild turkey & 4 roses are owned by japanese companies too (mitsubishi kiretsu)--so by all means, support mitsubishi. :)
as long as it's not ab-ambev, i'm ok with it.
realistically, as long as it mixes well with coke zero, i'll probably drink it. whiskey & coke? check. bourbon & coke? check. vodka & coke? check. gin & coke? check. rum & coke? check. soco & coke? check.
i do love me some jim & coke...though i will try jack or john occasionally to mix it up.
Just so it's clear, Jack Daniels is sour mash - not technically a bourbon - nonetheless, I lump it in with bourbon, as do many others.
Jack black is my 'old reliable'; works well in the absence of other options.
In that vein, I really like Gentleman Jack, too.
I love Wild Turkey; it's a higher proof than most, but still very sippable, straight-up - I don't like to mix it, or put cubes in it, or anything else...if you can't sip whatever liquor you drink, without adornment, I don't feel you can claim to have a proper affinity for it.
I am totally ignoring those who like mixed drinks (they have their place, and I like them, too), but if one pronounces oneself a fan of any particular liquor, and can't drink it straight, your opinion is suspect.
My two cents, at any rate. :)
Anyone ever try Georga Moon?
It's marketed in a Mason jar, just like the stuff I used to buy from the old fella with the still down in Roswell. :)
Jeff, I wasn't even aware that Four Roses made a bourbon - I'll keep my eyes open for that.

If I'm going for high-brow, I like Elijah Wood. It's actually not even that expensive, but is verrry smooth.
Lately I have been drinking a lot of Bird Dog (blackberry). The peach is disgusting.

ahh, gentleman jack is a nice change up every now and again, it's more expensive around here due to the name on the bottle.
I'll have to keep my eyes out for some Georgia Moon, Kev. Anything in a mason jar gets an automagic +2 for being cool.
The Four Roses was a christmas gift, and it was quite smooth & tasty. I'll be picking up another bottle at some point down the road, it's a nice thing to keep in reserve.
I can't recall ever trying Wild Turkey, though it is at most of the pubs around here. Next time I'm out I'll have to give it a shot.

That Captain Tea mixer is gross. Took 1 drink (someone bought it for me) and poured it out. Actually, no I didn't, just looked in my 2nd fridge and it's still there, lol. I need to dump that nastiness out.

The only bourbon I have at the moment is 1792. The rest is Scotch.

If I'm sipping I prefer a Knob Creek or Black Label. As long as it doesn't make me cringe, jingle my head, and touch my ear to shoulder I'll drink it. I've only tried maybe 5 different brands. The KC over ice was smoothest for my pallet.
Knob Creek = good stuff. :wink:

When it's cold out and I want to sip I throw back some Belle Brillet Pear Cognac = Da Bomb Diggety! For family affairs its bourbon all day. This past Thanksgiving when I went to Missouri we threw back a couple bottles of Private Reserve Makers, Gentlemen Jack, and some Black Label. We drank all the bourbon and whiskey in the house in 8 hours :p

I did forget to put Makers as one. Started drinking that about a year ago. Just don't did Bourbon all that often.

I'm not much of a JD fan myself, either. not particularly smooth or tasty, IMO. it's fine in a pinch for mixing with coke (diet, of course, but that's another thread =b) when there's nothing else around, but I tend to stay away from it.
i've only tried knob creek a couple of times, i seem to remember it being good stuff...

I learned this last weekend @ a Superbowl party: adding 1 or 2 drops of water to a shot of Bourbon helps disperse some of the oils on the surface that seeped out of the casks they used to age it, and opens up completely different flavors of the Bourbon. Don't water the damn stuff down...just 1 or 2 drops. You can try it with 2 shots side by side and taste the subtle difference; the one with the 2 drops of water tastes smoother to me.

interesting. I usually take mine with a cube or some whiskey stones in it. I'll have to give this a shot (pun...somewhat intended) and see how it goes

I've had some Elijah Craig and Woodford Reserve in a bourbon flight my cigar club did a few years ago. I never got into the taste of bourbon though. I like my cognac's. I'm a big Gran Marnier fan but my favorite is Remy Martin. I love their VSOP, 1738 and best of all is their Louis XIII which will set you back about $2k. We had a Remy martin Liquor rep set us up a full flight of Remy including the Louis XIII. I have yet to find a liquor store that sells it...LOL

crown black & coke zero tonight. tried a honey jack. prefer the crown. tried both straight. wife can do honey jack straight...but it's a bit much for me.
honey raki is mo better.

ugh honey jack. that was fun to try out at a bar once or twice, i ended up buying a bottle. too sweet to actually enjoy a good amount of it. the bottle ended up sitting and collecting dust for quite a while until one night when i was already drunk and began attacking it. just seems like a novelty item.

Picked up a bottle of a rye whiskey earlier today, can't recall the name off hand and I'm too lazy to get up and check it out. I'll update this post later with brand and my opinion. Wish I had the money to buy/try a bunch of liquors to find some more preferred ones.

Buffalo Trace is my go to .. great straight up
4 Roses is as tasty
W.L. Weller .. there are many variations, my last bottle was a 12 year old
Recently sampled some Basil Hayden .. I'll get another bottle soon
Pappy is nice .. outrageously expensive and rare as a trouble free 3S
Scotch .. single malt Macallan 15 yr old is almost untouchable when it comes to smooth
All of the above should be enjoyed straight up or with just half a cube of ice to chill it a bit

Now that I've turned from a single malt Scotch guy to a Bourbon guy I figured I'd bump this.
