Not bad at all, but it's the upgrade version which (I think) requires Win7 Basic or Vista to work, not the full OS, which is still about $300 for the system-builder's 3-pack.

It works on XP?

Hot damn.

Ffs, I'm running Win7 Pro on everything except my netbook (XP), right now...I'll bet I've got a half-dozen legit copies of XP Pro laying around.

Think I'll make gifts of them to a few people.

Yes, dragging people out of the dark ages - good stuff.

You'll have to do a fresh install as it won't upgrade direct from XP, but so long as you have a valid key, you can use the upgrade version of 7. I'm tempted to buy this for future proofing, as it's even cheaper than the last time they did the family pack (was $150).

Has the "Home Edition" improved since the times of XP? I could not stand not having simple things like msconfig and gpedit.msc IIRC in the home edition. I ended up buying my single license win7 ultimate x64 (full version) for like $174 :(

Home edition has improved a lot since XP days. The only thing my 7 Home doesn't have that my pro has(that I actually use) is remote desktop hosting abilities :(. Other than that, unless you are a power user, I would just get home.

home won't let you connect to a domain and you don't get xp virtual mode nor encryption(ultimate) otherwise its loaded.

^ This.
But MOST people don't need those features. I know I don't and I have a pc with ultimate, and one with pro. And have only used the xp mode to see how it works once, and never again. So unless you NEED pro to join your work or schools domain, or have to use some old out of date software, or really need your data to be encrypted then just stick with the home premium.
