View Full Version : Bloodiest battle in MMO history causes a quarter million dollars in loss

Once again Eve delivers as no other game in the world can. Since currency in eve can be purchased with real money and likewise sold for real money (against EULA) it's easy to convert in-game losses to real dollars, which was around $200,000 - $300,000 in this case. The fight was between two of the largest coalitions in the game, one of which I belong to. All in all the fight consisted of around 2 - 3,000 pilots simultaneously and was the result of a simple error of not paying a sovereignty bill by the corp in charge of the solar system.
The biggest contributing factor to such a huge loss is the amount of Titans destroyed. Titans are the largest and most powerful ships in the game. One of the Titans destroyed in this battle was owned by a guy named The Khan and was worth around 200,000,000,000 isk or roughly $5,000. Unfortunately I belong to N3/PL coalition, which was on the losing end of this battle but it was definitely an epic experience to be part of this.
This wasn't the largest battle in eve but was definitely the most costly. It made news on Fox, ABC and CBS.
One unfortunate side effect is the market price for minerals has jumped up significantly as industrial pilots across the entire game are now tasked with making more Titans, which take about 3 months to build and an enormous amount of resources. This puts a damper on my alt corps capital ship assembly program but we will manage.
Here is a video recorded by a third party showing part of the battle. The entire fight lasted 20 hours until the server was shut down for daily maintenance. The video may look slow due to the time dialation caused by such large numbers. Time dialation basically slows down time in the game, allowing the server to process all the data.

I've been playing Eve since early 2005 and it keeps getting better and better. Hopefully one day we can have battles like this without time dialation or lag but I'm not sure humans could actually coordinate effectively in real time during something like this via teamspeak.

Given thought to giving it a shot again, was going to install it Tuesday and play with class closed due to the snow but the power supply in my PC failed unfortunately. I'm sure there'll be a boon in population after this battle.

Yeah, we lost 59 Titans that day. Not a fun time in that aspect.

Probably because that when you convert the ISK value of the ship losses involved into dollars, it comes out to around $300,000 to $330,000.
A better article explaining it all with large pictures to help those who know nothing about EVE.

Based on my limited knowledge of the situation, probably not happening. As I recall, the presumption before was that N3/PL had the stronger force and would win in a straight upfight against CFC, but the opposite happened. Whether or not N3/PL could've stemmed the tide with more time, who knows. At any rate, likely would be more expensive to try to counter attack given the losses sustained already.

My big bros, Pandemic Legion (I'm in their training alliance), cut a deal with the CFC to extract assets out of B-5 and are heading North, effectively ending their participation in the Halloween War. It was a ballsy thing to ask for, but The Mittani (Most known person in all of EVE) agreed to it. My group, Sniggwaffe, are a few jumps away in HED-GP and I just got done moving my carrier into the area.
I have no fucking clue what we're going to do.

Didn't know you played. PL took a huge hit, somewhere around 4Trillion ISK worth of ships. The renter empire will help feed some of that lost money back into the alliance wallet but it will take time. Also, the problem on the PL side was two fold. B-R is a dead end pipe system with only one gate, so with forces camping the other side they were effectively cut off from outside aid unless it had the ability to Cyno in. Hell, OZ3C-G only has two gates into it, making camping even better. It was a risk staging out of there. Also, for whatever reason the PL FC who took over called a primary switch and went after Sort Dragon. In the time it took for them to bring his Titan down, CFC forces had already taken out 4 PL Titans.

Silly questions, but a) can you die and b) if you can what happens if you do? You just rejoin different username?

I played briefly, but moved to TN not long after and data limits on internet + MMOs don't go well together. I have other friends in real life who play though so I've been chatting with them about it. I think PL has made the right call to get assets and get out of the war. I mean honestly, with all those assets tied up, how much could they have contributed to the war effort anyway? I still maintain that even with more time and some magical way to regroup, N3/PL had no chance (and still don't.) Worst possible move that could be made would be dipping into reserves to replace the Titans and launching a counter attack, losing reserves would be crippling. Better to try to stick with the stale mate/smaller engagements and rebuild. At any rate, this may be the beginning of the end, who knows.
Once I get MSI to RMA this graphics card I may give it a try again, at least for a free trial period. Running this system on integrated graphics is maddening just for school work for now, I don't even want to think about trying to game on it. Not a position financially to afford to get involved with an MMO anyhow, so it'd be short term return anyhow.
the consequences will never be the same.

A) Yes you can die.
B) Your clone is activated at the station you chose for it. If you didn't update your clone, you could lose several days worth of skills, meaning you may lose the ability to fly certain ships or use certain equipment. Not to mention the ship you were in is gone and if your pod was destroyed any implants you had are now gone.
Permanently.
Here is an example of a person whose Pod was killed.
https://www.pandemic-legion.com/killboard/view_kill.php?id=718461
That is a very basic set of implants and even then they ran about 120 Million ISK. Now all of that is gone.

Oh it's not that bad. I didn't play for almost two weeks up until a few days ago. It's all about time management, because no one forces you to log in.

Dopamine forces you to log in :D
At any rate, no EVE for Paul till he either fixes his trans, or tells me when Wayne is coming through so I can bribe him to look at the trans. :suspect:
I did get an RMA approval for my graphics card from MSI at least, but they said it'll take them like a month to get it done and get me my replacement. So no EVE for a while for me unfortunately :(
