Just got my GT60-20D-261. Purchased from Newegg for $2079. I don't know why anyone would consider anything else for a gaming laptop. Specs are amazing as it is, and the 3k screen resolution is just indescribably good. Side by side with my GX660R @ 1080p, you can just tell things are sharper...even though the pundits scream that the eye supposedly can't distinguish. My thoughts?

-Keyboard is just tits. Customizable backlighting is beautiful. Just gorgeous.

-Brushed metal accents (lid & palm rest) are very classy, though they do attract some fingerprints. Superior to the generic plastic on my GX660R. Could acceptably pass for a business PC.

-Windows 8.1 and all of the windows updates fixed a LOT of complaints I initially had with it.

If anyone is wondering, there's 3x slots for SSD's (only 1x 128GB SSD is included). And you can easily go way past the 16GB ram included with it. Much of the "fake chrome" accents on the GX660R are gone, and the bezel is now matte plastic instead of glossy (I prefer matte).

You can look up the specs if you really want, but suffice it to say that as of this post, it's pretty much about as high-end as you can get for a 15" form factor gaming pc, and incredibly cheap for all that is packed inside. You can upgrade a lot of things on it (either at a boutique dealer or DIY), but it's so chock-full from the get-go, you probably won't need to. The only thing that could have made this PC better is a 16:10 screen.

Happened to me with a GTX 260M and my Sager 8662. It certainly isn't a problem isolated to MSI. What I can tell you is that my GX660R with a 5870 hasn't had any issues at all since i got it in December of 2010.

The problem I find with the gaming laptops (and my experience is a bit dated). They were too heavy, got hardly any battery life, and were too dense and hard to keep cool. The gpu&cpu would overheat pretty quickly after the first year, even with vents cleared out. I don't know if my thermal paste was breaking down, but the computer would overheat constantly and shut off, even doing simple things.

I hardly moved the laptop anywhere, so why not just have an ultrabook (or a lovely C720 chromebook ;) ) for mobile stuff, and have a desktop?

I swore off desktops back in 2006. Fact is, software simply does NOT tax hardware these days, so laptop gaming isn't really a compromise. My laptop stays plugged in 99% of the time, and weight doesn't really bother me since I'm not moving it much. I can't speak to every gaming laptop, but my MSI GX660R I got back in December of 2010 hasn't had one single issue since I got it, and it's rarely ever turned off. I wish I could say the same for the Sager 8662 I got in 2009, but I can't; damn GTX 260m went belly up.

Steven, if you don't own MSI don't knock it. I was skeptical at first too...but I've owned one for over 3 years now. The brand is SERIOUSLY underrated. If you're rocking an Apple, HP or Dell, I feel bad for you son.

I've owned 4 Sagers since 2004. First was a P4 Extreme, overheating problems and graphics problems. Second I bought in 2008. I think something on the motherboard exploded, because there was a bunch of dark sticky shit that was coming out of the laptop. Third had overheating and graphics problems (known with NVidea) and was just barely under warranty. That one has been running fine since. My last one is starting to overheat a lot and will shutdown whenever running something like youtube or any other video streaming for longer than 10 minutes.

I think I need to replace the thermal paste because the fans are all clean and functional.

Assuming some transformer or something in there. I didn't spill anything on it. Just one day it wouldn't turn on and i noticed that. I opened the HDD/RAM panel, and I could see this stuff all over the RAM and motherboard.

Well I've had 2 Asus gaming laptops (in a 15" and 17" variety), currently have an HP Envy 15". Has an i7 and 5870m mobile graphics, and it gets hot enough to literally burn someone. Picked it up used off of eBay for 600 bucks and I've gotten about 2 years out of it so far. Only reason I even got a powerful laptop was because at the time I had a 5gb data limit from my verizon 3g internet, so I wanted something strong enough to game on when I went places with wifi (like school or visiting my parents in NY.) Now that I've moved up by campus and have real internet, that's not an issue anymore, but likely won't sell the HP just because buying a smaller lighter one to replace it would probably cost as much as I could sell the HP for.

I'd still take my desktop over any laptop though.

sounds like your HP is similarly spec'd to my GX660R. 5870 is a fantastic GPU, btw...stable as a mutherfucker. HP's are all clevo's though. Just like Dell's, Alienware, etc.

Oh it's a fantastically quick laptop, and plenty of grunt to get shit done. unfortunately with a metal case and just a handful of vents around the sides, it really can't evacuate enough air, especially since the i7 is one of the first gens and the 5870 is well..a 5870. Both components are known for running hotter than hell.

I like MSI, but I've had strange issues with some of their stuff. I currently have an EVGA card, but I've had issues with one of EVGAs motherboards.

Luck of the draw with any of the big name manufacturers at this point, IMO. If you buy the cheapo brands, good luck.

Got an email back from MSI regarding my RMA for my HD7950.
They don't have any stock and are offering me $280. Far less than I paid for the card and would only allow me to afford a gtx760 or r9 270x, both of which are downgrades. NOT happy with MSI atm.
