View Full Version : How can I reset the SRS computer?

Hello all,
My SRS light is on and has been since I purchased the car 4 years ago.
I was wondering if there is a way to reset the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) computer? I think the vehicle was in a front end accident prior to me purchasing it and I think one of the shock sensors was replaced in the front.
Does the SRS computer do a system check every time the car is turned on? Does it remember faults that would have caused the SRS light to come on even if the reason for the fault might have been repaired?
Last question, if the code is not cleared, is there a way to see what the code is for?
Thanks

Does it have an aftermarket steering wheel? If you turn on the power with anything unplugged (airbags) it will give you the light. The mitsu dealer will flash it for a few bucks, maybe free. I had Jeff V reset mine at NG because I turned the ignition on with the steering wheel airbag unplugged.

Mine goes on and off randomly in both '97's that I've owned. Might as well try to do something about it now!

First thing we need to know is what model/year is your car? There is a very cheap bluetooth scanner you csn buy on amazon for less than $15 but it is only for an OBDII car. I haven't yet found one that works for the OBDI cars. There was a thread about this on 3si. I'll try to find the scanner I'm talking about. Other members confirmed it works on srs faults. Just needs free software to work.

Also the way the srs comp works is once it detects a fault it stays on until the code is cleared. Some people claim you csn clear it by following a certain sequence of key turns but I tried everything on mine and no dice. However mine is a 1990 JDM GTO.

You need a drb2 capable scanner. The dealer box used to be available everywhere but they seem to have dried up. The snapon mt2500 will work but i cant find which key and adapters are needed. Im on a mission to get mine resolved as well so will post back once i know.
Fwiw. Im sure srs on both my cars is due to low voltage warning.

I searched Amazon. The one talked about previously was units based on the ELM327 chip. They are on average usd $12.00.

I know how to spell but I can't do it well when the keys on my damn phone are so small. I usually check over my posts for "fat finger mistakes" but forgot. Now that we have sorted that. Can you fuck off?

I found the original thread on 3si. He mentioned the app required also.

Does anyone know if the srs computer communicates in obd1/2 protocol or something else? my reason for asking is I know the srs comp only uses 2 of the pins in the diagnostic connector. So if I bought an obd2 scanner and used a wire to jump the pin from my obd1 plug to an obd2 scanner would it work? Assuming of course that I am able to power the scanner somehow.

Im pretty sure that method only works on the obdII vehicles, I'm 1st gen so stuck with trying to find a drbII (or mutII) capable device. Here is good info Jon put up some years back. Back then the freak`n dealer drbs were pretty obtainable, they seen ear impossible to find these days :(
SRS Diagnostic using DRBII (http://www.wrenchjockey.com/Webpages/DRB.html)
I'm still trying to find which key, and adapters are needed for the snapon mt2500 I have a feeling I'm going to be spending some money trial and error to figure it out.

A 1st gen car uses the Hyundai-2 adapter with the jumper wire kit to move the pins around.... I just re-purposed an extra connector and moved the pins around to build a dedicated SRS connector.
The 94-95 cars use the OBDII connector, with K15.
The instructions are in the scan tool setup menu provided you have the Asian software.(which is also a requirement)

Thanks RealMcCoy!!
I'm not wrong in assuming the mt2500 will also read abs and ecs just like the drb2 does right?

It will only do engine, SRS, and transmission on auto cars.

Best choice... That or a MUT.

OBD2 is a protocol that's only used for government-mandated emissions parameters in the engine controller. It doesn't talk to transmissions, SRS units, climate control or anything else. I'm very skeptical about the guy who says his OBD2 / Torque dongle can clear them.
I have a pair of DRB2s and a (broken  ) MUT-II. The DRBs are worth the investment. They'll work on everything up to '95, and most of the non-engine systems after that. I meant to test the DRB on a 97+ SRS computer at the NG last year, but never got around to it.
On the rare occasion you can find an MUT-II, they're expensive and don't do much that the DRB won't, at least when it comes to a 3S. It'd be good to have one if you were a professional shop, but at that price point, there's tools like the SnapOn that'll do a lot more for the same money.
There are Chinese clones of the later MUT-III, but support for pre-2004 cars is super sketchy. The Chinese MUT-IIIs ship with pirated copies of European diagnostic software that's missing a whole lot of US market and pre-2004 stuff. The US diagnostic software is distributed directly to dealers over a secured intranet link and is basically impossible to obtain.

Is this one capable of reading mut-II or purely for reprogramming? It looks near identical to the drb2 i purchased.
Mitsubishi Motors ECU Flash Reprogramming Unit Kit MIT992000 1995 99 MUT Tool | eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mitsubishi-Motors-ECU-Flash-Reprogramming-Unit-Kit-MIT992000-1995-99-Mut-tool-/281251228254?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item417be12a5e)
I've not seen any of the MUT scanners I've read about, did the other platforms grab them all up?

Haven't see that tool, from the looks of the cartridges and the wording I would say it's only for reprogramming.

That reflashing kit is so Mitsubishi dealers could reprogram the Eclipses that had Chrysler engines and transmissions.
