LOL Lots of Nickelback hate in here.

I never understood it. I don't like them, but I don't hate them either. Most of their songs are pretty contrite and cheesy, but you can say that about a LOT of other bands out there. The thing I hate the most about bands is when they don't know when to quit. They come out with 1-2 great albums... and then the rest of their stuff is shit, but they keep pumping it out for a few more albums until no one can stand listening to their stuff.

Add an extra degree of seperation and the lead singer of My Darkest Days gets you to Three Days Grace (related to the lead guitarist), which up until Gontier left was a great band.

Oh, I'm with you on Toto, too - it's just the issue of "taste", good or bad.

There's no accounting for it.

Everyone has a fairly lengthy list of guilty treasures, you see?

I'll guarantee there are more people here who like Nickleback than will admit - they've authored some pretty hefty power-pop grooves, frankly.

My objection to them has much more to do with the evocative, horn-dog triteness of their lyrics.

IPD
01-24-2014, 08:00 AM
For me, it's more about how they were played ALL THE FRACKING TIME on every radio station. I want to falcon punch someone every time I hear "someday". it's the same reason i can't stand train's "drops of jupiter". "How You Remind Me" is equally annoying--and that goes for pretty much everything else they have.

History shows that all bands have at least ONE good song in them (with a few exceptions). I hate the hell out of Coldplay, but there's a special place in my heart for "Viva la Vida" (it's an inside joke between me and my wife, so no, I will not explain it to you).

"Triteness" of lyrics is relative. Looking back on some of my favorite 80's songs, there's some pretty pedestrian lyrics in some of those songs, and yet--compared to some of the genius intellects of Kanye West, Chris Brown, etc--those same lyrics look positively inspired. For me, a terrific rhythm and melody can cover the multitude of sins--but Nickelback has none of that going for it.

Quantify "bad".

I listened to Toto doing White Sister the other day and found myself drumming on my desk.

The word 'all' was used in reference to the entirety of their music, so I'm not really sure what type of quantification you are looking for. I think Nickelback, like most bands, has a mix of good songs and crap songs. Their Photograph song is a crap/bad song imo. And to the same point I think Animals is an example of a good song. But I have the influence of having seen their stuff performed live, and for some reason that tends to shape my opinions on bands.

However one of my personal requirments for a song to be deemed good is that the lyrics can't be nonsensical. Nickelback tends to walk the edge with regard to this point as their lyrics are cliche'. But perhaps the live performances, where the rest of the band tends to be on a more equal level with the vocals, is what allows me to give them some lattitude on this point.

Porn Star Dancing is an awesome song.

I would call it an okay song at best. It's catchy but it takes more than being catchy for something to be good music. My Darkest Days did put on a decent show when I saw them live though.

A band being "overplayed" isn't their fault.

I would definately agree with this, and I think its funny how bands that are "cool to hate" typically go through similar stages with the public. Creed is a really good example of the same thing happening. They had some good songs but after becoming super popular and being overplayed people made it a thing to comment on "how terrible" they were. The joke is that their success is the very thing that fueled their demise.

Thought this was interesting - from an interview with Steve Lukather:

"In the meantime, we sold three million records, and at least one of us played on every single record that came out of L.A. for the next 20 years. At the time, it did hurt our feelings; we were like, “What the f—? We’re not that bad.” History has been a little kinder to us. I think the trendy critics just stopped picking on us; they’re on to Nickelback now."

I felt the same animosity towards the Kings of Leon as they had 3 or 4 songs that were played on the radio every single day that I hated them. BUT - they are a great band I'm sure. It's not their fault they make catchy music radio stations want to air.

Scooter

I dislike them because I do not feel they are talented in any sense of the word.

They are both excellent reasons to listen to talk radio.

I started listening to talk radio on my work commute about a year ago.

Much better then listening to the same old tired music over and over.

This, my dear granny, is why you buy a generic 32gb mp3 player of ebay ($40 shipped or so) and an aux-input car stereo (or better, a USB port). Then install FireFox on your PC & download "Youtube MP3 Podcaster". Now you have a virtually limitless supply of whatever music you want to listen to.

I actually just downloaded "Volare" by Dean Martin today. No kidding.

With a 360/TQ and a 4-spd, they'd maybe break 17 in the 1/4...:p

ok, i'll bite. i find nickelback formulaic and pedantic with uninspired melodies. I could argue that about a lot of music today....some is just more in your face than others.

Now we are getting somewhere people.

Please explain "pedantic" in your reference to Nickelbach. I don't really get that.

How so? Not talented at music? Obviously you are wrong because they can play music, just not your taste, right?

Jeff - I'm still waiting on your thoughts on the JFK thread. No hurry.

Dammit, I can't even access the JFK thread. Regardless of conspiracy or not, it was 1 gunman. Ballistics prove it.

As to "nickelbach" (sic) it is the lyrics that strike me as pedantic. Maroon 5 has more inspired lyrics, ffs. Now normally that's not an automatic strike against a band. Journey, for example, has rather elementary lyrics--yet they don't warrant the same dislike...largely because Steve Perry is the 2nd greatest singer of all time (just barely 2nd to Freddie Mercury). So it's more like a combination of things that makes Nickleback "awful" to me. Kroger doesn't have the inflection, variations and tonality (or raw power) to make him truly remarkable. When you couple these factors with the blase music, you get a product that is tepidly mediocre.

My favorite music often has people running to Miriam-Webster to decipher some of the more infrequently used words in the English language. My least favorite music usually has people running to urban-dictionary to decipher a "newly invented" turn of phrase which is most likely superfluous to the existing lexicon, but instead "fits" the rhyme scheme of the untalented and largely illiterate "artist" who wrote the song.

Maybe I can start a JFK thread here as it's something that really interests me.

As for music, I think you expect waaaaaayyyyyy much more than I do. I listen, if the sound appeals to me, I'll like it. I'm not ALL about the lyrics, altho they are important.

Eg - my fave band is Muse. Lyrically I think they are very good, however, they can dumb it down when they need to. The Olympics theme song they did Survival is simplistic in every way. It's all about winning for athlete's, yet a lot of their tracks are politically motivated or life motivated.

JFK thread, great. just don't put in politics because I can't access that section. Alan hates me. ;)

As to the rest, I agree. I want a tune to be catchy more than anything. But that is probably why I can tolerate "Call Me Maybe" and not "How You Remind Me".

Industrial beats are not talent, any drum machine can pull that off. Beck though talented, I would not consider thought provoking at all.

sorry, jeff. not cutting it for me. i'm so sick of modern metal. thrash, death, etc...it's all repetitive to me. great when i'm not really paying attention to the music and need something adrenaline pumping in the background for online gaming or something...but completely worthless for relaxing, commuting, or singing along.

and not that catchy either.

my issue with tool is the same one with the stuff jeff posted, it's edgy, but not catchy. some people want a song to make them feel like they took a grenade to the face. for those people, artists like those just posted are great. i'm not one of those people.

don't get me wrong, i do like some coheed & cambria. i have "welcome home" in my playlist. but liking one of their songs is the exception, not the rule. i get WAY more enjoyment out of rodrigo y gabriella.

Well, to be fair PtH are progressive metal and not thrash or death. Their first album was a concept album, to a point the second one was and since then their songs have dealt with more common themes. I listen to Volition, their newest album quite a bit on the way into work. But that's just me and I listen to albums about five or six times before I decide if they're worth staying on my phone.

Now, rodrigo y gabriella are amazing musicians. That we can agree on.

That first video wasn't bad for me EJ, but the others didn't do it for me. Just not something that appeals to me. That's where I get confused with other people. They don't like NB, that's fine. Why make a song and dance about it? It's not like they get voted year in and out to be the greatest band in the world. They make music that appeals to some but not others. Isn't that what every single band in the world does?

OMG they jumped the shark. The one thing I liked about NB was they surprised me with every new album. The first time I would hear one I was like damn this is good. The 2nd or 3rd time I was like this sucks. This is bad right of the bat, even if I agree with the message, it sucks. Singer needs to grow his hair back out, looks douche bag (I'm with the trend) guy. Metallica did it :awesome:

All I hear is that Nickelbach suck. I see no reasons. If I heard, "hey, I don't like them" that would be ok. But clowns yelling out "follow me and agree that they suck because the suck and scream it out" just shit me.

I saw these guys in Spokane Washington last year, the arena was rocking with this song. Great show, lots of explosions. lol

I didn't see their cover of ZZ Top in Spokane, but the video looks good, and I have seen ZZ Top in concert. :)
