View Full Version : Why is this site so slow for me

I don't visit very often because this forum is just so slow. Most times it freezes up and then goes to "ie is not responding". I'm at work so downloading any other IB is out of the question. Maybe I can change some of my settings or is that pointless?

Thanks.

the only time i really get any slowdown on FF (here or elsewhere) is when there's a SHITTON of youtube videos being pre-loaded. the "what are you listening to" thread is an example of this.

i can't speak to your work's settings. FF+ABP+Ghostery+NoScript is about the most pain-free experience you can have.

If I had any idea what you just said, I wouldn't be scratching my head right now. lol

FF+ABP+Ghostery+NoScript = Firefox, Ad Block Plus, Ghostery "Program that blocks tracking", Noscript "Blocks Javascript, flash, java, etc from running". Adding all of those in will just slow down yourr browser and computer. The more add-ons/plugins you have installed the more processes attached to the browser are running.

This forum runs a standard vBulletin install, the same as 3si "just a much more current version".

Most likely you are having issue because you are in Australia and the server is based out of the US. The latency between the two is enough to cause the site to load slow. You internet speed is also a factor. Since you said you are at work, another guess is the network at your office is either too slow or your firewall is very restrictive in it's checks that it slows things down.

It's not quite that black & white, gonzo. While a PC with mediocre hardware may experience some browser slowdown with add-ons, a GOOD pc will barely notice the difference. Even more than that though, the overall internet experience will be faster (on all but the most insanely high-speed connections) because all of the advertisement junk, superfluous cookies, etc...aren't being kept or loaded. While it is all a matter of user preference, I'd really like to keep websites from spamming me with ads tailored around my browsing habits. I didn't add these plug-ins willy-nilly. Each was added deliberately based on frustrations I was having with my browsing experience. It might be a system hog to some, but this 3 year old laptop has 6GB ram and does just fine on most everything.

I guess I should have clarified, it will start to slow down your browser based on the fact of the additional processes it fires up for each addon. Each time you open a new tab, it fires off another set of processes just for that new tab as the original ones are attached to the first process and cannot be shared. if you like me and work with multiple tabs open, it will slow things down. Currently I have 15 addons installed in Chrome and FF that I use for work. Ad Block Plus, Cookie Manager, Stylebot, Hola Better Internet and other types of developer tools. They are not on all at once. Once I turn on about 3-4 of them I can see the performance issue. this happens both on my PC and Macbook Pro. It is just the nature of how addons are built, they are all separate processes and just like any other process when you have a bunch running they will slow down a computer. In this instance addons are attached to a browser process and will slow that process down if enough are running at once.

Scotty please list what you know about the specs of your computer, what OS you are on and what browser you use.

Right click on the "my computer" icon on either the desktop or the start menu and select properties. It will then tell you what ver of Windows it is and other useful info.

Sorry about the delay.

I can't use any other IE. I'm stuck with Safari as I am at work and am unable to download anything due to restrictions against virus's.
Surfing 3si is way quicker. I don't have the problems I do here.
I am using Windows XP - not sure what version as it won't let me check what it is. I can't right click computer anywhere. Well I can, but no drop downs display. Sorry to be useless here.

Sounds like you might be on a MAC with Safari.

Its possible that the chat system is causing you issues. I will see what I can do to block you from chat that might help.

Very strange, I have to use IE also at work but this site is blistering fast compared to 3si.

Alan - I think my stupid brain confused itself as I wrote that message when I was at home on my Mac. Safari at home with mac, Internet Explorer at work. (not the 64-bit version)

Does this site work fine for you on your mac? It's possible your work network is causing the issue.

Here lately it's been painfully slow. Not happening on other sites.

ow that I have tested it on about 5-6 links, it stalls at clicking the link on average 7 seconds. Once it decides to follow the link it is very quick.

It has been slow for me recently. I am trying a few things. If that fails I'll ask the host to look.

It's almost like a DNS issue, or something. Once it connects it's lightning fast.

It not DNS the CPU is getting too mush load from something. So that the initial hit to process the PHP/Mysql calls takes longer than is should. When its back to just fetching files its fine.

I am going to try and upgrade some of the OS bits tonight and see what happens.

I will say that virtually every time I post, it hangs. Then I get a "do you want to continue" message. Then I get a "this post is a duplicate of something you posted in the last 20 seconds" message. So my post goes through fine...but there's something in the works causing it to frak up.

I worked on some things over the weekend and its seems better.

Still looking at what could cause slowdowns.

then DON'T mess with it. it may take all day to load...but it WILL load. and i'd rather have that....than "powered by vr4".

I found/fixed several database issues last night and that seemed to help. We're still haveing slowdowns.

I am going to upgrade some OS components over the weekend and see if that helps of makes it worse.

I have set the system to restarts apache every hour. Not a good solution but it should help while I try and sort out the actual issues.
