Ok, so I know this has been brought up on other forums and etc. but I would like to know all of the details. the DSM, Galant, and EVO 1-3 4G63 engines all faced the same way as the 6G72.
I would like to know these answers
1.) Is the bolt pattern that mates the engine and transmission the same? I've read that the GS-T and SL bolt patterns are the same and people put turbo engines in the SL all the time so would a 4G be compatible with the AWD 3/S?
2.) How hard would it be to make your own custom engine mounts for this and how hard would it be to wire? The ECU on 1G DSMs is in the same location and the same shape as the 3/S
3.) What clutch and flywheel would I use if I were to use the AWD tranny from a 3/S already in the car?
4.) Would this even fit? Like is it too long as compared to the 6 or too tall for the stock hood?
Now this swap to some sounds like a dumb idea when I have my own reasons for wanting to undergo this.
1.) Less weight: plain and simple, less weight and especially in the front helps with handling braking and acceleration
2.) Easily achieves the HP goals I want for less money: I can build a 450hp 4G63 for less money than the 6G72
3.) More reliability and more room to work and overall more simple
Any advice will help. Thanks!

Don't think anyone has tried it but if you are asking how hard it would be to make custom mounts you are probably over your head on this one.
I would just use a DSM trans and Tcase and have a custom driveshaft made. You'll want to check to make sure drive ratios front and rear match up. Just a guess but I think you need the 3S 6 speed rear.
You would want to significantly reduce the weight of the car so that the lack of tq is made up for with lightness. The good thing is you would lose one head and turbo hanging out front so weight distribution should improve plus a little weight lost already.
Good luck! I've thought about it myself as a fun project for a shell.

+1 everything this.
though i wonder if a 4g63 would be "better suited" for the often talked about RWD 3S after turning the motor 90 degrees...

So there is no way to bolt it up to the stock AWD transmission? Or even make an adapter plate?

Here's a thread that has pics of the bellhousing differences. They did the opposite. 6g72 in a DSM. You may be able to swap bellhousings. No idea on that.
If you are serious about a 4g63 in a 3S start buying the parts and you'll find a way. To my knowledge, no one has done it so you won't find definitive answers on all of the details.
RWD swap would be fun but much more involved with mounting it. Shouldn't be too hard to mount the 4g63 using the stock 3S mounts for AWD.

you might be in over your head.
but please, prove me wrong. start buying and comparing parts and tinkering and figuring out how to put stuff together. innovation is always a plus. if it's something that you really want to do, you'd be going down mostly unexplored territory.

Hmmm wonder if your car can move as fast with the lack of TQ. If you bolt a awd 5 speed or maybe even 6 speed in, you car will be slow as hell till turbo kick in and if you can stay in power band. the weight difference I heard is not whole a lot. I bet a 500hp 6g72 is much more reliable than 450hp 4g63. You can make a adapter plate for your engine, but that would be a few hundred dollars and that's half of 15g turbo money right there.

Why adapter plate when you can mount the whole engine trans and Tcase? DSM trans are cheap.

They break with dsm weight. can't imagine them on 3/s weight.

I'm assuming he would drop weight otherwise what a dog it will be. Would be a fun drag car experiment. Also they break with tq. Pick a big turbo and rev it. No tq issue.
