View Full Version : To cam or not to cam?

I am going through my engine this winter and have decided to put a little thought in on the cam setup. Some relevant engine mods are:
- 3.75L
- DR stage 3 heads with 272's
- MHI TD05 20G's
- all the supporting mods
I'm not looking for a conversation about why I have the turbos I have or anything, I just want some opinions (and hopefully facts) about if I should keep what I have, run stock cams, or get something else. I know BC made some new cams for our cars... Are they worth it? I am revving out to 8000 rpms, and plan to keep doing that, so I am thinking stock cams might not be too great.
Thought/opinions, go!

What's wrong with the current cams?

Well, what is the cam card for your current cams?

Pump gears for the higher rpm maybe?

Go to the track with race gas or go to a dyno already. Get a baseline THEN change things. My OPINION.

Nothing is wrong with the current cams, just seeing what's out there and thinking out loud
I can't find the cam card, they are what nomiez has... The 150e grind
Bill, the pump gear is included in "all the supporting mods"
Gnat, I know what you're saying and I don't disagree, but I have issues with the setup that need fixed and that won't happen before I can get to the track

Oh, and I talked with ray about it a little, and he thinks what I have are good. I am still curious as to everyone's thoughts though

The 150e should be a webgrind camshaft. That's where DR gets his made. You can look up the cam card for a 150e if I'm not mistaken on their website. I would keep the 272s you have unless you feel like reving past 8k to 9k rpms with some 280 cams. Right now I'm sure the 272s are working well for where you're reving to and where the 20Gs make power.

I tried to look up the cam card, but my google skill is failing me I guess.
I really was hoping to hear some more opinions on cams and I was REALLY hoping to hear something about those new BC cams that everyone was up in arms about

They took down the timing card recently. Try this link and if it doesn't work I can get a screenshot of the cached page to post up. I don't think there are going to be any significant differences between the 2 sets of cams honestly..until someone proves me wrong. I gained 30whp with my webcams. Have you seen my before/after cam swap thread?

Chris has one of the first sets and is installing them, but there won't be a before and after comparison. Not sure when we will see a back to back comparison on actual dyno. Best case scenario would probably be someone doing a VD, unless Ray or Chris want to be awesome and do it with a stock motor and cams vs BC cams just as a baseline of the minimum you could expect. Doubtful though.

If you have the DR street cams (web 510/150) they will be a good fit on a street car and match the power band of your turbos and big engine. Boost will come in hard and power hold past 7k before dropping.
They have a little more lift than stock and supposed to have more duration but mine measured (crudely) just barely more than stock at .050" lift. Their center lines are shifted to 110/110 instead of stock which gives you a +1, -3 built in if you degree them correctly (mine needed degreed because of head shaving and cam inaccuracy.) Matt spec'd these so he loves the +1-3 and had it built in.
Edit: You definitively should degree them if you haven't already. Because of the major changes to stock you have with the big motor your cams could be off by a significant margin. Use the webcam online calculator and plug in your measured crank degree at .050" lift and adjust as necessary your cam gears to get them to 110* on both intake and exhaust.

Nomiez, yeah I looked through it briefly. I am going to read in in depth when I get some free time
Serge, when you say Chris, who you talkin bout? ABM? Ninja? Gump?
Familyman, when I pull my engine I *may* degree them, but I don't trust adjustable cam gears which is why I don't have any now. I literally can't afford to have one slip and eat valves

This. Or get the UR gears. I have had mine off and on plus many changes so many times with zero issues....KNOCK ON WOOD!

Thought Matt M still had a couple sets. Have you tried emailing/calling him to check?

I won't pin them because there is no telling what I will do in the future and if I pin them I will never sell them. I'll either figure out which gears to get (UR seems to be the way to go) or I will just not degree the cams. There is no on between in my mind.

hmm some street cams would be nice for me. shift the powerband a little to the right...

You could do that with cam gears on stock cams also.

what, running reverse versus the normal settings?

You could play around with it. Who knows what increasing or decreasing overlap will do on a 3.5 td04 car!:) Retarding both intake and exhaust "should" push it right. At least that's what I read on the interwebs but haven't tried personally.
