View Full Version : Another stupid injector question

FluffyCow

The ECU will automatically correctly use the right amount of fuel provided I input the size and latencies correctly, right? I'm thinking I might have issues with my stock injectors and I have a set of 550ccs waiting to go in

Whatever is causing your issue won't be cured by swapping in a larger set of injectors.

If you believe your stockers are bad, send them out to be flow tested or at least swap in a set of known good stock injectors.

FluffyCow

Only reason I thought of my 550s is I have them. I don't have another set of stockers or time to send em out for cleaning/flow testing. I think I'm gonna re gap my plugs when I get home and see if that's the issue.

Proper diagnostics? Ain't nobody got time for dat!

Problems are never what you want them to be. Chances are you will have to invest some time and $$ into figuring out the issue.

FluffyCow

What should I do for proper diagnostics then? I've done a boost leak test and fixed the ones I found. Usually backfiring at WOT is boost leaks. I have none. Next thing would be spark, correct? Hence why I want to check/regap my plugs. Too bad it's raining cats and dogs.

At what point was the car perfect and what did you change on the car to create this issue?

FluffyCow
08-01-2013, 02:59 PM
Car had SAFCii and avc-r in it. Removed in favor or chrome. Car hasn't really run right since I bought it and the turbos failed. So I guess it HAS to be a boost/vac leak someplace.

How did you "unwire" the SAFC?

Are you running a Brett or Jester ECU?

FluffyCow
08-01-2013, 03:14 PM
Jesters. SAFC was tapped, with one wire with butt splices for easy reversion. Car did this before SAFC was removed, too

Ah okay so it hasn't run right since the turbo swap and we got zero boost leaks.

Stock inner coolers and pipes? Stock turbos?

What BOV? Recirc or vented?

FluffyCow
08-01-2013, 03:38 PM
FMIC with modified stock piping. 15gs. HKS SSQV... I think v2(no screw yellow hks label). I did notice a decent amount of pressure coming out of the rear valve cover where you remove the maf bubble hose and plug it to not pressurize the crankcase... Compression test time?

Nah, you probably need a new PCV.

In my experience, these are the most common causes of stumbling:

Weak plugs
Aftermarket plug wires
Weak coils
Old/clogged fuel filter
Cracked front manifold
Compressor surge caused from FMIC setup

FluffyCow

Pcv was replaced before I rebuilt turbs cuz I, nievely, thought my oil burning was pcv. And yes, I used OEM.

I do have aftermarket wires. Fuel filter is new. And I think i might have a cracked front mani. I really don't want to fight with changing it though. Shit.

Granted I think it had the cracked front mani when I first bought it and it didn't stumble on the way home

Well it seems if you want a car that runs right, you gotta do something that you really don't want to do.

FluffyCow
08-02-2013, 09:06 AM
I know. Just contemplating doing it when I do 120k, I'll just buy a hoist and pull the whole damn thing. Lol

Also I'm not positive I have a cracked mani. I know it's common, but I'm not sure. There is what looks like it could be a crack, but again I'm not sure. Only way to tell is to pull it?

They typically crack where the center port joins the collector on the underside right where you can't see it...

FluffyCow
08-02-2013, 09:53 AM
I have what looks like it's either a crack or casting mark to the right of the center runner, on top.

Btw, thanks for the almost-instant help. You're awesome. ;)

That weld is typically where it fails. They just made the metal too thin there. :(

Chances are, that's your problem. :)

FluffyCow

I'll check with my inspection mirror today. Still gonna gap down though.... I think my coils are weak(originals with like 130k on em

Do you know how to test them? It's very easy. I think Jeff on Stealth316 did a write up. It's also in the manual.

FluffyCow
08-02-2013, 11:11 AM
Yeah I gotta ohm them out. Just been lazy, lol. Still pretty sure .036 is too big of a gap for 14 psi.

Yeah I'd say the same thing.

FluffyCow
08-02-2013, 12:35 PM
Gonna gap em down to .028 and try it today. Really hoping it's gap. Can live with a leaky mani if it works fine. I need enough power to beat a 305fwhp turbo'd cobalt ss... Lol

For what it's worth Fluffy, turning factory boost up to 14psi made me gap down to .33ish to get rid of a small stumble around 3k.

FluffyCow
08-02-2013, 01:38 PM
Still gonna gap low, can't hurt anything but gas mileage...

Gapped plugs down to 028. Nothin'. Gonna try some 2 dollar exhaust seal shit that's like jbweld. If it doesn't work I get to pull the manifold and cry about it. Lol

Even if the JBweld works, which it may not, it won't handle it long term.

Greg E
08-04-2013, 12:41 AM
Just pull the manifold and save that steal stick shit for your rusty bathroom drain pipe.

FluffyCow
08-04-2013, 09:42 AM
Right, but 30 seconds of schmear and wait 2 hours to drive the car, is easier till I have someplace other than the road in front of my house to work on my car than trying to pull the manifold. Won't I need to pull the engine to easily soak/get at all the mani bolts?

Never enough time to do it right, but always enough time to do it again.

FluffyCow
08-04-2013, 02:28 PM
The issue is the working in the road in front of my house. That coupled with lazy, but I mainly having to work in the road. Guess I'll have to look up the procedure to pull it. I think, at minimum, I need to pull radiator, front turbo, dp to be able to get at the manifold. Even then I don't know if I can get my impact gun in there.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

sergechronos
08-04-2013, 03:24 PM
That's at a minimum, don't need the impact gun to get them off though. Breaker bar generally works fine with copious amounts of PB Blaster or similar.

FluffyCow
08-04-2013, 03:32 PM
Don't have a breaker bar. Do have a pneumatic impact that is amazing. What else needs to come off to get at the manifold?

I can go check this afternoon, have my front turbo and radiator off right now anyhow so if anything else is in the way I'll see. Not sure if you'll have enough room for the impact or not.

FluffyCow
08-04-2013, 04:03 PM
I think i need to remove the alternator to get at the far right bolt.

Alt , AC, AC bracket, front motor mount, trans stay, turbo and everything hooked to it. Get a breaker bar and good 19mm socket if your DP has not been off before. May need a torch too. PB blaster never worked for me.

FluffyCow
08-05-2013, 08:22 AM
I can get my impact on the dp nuts. Just need to convince the father in law to let me use his driveway.. Took 6 months to get my car out last time.

That said, I wonder if I can pull it all without pulling the rad?

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 4

sergechronos

Highly doubt it. I had to pull the rad just to get the front turbo off.

FluffyCow
08-05-2013, 09:22 AM
As did I but I've heard of it being done(front turb) without pulling the rad

I have never pulled the radiator to remove the front turbo (or alternator for that matter). I didnt even have to pull the radiator fans or hoses for the turbo (but the drivers side fan did have to come out for the alternator).

FluffyCow
08-05-2013, 10:35 AM
Alt was for front mani, which is what I really need to pull

I would pull the rad. It's easy and provides so much room to work.

Well, I checked my ghetto fix. Doesn't appear to be leaking now, or at least not very badly. Boost leak checked AGAIN. Nothing. Sprayed water on everything, no bogging like a vac leak. Idle smells horribly rich... Forget it if I rev the engine at all. Waiting on a WBO2 sensor that I bought to confirm. Wonder if my hot wired Walbro is badly over running my fpr to the point I need to tune it out. I'm lost at this point.

Oh yeah. Ohmed primary coils. 13.6k, 13.9k, 13.5k. Way way out of spec on middle coil. Guess I'll need a new coil pack.

Plugs are black with carbon... Ground strip whitish brownish.

Worth it to buy the recirc kit for my hks or get a different bov like evo bov?

Checked my boost gauge today while driving. Looks like I'm boosting more like 17,though I don't think the gauge is accurate. I certainly can't run that on stock injectors. Maybe I'm getting pulled timing/fuel cut?

Here's a portion of log. I don't know how to post it other than a copy/paste. Can someone explain what exactly my car is doing here, other than the obvious it's running like shit that I already know? Thanks
