just wondering which one of these cars takes it assuming HP is equal. lets say we have a 550 hp 3000gt vr4 go up against the stock 550hp GTR who wins in the 0 to 60 and in the 1/4 mile?
I always thought this would be an awesome match considering both of these cars have all wheel drive and both weigh the same coming in around 3800lbs.

GTR because of superior transmission. Now I want to see roll racing.

the gtr has a lower cd as well, maybe a stroked 6g74 pop canned vr4(sub 3000lb) would beat a gtr

If you are talking a stock gtr, it doesn't take much to beat one in the 1/4. Add power, and lose weight.

The gtr would will if the drivers are equal as well. The gtr shifts a hell of a lot faster.

The GTR will be faster than 3000gt with similar power, but not that bad that vr4 needs that much modification. Did you forget STM ran 10s on a bpu 380hp stealth? I actually think the difference will be very small depend on how good the 3/s driver is. If he's a great driver it'll be same like Ray than ran 11.1 with 15gs. The problem with 3/S owners is they are scared to launch the car. What is the point of having a AWD then? Drive on the snow days?

You guys are forgetting its not very hard to make a 3s 500 lbs lighter than a gtr. I've driven a lightened td04 vr4 on e85 that would crap all over just about any stock car on the streets. Now a gtr with bolt ons, and a tune is a whole different animal.
I Think the GTR's most obvious advantages are more displacement, better transmission and paddleshifters
550hp 3.8L TT = more responsive than a 550hp 3.0L TT
If you lighten the 3000gt to 1500kg it might stand a chance. Or add equivalent displacement. Not sure.

i didnt forget about the stm stealth thats my main point is a sub 3000lb car+equal displacement

STM car could go way faster with that weight and 550hp. it was quicker than gt-r with 380hp and shitty top end because of the turbos.

bench racing. lol.
and the R35 would win. rowing gears is the most nostalgic means to losing.

You must have never seen a 2 liter run 6's.

well that's true but they are also 800+hp and weigh less than 900 kg right.
more displacement means less turbo lag that's just a fact.

GTR doesn't even care if it has lag because of transmission.

seems like over all most people think the gtr takes this even with the 3s being boosted to equel hp do to it's better trany, but lets not forget that vr4's have done 10 second runs with under 500hp and also don't forget that as good as the gtr's trany is, it's not the fastest shifting in the world, it still take around 200milliseconds to shift so this does leave some possibility for a really good driver to shift faster, unlike some of the more expensive cars with paddle shifters that can do shifts in under 50 millseconds which is impossible for any human to match.

I was at Bandimere yesterday and watched a stock GTR run solid 12.5-13.5 and 1.8 60's. I roped it by over 1 second. On roadcourse I was down by 4 seconds before I swapped in the new suspension, BBK, and road race slicks. They run pretty solid 2:02 at HPR Roadcourse. I'll be head to head on Sunday with 3, a few GT3's, and several Vettes. I hope to make things interesting with a 20 yr old car that cost 1/2 as much. All trash talk aside I would trade in my car for a GTR if my wife would let me ignite another 50g's on top of the trade.

that's very impressive but sounds like you might have been racing the somewhat older GTR like 2008 /2009 model the new ones are doing 10.8 1/4 miles.
I am also very interested to know how both of these cars would handle in a road course with sharp turns, if we upgraded our suspensions in our 3000gt's.
somehow I think the GTR would still take it with all of stability control and yall sensors but I don't know.
Post in here and let me know how you do Saturday!

The active diffs, yaw, brakes, tuning, auto trans... all is superior. They don't run times like that where I live. Add about a second. On road course with slicks and the suspension tuned... they're a racecar in a box... fast everywhere on the track.
yeah, high 10's seems to be where they can run fairly consistent. and that's not even talking about a gutted R35. i'd imagine a gutted one would be able to run circles around all but the most heavily modified 3/s's.
don't get me wrong, i like the 3/s. it's also 20 years older as a platform. do you wanna bench race a c3 vette against a c5?

yea thanks for your answers guys. in the end I kind of figured the GTR would take it too, but I always hold on to the nostalgia of the 3s. I guess you could say the GTR is the 3000gt's true successor. pound for pound, power for power the 3000gt is outmatched. I suppose in the end japan would eventually have come up with something to top our beloved gt's and that something was the GTR. I still say our cars look cooler though ^_^
the 3/s has no true successor. the r35 is the successor to the r30-34's. hell, the next closest thing to a 3/s is probably an audi...and that's sad.

yea I know it doesn't have a TRUE TRUE successor, but in the sense that the gtr is 6cylinder twin turbo engine with all wheel drive and it comes out of japan I just figured it's closest you'll get. it's to bad Mitsubishi wont get back in the game and make a modern version of the 3000gt though. one with similar horse power and computerized goodies like the GTR.

The whole question is stupid because tuned to the same HP, the extra displacement will give the GTR more area under the curve. The only way to make the question "fair" would be to attach a dollar limit to each car and see who wins in a straight line... ;)

Yeah I just watched a GTR run 10's last night. I've watched one or two cars here (and 3si) over the past decade do that. I'm thinking 9/10 times, it's gonna be the GTR.

People around here would have faster cars if they could push a few ideas out of their heads. Like, fear of lag, fear of high boost, and wanting a 4,000lb "street car". For sure, slap on some big turbos, crank up the boost, and start throwing weight out of the car. Just look how many dsm's are in the 10's, with a 2 liter that started out life at 195 hp.

Fixed that for you. And also, yes, because the internet solely exists to discuss cars and bench race.

Honestly, glad Mitsu isn't getting into the game. Fact is, cars are just another business for Mitsubishi and as such anything "high performance" would be gutted in short order. Look at what it takes for them to keep producing the Evo, there's just not room for 2 high performance cars in their portfolio (in their eyes) and certainly not likely to attract the kind of consumers it would take to have a car that competes with the GTR. Factor in what happened to the Eclipse (their budget performance car with the GSX) since 99, and I'd be scared to see what they thought a modern 3/S should do and cost. Besides, look at how people bitch now about cost of maintenance and parts for these things, I wager that something that competes with a 100k+ Skyline would be even more expensive to maintain. And, even if it was dirt cheap for the maintenance and parts, people would still bitch about it. Comes with the territory.
I *would* however like to see what Mitsubishi could come up with engineering wise to match the GTR and what it would cost to produce (could be cheaper since MHI produces so much stuff), but I just don't know that I would want to see them make a production version given what they would likely cut to pad profits. Especially after the hurting that was put on the company from their 0/0/0 financing plan a few years back.

I agree that there is more performance to be had by pushing some stigmas out of the community, but I know personally some I'm not willing to give up. Just don't know, for instance, that I would be able to commit to a TD05 set up with anything less than a 3.5L or bigger for a street car. Course with the head lift fix issues, not sure there's any reason to be scared of high boost now. I've seen enough wild DSMs over the years though to know that if you're willing to push the envelope you can get some amazing results from it. That said, kind of defeats the point of a 3000GT if you take the GT out of it by stripping weight and features. I think people need to choose their battles. I'm okay with a car that weighs 4000 pounds and lacks ultimate power in favor of a quick spooling 400-450awhp TD04 because that's how I use it. For me, I make 2k drives every 4-5 weeks. I want the creature comforts and to have *some* power. Not out there to burn down drag strips and roast Ferraris. If I'm wanting a monster performance car, I'd rather buy a DSM and strip it and go crazy with it on the cheap. Never made sense to me when people want both worlds and get upset that they can't have either without a commitment.
