View Full Version : Road Course Is it worth it to have race tires heat cycled from the MFR?

I'm looking at purchasing some Road Race Comps and noticed Tire Rack has an additional upgrade box to have new tires heat cycled and stretched prior to shipment. Is this a worthwhile service? According to their racing tire break in procedures they recc bringing the tires up to warm up temp and then allowing them to cool for 24 hours before using. According to their tire tech information it's quite wasteful to not properly break them in. Any thoughts? Anyone let it rip without breakin in your tires like tire rack specifys? To an extent I'm slightly worried about breaking them in on a machine for roundness as I know my rims aren't exactly perfectly round and typically when you break in tires their profile changes to match the rim and they contour round. I've never heard of tires "setting" to the rim. All my tires been mounted multiple times on multiple rims with no felt difference. Heat cycling/scrubbing the tires makes them a bit more consistent, while running "stickers" seems to have a grease-peak-fall off phasing.

Takes about 100 miles to "round set" my heat cycled tires to a new rim.

The MFR recc on race comps is drive on them for 20 mins at the track at 170-190 degrees and let them sit for a minimum of 24 hours. Do you follow their reccomendation, Chris?

The way I was taught was to go on track, and start off at half speed and slowly build up to max speed over like 5-10 laps, then remove and let set (no weight on it) for 24+ hours. All my current tires are already scrubbed as they are take-offs from other teams. I was also told you don't heat cycle or scrub rain tires, I guess they wear out fast enough to not bother. Since I don't have too many spare wheels, I would buy them already cycled from tirerack if I were to buy stickers.
