Hi guys,

A few people keep asking for various pics of my car due to pics i upload on FB, so i decided its best and easier to share the last years work with you all on the main forum.

I am copying a build thread over so naturally dates are wrong as i bought the car in January 2012 and completed it in April 2012. ALL the work apart from the respray was done by myself, in the middle of winter, and on the driveway.

Here are the first batch of pics and info.....Ps, after the resto pics i will copy over the TT conversion thread :coo3l:

Well, seeing as i love seeing what goes on this side of the pond i presume you would be interested in what happens our end :bigthumb:

The car in question is a 1997 MK3 GTO which i bought last year end of January (damn ! its been a year already  ). When discussing the car with the seller he informed me the car was a grade 4.5 import which is pretty much as good as you will get for a used car. He continually told me how mint the car was and there was nothing out there like it.

The car had been standing for almost 9 years due to import registration issues and as such wanted £4000. This was a ludicrous amount for a running car never mind a non runner due too standing for 9 years !!!! Naturally no one was remotely interested and soon enough he got bored, He stuck a post saying a trader had offered him £1200 and the first offer around that would secure the car.

A quick 100 miles later and i arrived at the sellers house....To say i was ready to commit murder was an understatement :cussing:. The car had been abandoned on his drive on the lawn and had literally sunk into the mud so the floor pan was resting on the floor. His house was also a building site and the car was battered and bruised all round, as well as the bushes had over grown the car and rubbed all over the paint work in the wind. I was ready to walk away but my mate spoke me round saying it would break for that given some of the parts on it so i simply couldnt lose.

We were going to tow the car all the way home but i had taken a few spares with me that we thought could have failed from standing. The car was towed a 100 yards down the road where we jacked it up and swapped out the complete fuel pump carrier on the road side. The car barked too life and drove all the way home without fault after standing for 9 Years, the brakes were not even remotely binding or anything !!!

Here is my story of 2 months solid hard work. I did all of this on my driveway in winter with nothing but a basic tool kit and some help from a couple of mates. We did one big day stripping down and another big day rebuilding it, the rest was all just an hour or two after work each day desperately trying to get it ready for my wedding....I made it with about a week to spare !

To set the mood...here is the two photo's posted in the for sale advert (what he didnt mention is these were taken 9 years ago when it arrived in the UK !!!!!!!)

1st FEB 2012

I bought a 1997 MK3 NA manual which was imported to the UK in 2003 having covered a genuine 63 000Km . VOSA would not register the car until it was 10 years old so it was put into storage until 18 months ago. The sellers house was undergoing severe renovation so the poor car was moved to the muddy driveway during the building works. It suffered several bumps and bruises all round, however it was mechanically sound as a pound !!

I have also found out the car in reality has had a grand total of 4 years 5 months use MAX  . It was built Sept 1997 but first registered 19th April 1999 to Mr Sinji Takaoka of Hiroshima, it then landed in the UK 24/07/2003. Also who knows how long it took to be auctioned, shipped, and land this side before it was auctioned again etc.

The car as i bought her...Which is a 100X more crappy than the pics show

The paintwork is flat and dull, there is a few scuffs and the side skirt is smashed. However there is not a single parking ding or not even a stone chip on the side skirts ro front bumper. This was definitely some poor Japs utter pride and joy. The photos make the body work look BETTER than it is  , however a trip to the painters is in order ;)

These are engine shots after a blast off with water..just to get all the old crap off. As you can see all the factory paint marks are still on all the bolts and hoses, even the clamps are still rust free . The bonnet catch and throttle body parts are as they came from the factory 8-)

super advan's. nice!

Nice indeed....just not on my car :D I sold them to friend for a massive 300 bucks ! lol

16th Feb 2012

ok so enough jibber jabber and time for some more progress.... This is the ONLY part that wasnt done on my driveway. I managed to borrow a friends ramp to tackle the underbody

Today I spent 2 hours on the underside of the car as i didn't want any over spray on the new paintwork once done in the next couple of weeks.

First up is the usual 'before' pics..

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5851/sam1318z.jpg
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/9685/sam1320h.jpg

So i wire brushed any 'rust' off..actually most of it was brown stains opposed to bubbles of rust, then i attacked it with Tetra Shutz underseal. I made sure i removed the brake and fuel line cover so the pipes could get a damn good covering while they were still so clean.

Once i had smothered the entire chassis in underseal I then painted the diff, prop, subframes and drive shafts in satin black just to tidy things up underneath. There is not a single drop of oil on the engine , gearbox or transfer box and even the front brake backing plates are so clean you can still read the part number off them

Ignore the crappy bodged exhaust..that was temp untill the replacement arrived

Window Weather strips
Windscreen rubber (removing screen for paint work

Nah, i hated them so offered them to him for next too nothing, mine were the proper 3 peice split rims too

I have also been known to sell a set of genuine 18" BBS LM's for $300 too... I think i need to see a doctor :w00t:

bbs's have a lot of look-alikes, but the super advan's are a unique design--at least i've never seen any like it. selling the entire set for half the cost of 1 new rim...that's just stupid. how are you going to afford future mods?

To be fair over here they wouldnt have been worth much more than another 100 bucks so wasn't that bad.

how are you going to afford future mods?

Same way i have afforded to run 3-4 TT's at a time for the last 7 years...Working hard and perseverance :coo3l:

There were still a good few bits too come off when the car arrived at the painters. Basically i drove it there so door handles, repeaters, mirrors, spoiler etc etc were all removed on site when i dropped it off for painting.

The spray job was done through a mates body shop and was a very limited budget respray, That's the reason i did all the stripping and building.

20th Feb 2012

Final update before the painters get busy, I gave the body a good jet wash off and decided to give the front and rear a mini make over while i had the chance.

The rear end came up a treat after the jet wash and was pretty much rust free,

http://img826.imageshack.us/img826/8882/dscf0074xa.jpg

So next up was a quick rattle can with some Satin Black..

21st Feb 2012

So now all i can do is tackle the mountain of bits i have in the garage that were taken off the car so it could go for painting. Im left with loads of trims, scuttle panel, wiper arms etc etc. Tonights task was the top and bottom trims for the rear screen and the sail panels.

I started off with some Autoglym Paint Renovator and then finished off with the Autoglym Super Resin Polish. The photos again dont really show the massive improvement but the certainly came out like new again. In the pics the rubber section of the sail panels still look faded grey..they are not, they are now a nice dark grey that will match my new window weather strips 8-)

22nd Feb 2012

So as i was afternoon off anyways i thought I'd tackle a few more bits on the car , so i have now

Removed front seat
Removed interior carpet
Removed head lining
Replaced spark plugs
Replaced HT leads
Removed front & rear rocker covers
Removed Plenum
Fitted my 18's back on
Painted inside rear wheel arches

I know i keep banging on about how clean and fresh this car is, but every time i take something off i see more and more how unabused and clean this thing is !!

While painting the rear arches i spotted the fuel filler pipe , the nuts and clamps are all still fresh zinc coated without a hint of corrosion. Even the fuel pipe still has the part number clearly visible on it

http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/6919/sam1397z.jpg

The car is now on 18's for a bit of ground clearance  I also attacked it with a white tyre pen pointing out absolutely any minor blemish i found so that it comes back 100% when done

http://img848.imageshack.us/img848/9427/sam1399c.jpg

http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/8655/sam1409u.jpg

I was actually going to fit my 3rd gen lifters in it today..however after popping a couple of rockers out I discovered this one already came with 3rd gen's from the factory 8-) 8-)

So i have been doing loads of silly odds and ends not worth really documenting but in brief its remove, clean up and paint a few engine bay brackets and clamps, as well as the engine mounts and battery tray.

Car should have been at the painters weeks ago..but delays mean the car is STILL stuck on my drive looking sorry for itself :wallbang:

So out of sheer frustration i felt i needed to do SOMETHING on the car...even if it was as trivial as fitting the front rocker cover :D

Here are a few most recent engine bay shots taken tonight, obvioulsy some things are not fastened down yet or fitted correctly etc.

Absolutely NOTHING was replaced in the engine bay, only the plug leads and air filter were replaced in favour for OEM units. Everything else was removed, stripped and cleaned or painted and then refitted.

EVERYTHING was done at home with nothing more than basic cleaning products and many many rattle cans Lol, not a single part was out sourced to any companies apart from the rocker and plenum a friend rattle can'd for me in crinkle red & black.

Looking good!! Now imagine if you had a powder-coating system & an at-home electroplating kit at your disposal...

On second thought, don't 'cause then you feel obligated to pull apart things you didn't need to just to redo them! :D

Keep up the good work! The valve covers & plenum look great! I was going to ask which powder color was used on the V/Cs, but read that they're painted...they turned out awesome!

Hi, at this stage of the build it was still NA. I did later run a TT plenum after back to back dyno testing saw a 14 bhp increase in power. The car is now running 9b's on the 10:1 engine with 20% Methanol :) :) I will tag the TT conversion on the end of this build thread.

Sent from the garage

I LOVE powder coating and my father used to own and industrial company doing it. Just about everything I owned ended up powder coated lol.

I r removed and painted anything that was removable so it's all super neat. The car was completed 14 months ago and still looks as good as these photos :)

The paints used were high heat crinkle paint which come in a red which is near enough identical to the red Hondas use on their valve covers :)

While doing my car i bought the wife another TT, Actually i bought her two but sold the other soon after :w00t:. So the car itself was mechanically sound but boy did it need some good lovin' !! Just a few quick pics of what i did over about 3 weekends or so.

Here are a couple of pics of the wifes car..was pretty much as scabby as mine first was when i bought it..similar make over (minus a respray !) and all is well.

Walbro 255 fuel pump
HKS SMIC's
HKS Hard Pipe kit
SARD FPR
Greddy boost controller set at 14psi
Custom exhaust and small K&N airfilter.

Apart from that its all stock fueling/managment and runs a nice healthy 358bhp which is plenty for a daily driver runing the kids to school :D

Thanks !!! This whole build cost me a total of $3500 of which $1500 was for the respray alone. I also bought replacement wheels and new pads & rotors all round in that price. Everything was just hard work and rattle cans, This was no big budget build at all. :bigthumb:

WOOOOHOOOOOO, car is finally at the painters, it should have gone there a month ago but the painter fell very ill and had stay in hospital the put him out of action for a while...let the fun commence

So i spoke to the painters today about colour/shade etc that i wanted the car too be so we mixed up and tried a good few combinations..DAMN who thought mixing paint was so complicated :?

The factory colour is X08 Pyranees black, this consists of a base black, a white pearl, a green tint , a blue tint and a grey tint. I wanted to enhance the blue and leave out the green so we tried leaving the green tint out totally, strangely enough it made zero difference to the colour and it still had a green tinge to the colour in the sun :?

After mixing a few options and factory colours we stripped it right back and literally added mix of SBX7 Maxicar Galaxy Blue tint to really deep BO92 Black. The results were EXACTLY what i had in mind and the formula was born :D

I tried taking loads of photos of the sample to give an idea but the camera just couldn't pick it up nicely at all.

In the shade the colour is a very very deep black

Car is FINALLY all prepped and ready for the spray booth a full 2 months later than planned, but better late than never :naughty::naughty:

Car has had every little mark, ding, chip repaired and taken back to bare metal in many places. They have prepped the body and it is going in the spray booth on Saturday to be primed and it will then sit for a couple of days before getting ready to hit it with the colour. We still have the wheels to do which is why they are in the car, they will be painted the same colour again but doing the insides too.

Didn't have a camera on me as i wasn't expecting progress when i popped in today so excuse the crappy phone pics

PROGRESSSSSSSSS :D:D

All the loose bits are in the booth painted, lacquered and baked. I will be collection them in the morning

We mixed up 2ltrs of paint today and added 2% SBX7 (blue pearl), when we checked it outside it didn't seem to have the blue popping out enough so we increased it to 3.5%. We took the sample outside and for the first time the whole day the sun broke through for literally about 45 seconds...we dashed into the sun with the sample and was like..WHOA !!! I have a good feeling about the colour 8-)

So painted today was..

2x A pillar trims
2X lower door mouldings
2x sail panels
2x mirrors
2x hoop spoiler extensions
2x side skirts
2x rear quarter trims
2x door handles
1x hoop spoiler
2x spoiler cover trims

The actual car is due to go in the booth later this week , Thursday onwards and will be done for Monday or so. After that i have to rebuild the car with the help of Staff's and GT-P. Once the car is complete it has to go back for flatting and mopping as they can't do all the little bits and bobs without flinging them across the workshop

I am feeling light at the end of the tunnel now ! Never ever would i have expected all this to take 3 months (yes I've had it that long already  ) And now i stand a chance of it being ready for my wedding in 4 weeks time ..Phew 8-)

and on to the next stage....This was to assemble all the paintwork back onto the car so i could start building it properly.

I had booked to do the car yesterday but the pouring rain almost stopped play, We managed to drive the car to my work where we got it in the cramped workshop out of the rain. Progress was VERY slow as working on a freshly painted car was scary stuff indeed

Also re-assembling things so all the rubbers and mouldings lined up perfectly was a tough job. The car needed to look like its never been apart and i think we achieved that going by how everything lined up when done.

Below are a few snaps of the almost finished car, there are still a few trims not fitted as well as its still on scabby winter wheels & tyres.

The bonnet had been mopped already but not the bumper as it was not fitted when i got the car back form bodyshop (hence the colour difference)

AT this stage it was just most of the body panels refitted, All the proper finishing touches will take place now including refitting all the interior.

The car will now go back to the bodyshop to be flatted back and mopped, they wanted the car complete and built as there were too many loose pieces to try do individually. So final product in a week or two :smthumbup:smthumbup

Small update today....

When I collected the car from the bodyshop there was an issue with car misfiring and dropping cylinders. Turns out the fuel pump was on its way out from all the rust in the tank . Standing for 9 years solid didn't help :(

Managed to replace the dying fuel pump so it actually drives as well as it looks now !

I also started sorting the 'corners' one at a time so today i did the passenger rear corner, this included..

Servicing caliper
deglazing pads
spraying inner wheel arch Satin Black
adjusting hand brake shoes
fitting inner arch liner
fitting replacement 19"wheel and tyre
polished exhaust tips

I did the same to the Drivers rear too so only have the fronts too go. Im waiting on a few clips and trims so i can put the window weather strips on and the rear screen trim too. All i need for the interior is the plastic boot trims (mine were all broken for some reason ).

Hopefully its booked in for Saturday to be flatted back and mopped..after that its feet up time and enjoy !!

Some sneaky pics...

The cars covered in dust sheets to stop any over spray from painting the wheel arches.

The discs are new ebay jobbies that are dimpled and grooved. I had them very lightly shot blasted and then hot zinc dipped. This stops any corrosion what so ever, and even now a full year later they still look like they do in the pics below (plus the car sits out in the open on my drive so is open to the elements 24/7!)

http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/7999/sam1920.jpg

http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/44/sam1921a.jpg

Last thing i will have too do is raise the suspension...I measured today and i have 2" ground clearance on the centre exhaust and 3.5" on the actual floor pan :eek:. It makes speed bumps impossible and the car grounds out even on slight ruts in the road :wallbang::wallbang:

Sadly though all didn't go quite so smoothly...

The car was meant too be ready for my wedding last year on the 27th May. The delays from the painter going into hospital meant I got the car assembled on the 7th may but still needed to go back for flatting and polishing as well as the window weather strips I ordered 14 weeks earlier had STILL not arrived (despite the vendor telling me they were on the shelf when I paid !!)

Here is the next instalment lol

7th May 2012

So just when I thought it was all finished the trouble began..... The car had stood for 9 years when I bought it and the tank was fairly rusty inside. I had drained all the fuel and flushed & cleaned the tank as much as possible. I also replaced fuel filter and had the injectors cleaned and matched. I thought I had it all out but obviously not.

On the way home from the body shop the car started stammering and eventually dropped a cylinder, and probably another if not two more :shake:. I knew it was fuel related as I had perfect spark on all 6 cylinders. I dropped the tank and it was full of fine fine grit, I guess driving the car with fuel sloshing about has loosened more rust from area's I couldn't get too

So my newly serviced injectors and new fuel filter are toast as well as needing another fuel pump and fuel tank...all too be found AND fitted within the next two weeks sometime after work . The car is being used for me and my Best Man at my wedding in 20 days time

As you can see the fuel rails, injectors and injector filters are full up with fine sand/grit...oh the joys ( these were serviced about 10 miles ago :()

So replacement injectors, fuel pump, fuel filter and fuel tank on the way ASAP.

This was cleaned, flushed out and hoovered of all rust about 50 mile ago..the loose stuff has been disturbed and washed off the tank walls from fuel sloshing around when driven. I had hoped it would have lasted till i had a bit more time on my hands but that was not to be

The colour is custom , basically it's jet black with 3.5% blue pearl mixed in. I just went to my mates paint shop and had them mix up various tints until I got close to what I had in mind.

15th May 2012 (two weeks before my wedding !!!)

Well its been a long road to get where it is today but its all done and finished 14 weeks later . Time to clock up some miles and enjoy :naughty::naughty:

The day started off with a rinse and then snow foamed, followed by two bucket wash and a micro fibre dry. After that the rubbers were masked up and the car then treated to some AutoGlym Ultra Deep Shine. Once that was buffed off the car was then waxed with AutoGlym HD wax followed by tyres and plastics shined.

The results were fantastic but the car is not very photogenic at all...you simply cannot get a decent shot of the pearl as it only comes out in 100% direct sunlight..which the reflection then buggers up the photo  . I took some with the flash on to try give an idea but the just look crap  , Speaking of reflection...the photo of the clouds was the reflection off the bonnet :smthumbup

For the best effect, go back to the first page and check the 'before' photos again and THEN look at today's :handsup:

Not bad for a 15 year old tart eh

I did do a WHOLE lot of stuff i didn't really document or photo but it included the entire interior being removed and every thing cleaned and refitted. I also dyed the roof lining black and tinted the lamps all round. The headlamps were stripped ,cleaned and robo modded with halo's fitted.

The car was finally completed a few days later when the window rubber trims arrived and the car was used for my wedding. It has been on the road for 8 months now as still looks as good as the day i finished it. The biggest thing was having the rotors hot zinc dipped as they look as new today as they did they day i fitted them. There is not a hint of corrosion at all even though the car lives outside in the weather without a cover.

Hope you enjoyed the pics :D:D
