Went to the local autocross event #2 for the year on Sunday and did very well. I was 6th fastest out of 160 cars....My best outing yet.

Pertinent mods are in my sig, stock turbos, untouched motor with 130k on it, original trans, most likely a stock clutch (havent had trans off since owning car). The car runs very well, paced Coopkill's car damn near dead even in a 3rd gear pull, he dyno'd 310 awhp.

I got to the track at about 11:45, the 2nd half of the morning session was only at about run #2 of four so I had plenty of time to watch. It also decided to rain JUST enough to coat the runway with a nice slick fresh coat of water without raining enough to wash it away, lol. Spin city ensued. About every 5th car went roundy round. It was cold and windy. A half hour with no more rainfall though it dried up lots and the cars were speeding up running 5-8 seconds faster than their second sessions. Morning session had ended pretty late around 12:50. I walked the track once with my dad and thought I had it figured out, WRONG.

Maybe an hour before my run group

Me in grid with my tire blankets (My fronts hit 150F by the end of the day, people without them were sitting at 70F tire temps all day long)

My first run. I screwed up the end soooo bad. I was supposed to stay center and go through the element in a clockwise direction, didnt quite happen... ran a 65.xxx

2nd run, front tires about 85F, rears at 70 (from 45 ambient) I got the course right and picked up 4 seconds.

3rd run, temps in the mid teens for fronts, mid 80's rear. This was my best run all day. Car ran wonderfully and I had the gears down correctly.

4th run. Nevermind the bag. I ninja'd it though... I thought it was stuffed in the back, should have thrown it out, yeah yeah I know. A decent run but I could not improve, shifted to much, came in to hot in a couple areas, screwed up.

Sorry about the camera angle, i really need to figure it out.... Will spend more time to get it right next time.

Also interesting to find out... whats with the rpm limited on our cars, I had thought that we only had fuel cut which is far from a limiter when it actually hits those conditions.
I banged off a limited in 1st gear a few times before the final 90 degree right hander to the final straight and once in 2nd gear. Just unusual I suppose, I had never hit the limiter before and didnt know it acted like "normal"

So yeah, I am mega impressed with the Dunlop Z2 tires, they are crazy grippy when hot, I cant imagine the BFG Rivals. I went with the Z2's since it rains here a LOT and the BFG's still arent out for another month or 2 in my size, got the Z2's in February.... BFG failed hard with that one. I saw probably 25-30 cars with the Z2's and not a single one on the Rivals.

My friend Joe's S2000, he is on 3 yr old Z1's and no tire warmers, he struggled all day as did most people.

How can you drive like that? :lo5l: It almost looks like you have your elbows locked the whole time.

And 3rd gear on an autox? Holy crap that must've been a fast course.

80 mph...that is insane! I still think your club setup is retarded, in one weekend we get anywhere between 15-20 runs!...you get...5?

I can't tell. are they summer tires or semi slick tires? how do they compare to yokohama A048 or nitto invo?

The Z2 is a high performance summer tire...basically 100% designed for autocross.

A048 is slow to warm, so not good for autocross, the Invo is not even in the same ball park.

160 cars x 60+ second runs = 2.5ish hours per run x 5 = 12.5 hour day

Invo is fail. A048's are overpriced junk.

We got 4. There is 30-40 cars in each run group plus dual drivers, 4 run groups, its near impossible to get more than 5 runs in a day with attendance like that.

Either way, Im jealous of 80 mph section, although that is a miata owners worst nightmare.

04-17-2013, 06:49 PM
All tbe s2000s and miatas were redlining 2nd for like 3 seconds. I was cringing. No clue why they didn't grab 3rd and get another 5 mph.

Thats a tough choice to make, all depends on the element afterward I guess on how important the speed is going to translate to time.

I always love your track posts. Love your car and driving skillz! Great job.

I love love love fast autox courses like that with our cars. I've gone to some that are tight for my car but works great for second gear in a civic/miata/etc... sucks. Banging 1st, shifting constantly, or bogging second. Found a new place at an airport that looks promising, though!
