So, since my transmission decided to go, (other thread located here (http://www.3sgto.org/3000gt-stealth-gto-related-topics/11729-more-screwed-than-i-thought-check-out.html)) I've been looking into my options for my situation, one being resourcing parts and fixing myself. So I've been reading as much useful info on the various forums as I can find. While searching, I've come across mutliple threads about the DSM AWD trans using a lot of the same internals as our Getrag's. So my question to that is, how accurate is this info? I'm asking this because I found the following information provided by some of the DSM trans guys:

Ok, stock specs are:

The Preload Setting is listed in SAE (inches):

Input Shaft --> 0.000" - 0.002" ENDPLAY
Intermediate Shaft --> 0.003" - 0.005" PRELOAD
Center Differential --> 0.003" - 0.005" PRELOAD
Output Shaft --> 0.003" - 0.005" PRELOAD
Front Differential --> 0.002" - .0067" ENDPLAY

These are what I normally use:

Stock/Street Transmissions with less than 400TQ at the crank:

Input Shaft --> 0.004" - 0.007" PRELOAD
Intermediate Shaft --> 0.005" - 0.007" PRELOAD
Center Differential --> 0.005" - 0.007" PRELOAD
Output Shaft --> 0.003" - 0.005" PRELOAD
Front Differential --> 0.002" - .0067" ENDPLAY

Street/Strip Transmissions with less than 600TQ at the crank:

Input Shaft --> 0.005" - 0.007" PRELOAD
Intermediate Shaft --> 0.007" - 0.009" PRELOAD
Center Differential --> 0.005" - 0.007" PRELOAD
Output Shaft --> 0.003" - 0.005" PRELOAD
Front Differential --> 0.002" - .0067" ENDPLAY

All out RACE Transmissions that are Rebuilt/Inspected regularly with more than 600TQ at the crank:

Input Shaft --> 0.007" PRELOAD
Intermediate Shaft --> 0.008" - 0.010" PRELOAD
Center Differential --> 0.005" - 0.007" PRELOAD
Output Shaft --> 0.004" - 0.006" PRELOAD
Front Differential --> 0.002" - .0067" ENDPLAY

For Extremely HIGH HP/TQ transmissions (As in ~900-1000+TQ at the crank):

Input Shaft --> 0.007" PRELOAD
Intermediate Shaft --> 0.010" - 0.012" PRELOAD
Center Differential --> 0.005" - 0.007" PRELOAD
Output Shaft --> 0.004" - 0.006" PRELOAD
Front Differential --> 0.002" - .0067" ENDPLAY

I'm mostly wondering on the shims, if those would work, since from what I've read, the shims are hard to find and expensive having to be bought in bulk per size.

I'm also looking for any technique and tool usage tips, so far the biggest piece of tool equipment I'm aware of is a 20 ton press (from what I've read, less is okay for trans, but 20 is needed for transfer case, so might as well just buy one press to do it all when needed)

The DSM trans and the FWD are similar. They are very different from the AWD trans. If their are shared parts its a few minor bearings.

Based on fact, or assumption?

if you want to use cheap DSM parts all day long, you need an atx.

Ugh, just had to like something IPD posted..Think I'm gonna be sick. :barfaway:

But in all seriousness, I'm with Thadd on this. Even if you MIGHT be able to use some of those parts, it could be a very expensive experiment to find out, not one I'd want to risk my trans on. And by the time you've bought everything to do it, probably would have been cheaper to have just had Jacks or similar do the rebuild.
